This lovely quilt came about when I started sketching out the idea of a non-hand-pieced, large and scrappy Grandmother's Flower Garden. However, despite having a kindergartener in the house, I kept connecting octagons, not hexagons.
It resulted in this design, and I like it better than anything I might have gotten with hexagons! That star in the middle is way more interesting than just another hexagon. And it's probably easier to piece.
The piecing instructions are over on Confessions of a Fabric Addict, as a part of her Hands to Help series. You have until May 25th to enter a finished quilt for prizes (although of course you can donate after that date.)
The border is just perfection! I was planning a rainbow stripe (it's even in my original EQ drawing), but I couldn't find one in two shops! I was about to give up and buy a duller stripe when this hunk of gorgeous bolt caught my eye. Hexagons! Perfect for my hexagon quilt!
Oh, right, still octagons. Well, it's still rainbowy perfection - Ink and Arrow Ellery Honeycomb. The background is Shimmer Basics from Northcutt. And obviously everything else is scrappy! Several recent t-shirt quilt borders made it in, as well as some old, beloved fabrics.
The backing is minky from Joann's. I designed the size specifically for minky backing, because, well, minky. LOL
The quilting is loops. I thought about doing something block specific, but I couldn't figure out what to do. I am getting a lesson on longarm rulers next week from a lady in my guild. So maybe next time... Instead, I went with smaller and denser loops than my usual. So that's different?
52" square
I would be donating it to Happy Chemo or Little Lambs, both Hands to Help charities, but last week, Oklahoma caught on fire. A small town near us lost fifteen structures and one home, and northwest OK (where we lived two assignments ago) is burning in a "historic" condition. You can see in the above picture how dry my yard is - we desperately need rain to put these fires out. This quilt and the Superhero version (which sitll needs binding) will be donated to the local family who lost their home.
