Technology change

Beyer-Garratt # 6029, arriving from Lithgow at Charbon bridge
Today I am participating in the City Daily Photo theme day “Change”.  I think one thing that sees constant change is technology.

There was lots of excitement at Kandos this weekend.  The Kandos Rylstone Rail Heritage Precint was officially opened with a visit by Beyer-Garratt #6029 from the NSW Rail Museum in Thirlmere. Beyer-Garratt #6029 is Australia's most powerful operating steam engine and it was wonderful to see.

This train did its first run in1954 and left active service in 1972.  Doesn’t seem long enough ago for something so old looking.  It was helped up over the mountains by two diesels at the rear one from the 1950s and the other from the 1970s.

  1. Its so good that people keep these old machines in working order so that we can learn about the past in an interesting way. It sure must have been an exciting day for everyone involved.

  2. It's always exciting to see old trains and the big powerful steam engines. I remember the sight, sound, and smell of the coal-burning locomotives from my early childhood in Chicago. Thanks for the nice photos and good coverage of the event, Joan.

    1. There was a weekly steam train at the small country town I lived in as a child. It stopped running at some point before the 1970s. I never saw them like you would have seen in Chicago.

  3. It looks like a beauty. Will there be other steam engines visiting and any train exhibits?

    1. I understand there is a plan to have a monthly service from Lithgow and weekend shuttle services between Kandos and Rylstone as a tourist venture. The train will however be pulled by a heritage diesel locomotive which is still being refurbished. This train was sent as a special treat as a stand in for the opening because the updated line is ready.

The initiative is part of the local museum which has lots of exhibits.

    1. This one sure was a monster. I has some sort of double boiler that makes it so big.
