DIY Love Shines Sign and Valentine’s Day Mantel Scape

Show your heart for your family with this DIY Love Shines Sign.
I wanted to make something special for Valentine’s Day to show my family how much I love them. I bought a clearance-priced card holder with star shapes after Christmas, and decided to showcase pictures of my family, and their boyfriends/girlfriend with a Valentine’s Day Mantel Scape. It seemed logical that stars shine, and so do the people I love. The result was a shiny-themed mantel scape, with a little touch of love.

I found the sign in the wood craft section at Walmart. It is a little bit bigger than a turkey platter, and perfectly sized for the mantel. The materials needed to make the sign are as follows:
Materials Needed For DIY Love Shines Sign:
*wooden sign
*stand for sign
*spray gloss acrylic sealer
*black, red, and silver craft paint (I used Apple Barrel and Folk Art)
*paint brushes in several sizes ( I used a small angle brush and a liner brush)
*scissors
*mechanical pencil
*chalk
*Microsoft Word Program
Directions:
Open Microsoft Word, and choose the blank page. Click on layout, and change the orientation of the paper to horizontal. Then select Insert, shape, and choose the heart. Adjust the size to around 5″ at the widest part of the heart. Print.

Select Insert, shape, then choose heart.
Select another blank page, Click on layout, and change the orientation of the paper to horizontal. Go back to home, change the font to AR Hermann, and the size to 110. Type LOVE in all capital letters. Change the font to Broadway, and the size to 150. Type SHINES in all capital letters. Highlight each word, and center. These font sizes work great with a regular sized piece of copy paper. The 8 1/2 by 11 piece of copy paper also fits perfectly on the wooden sign. Print.

After selecting the font and size, type LOVE and SHINES in all capital letters.
Cut out the heart and center it on the sign. Make a mark at the top center of the sign with pen, to use as a guide.

Trace around the heart shape in pen, then paint it red with the angle brush. It will take several coats. I’m impatient, and used a hair dryer to dry each coat of paint faster.

Cover the back of the LOVE SHINES paper with chalk. Turn the paper over, and center the words on your sign, with the pen mark as your guide. Use the end of the mechanical pencil (make sure the lead is inside the pencil) to trace the letters. This method works better than you might think, and it is easy to do. After you trace the letters. the pattern will be on your sign.

Paint the word LOVE with black paint, and the word SHINES with silver paint. I used a liner brush for greater presicion.

The “star” of my mantel was the card holder with pictures of my children, their significant others, our pets, and me and my husband. I have come to love the selfies my husband takes of us everywhere we go. The one below is a picture he took at the bowling alley on New Year’s Eve.

I found some cupid plates at Goodwill, and two mercury silver quart jars.

I fell in love with a primitive style birdhouse that I also found at Goodwill. It had a Goebel bluebird inside (pictured), and was only $4.99.

The mantel scape was embellished with a bird nest wreath, pink curling ribbon, snowflake ribbon, sheer pink sparkle bows, glitter gold ornaments, and shiny pink ornaments.
