Not a Lot Done

Yesterday was one of those days when I meant to get a bit done but then didn’t.  I have trouble with insomnia and for about 3 or 4 nights I haven’t gotten much sleep and yesterday was a bit of a lazy slow day for me.

I did get my backing fabric measured for Tic Tac Toe and decided the only way I was going to be able to use it was to piece it in some way and I thought why not a giant 9 patch for a backing.  I could get 5 pieces from the light gray stripe and 4 from the gray – if I need to put a sashing type of thing around the edges I can.  So I have the pieces cut out and didn’t get around to sewing them – but hope to this morning.

Wednesday night I got in some quilting on Tumalo Trails, but must admit I was playing word with friends with my sister and chatting more than I was quilting.  Even though I didn’t get a lot done I am linking to Confessions of a Fabric Addict because a little is still better than none right! also Busy Hands QuiltsCrazy Mom Quilts

I was taking a walk around the property last night and took a photo of one of my new plants – have any of your ever grown these – I had never seen them before I found the bulbs last fall – the flowers on the right – the tall one with the bell shape flowers – I looked them up and it says they are sometimes called “Mediterranean Bells”

Here is the plant – should be ready to open soon – I planted two clumps and they both have about 8-10 buds on them – they should be pretty.  Out of 22 bulbs it looks like a flower will have grown just about off of each of them.

More lily of the valleys – they are coming in thick now

I have insomnia, too, so I feel your pain. What happens to me is that I fall asleep for half an hour or so and then wake up. I’m wide awake then, so I get up and read. Sometimes I drink a glass of wine. I used to take Tylenol PM or some other sleep-inducer, but a glass of wine, water, and/or a little cheese work just as well. It just helps me relax and stop thinking about various things (sometimes ideas about quilts even pop into my brain, but mostly it’s family stuff or my to-do list). I also find plenty of exercise and fresh air can help. We tend to get house-bound here in winter. Good luck with yours!

glad you have found something that helps you, I get plenty of exercise here in the winter – my insomnia has more to do with my autoimmune diseases and fibro

I’m so sorry to hear about your sleep troubles, Karen. You get SO much more done than most people — I think you have all of our permission to slack off and play games on your phone every once in awhile! Yes, those new flowers do look familiar to me. I think I had them in a random bed full of a bunch of flowers that didn’t go together… that bed is gone now but I remember the flowers. They are pretty, and the stalks were strong enough to hold up the flowers without staking, if I recall correctly. Your Tomalo Trails is coming along nicely. I’m curious about the pieced backing for the other one, though — do the additional seams in a pieced backing ever cause you problems with hand quilting, like if you happen to have a bulky seam allowance on the quilt top that ends up right on top of the backing quilt and you’re struggling to pass your needle through all of those layers?

sometimes I use wide backs for quilts and other times I need to piece a back – I normally do not make something like this for a backing but this quilt will be machine quilted with curvy or straight lines so I am not worried about it. If I am hand quilting a quilt and it has a pieced back I might have to do a stab stitch or two through the area and not a running stitch. glad to hear you think you had luck with the flowers with the tall stems – they sure look pretty on the photo

So sorry you’re dealing with insomnia – that can be so frustrating. I had more trouble with that when I was still working – lots of middle of the night worries about students and things I had to get done. My solution was a glass of milk and Candy Crush, lol! It was such a boring game that it made me sleepy again after awhile! I love Words with Friends and enjoy chatting with the people I play with, too. Hope you have a restful day, Karen!

I have had insomnia since I was in my 30’s and nothing seems to help it – it kind of comes and goes but has to do with medical issues. Slept last night so that was good! working on Tic Tac Toe today

I’m so sorry to hear about your sleeping problem Karen, hope you start sleeping better. I would think with all you do you would sleep like a bear. I’m so exhausted when I go to bed I don’t wake up till morning. Yard work, a glass of wine before bed, quilting and my back pain pill knock me out till morning. I understand why you must be dragging after not sleeping good for a few days. Please take it easy and enjoy your family and friends. I love, love your lilies of the valley, they’re so pretty. I’ve never seen those bulbs before, they look like they will be pretty. I always love the unusual plants and bulbs.

I would try wine but it doesn’t agree with my sinuses – it blocks them the doctor says for people with sinus allergies wine is not good – something with the way it is made if you are allergic to certain things you are kind of allergic to wine! my sinuses get totally stopped up from it. I have always had trouble with sleep – my sleeping problems have to do with medical issues

I used to have terrible sleep problems (not being able to fall asleep or stay asleep). Now no problem. It was my gall bladder. I had that removed last November. Who knew it could be causing sleep issues? It was only functioning at 10%. I needed another health issue to deal with last year like I needed another seam to rip. You are making steady progress and deserve a slower day or two. Keep it fun and not a chore. Pulling weeds are a chore.

my problem is getting sleepy enough to fall asleep – 10 PM will come around and I am still wide awake and maybe 2AM finally I can fall asleep but wake up 4 hours later — I never knew a gall bladder could cause problems like that – weird!

    ¡¡Tus flores preciosas!!
    Buen fin de semana

    • Karen Apr 27, 2018 @ 18:32

      yes pretty flowers!

  • Colleen Apr 27, 2018 @ 21:30

So sorry you have had long term sleep issues. I am sure with your history you have done all the usual such as go to bed at the same time every night, using your bedroom for only sleeping and marital activities, getting up at the same time, no napping. I have sleep apnea so I used to wake up to use the bathroom several times a night . Now I put my Cpap machine to work (and feel so safe and comforted)and put my head down and I am asleep
    no waking all night long.

    • Karen Apr 27, 2018 @ 22:10

yes Colleen I have tried everything – I do not have sleep apnea though although my husband does. I try to go to bed the same time, no napping, blah, blah blah – nothing really seems to do it for me – you get used to it after awhile

Hi! The plant is an allium. Allium Bulgaricum – very unusual

    • Karen May 3, 2018 @ 7:15

I wasn’t asking name of that one but of some little white flowers that I had posted. The Allium’s common name is Mediterranean Bells – I tend to go by the common name as I can never pronounce the Latin name.
