Tumalo Trails

Yesterday was such a beautiful spring day that I didn’t get a lot done in the sewing room – I put the sashing around the Hertfordshire Quilt and then I wasn’t back in the sewing room until evening.  After I got done putting the sashing around the quilt I measured it and then checked the book and found out I had measured it wrong!  the sashing on this one is supposed to be the widest on the quilt – I will need to cut more and attach another width to it – same color – I refuse to take all of this off and start over again, plus I probably wouldn’t have enough of the color I am using to start over.  I will just cut two inch widths and sew it on – you might see the seam if you are looking but after it is quilted and washed/dried I don’t think it will be all that noticeable seeing as it is the same fabric.  I hope to get that on first thing this morning and squared up.  Just teaches us once again to read the directions more than once!

I was at the end so I rolled it down ready for quilting last night – it feels good to know I am half way done.  Isn’t it wonderful what you can make with scraps – this is basically a “free” quilt – just think of what you can make if you do not throw your scraps away or pass them on to another quilter – even if you just make nine patch blocks with your scraps and place color any which way you get a nice quilt from it.  Linking to Confessions o a Fabric AddictSew Fresh Quilts Jo’s Country JunctionMidweek Makers

I won’t get back to the Hertfordshire quilt now for a week or so – I really must pin baste the Tic Tac Toe quilt and machine quilt it – I’m supposed to have it in the mail by May 20th I believe so I can dilly dally around any longer  – I must get it done!

Scraps …lots of them in an array of colors… often make really interesting quilts.. and.. as you say… free…..just scraps. Your choices turned out lovely.

thanks – sometimes when I read someone saying they toss all of their scraps or hand them to another I am amazed to read that they do not realize what they could make or how much money they are actually throwing away

I made Tumalo Trail out of shirts for my son. He has made it very clear it will be going to college with him. I used pieces from shirts that belonged to his grandpa, his dad, his brothers, and uncles. However, a scrappy one would be fun and I save them all! And take the ones that others are getting rid of! 🙂

you are lucky to have the right kind of shirts to use, my husband doesn’t wear kind preferred the pullover shirts instead and our used clothing stores around here never seem to have them – I wonder if I put a request out on my blog I would get any 🙂

I agree, it’s not good to throw away scraps. I love scraps, and whenever I come across grab bags of scraps I buy them. I get so many different fabrics than if I just buy precuts or yardage. It sounds like a good idea to make another border rather than rip the border that’s on there already. It won’t even be noticeable, I would do it this way too. Tumalo Trails is so pretty in your picture, I just love it. We’re suppose to get some rain this afternoon, it’s dark here already.

I just finished it and I pressed the seam open so it lays nice and flat and you can barely see it – I was right once it is quilted and washed it won’t even be noticeable. We are to get rain starting soon- I was going to plant flower seeds now I will need to wait once again

Oh too bad you cut the sashing the wrong size, something like that can happen to anyone, it just needs a lapse in concentration. Do you really need to make the sashing wider? It looks fine to me, I’d just bind it in the same fabric. The top looks wonderful whatever you decide to do, I love your fabric and colour choices, perfect for the design.

this quilt is not done – there are many more rounds to go so this one has to measure right so the next round will fit – this measures 33 5/8 inch right now and will finish around 88 inches

I’m with you on the scraps – that is my favorite way to make and sew a quilt! Be careful how many people you tell that to, though – I keep having people handing me scraps they don’t want, and sometimes I don’t want their unwanted things either! I hope you have enough of the red fabric to make that border work – I’m sure it will never be noticeable in the finished quilt.

yes I have had some handed off to me to that actually got tossed as they were bad!

Congrats on being halfway on Tumalo Trail… and so glad you have figured a way to get that cool color of solid fabric to make it go around the quilt as needed for another round to bring it up to size! I love that tic tac toe quilt too… excited to see how you are thinking of quilting it 🙂 Have a nice Wednesday… we just got back from our first trip to Asheville.. was nice 🙂 Kathi

yes I got the border finished and will show it tomorrow and it is all squared up now and ready for the next round in a week or so

    everything is looking great:)

    • Karen Apr 25, 2018 @ 18:11

thanks – it is nice and squared up now and the right size!

Ooh, I bet you were cross when you realised the measurements were wrong. Luckily you have come up with Plan B, and as you say, who will know about the added fabric once it if finished and quilted.

    • Karen Apr 25, 2018 @ 18:12

yes I was but all is well and it is corrected and the right size!

  • audrey Apr 25, 2018 @ 18:14

Your Hertfordshire quilt is coming along so well! Love the look to it and all those tiny pieces are very special looking. Too bad about your sashing being too narrow, but it sounds like you’ve come up with the perfect solution. Like you say, it won’t even show when the quilt is totally finished!

    • Karen Apr 25, 2018 @ 18:29

And it worked! I got the sashing on today and with it being the exact same fabric and pressing the seams open so it isn’t lumpy it will work out just fine
