Are We Sure it is Spring?

For Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy I will finish the binding on the Critters quilt – almost done and it is for Sarah’s Hands2Help – one side of the binding is left to do and then wash and dry it and send it off soon to the Little Lambs Foundation for foster children – and when I get done with that I will work on the bird quilt.

I washed sheets yesterday and redid the bed with a different quilt – I change them  every month or so.  This Traditional Red and Green Applique Quilt is a favorite of mine – from start to finish it took about 3 years to needle turn applique and hand quilt – I finished it in 2014.   I used patterns from 2 books that had this kind of applique and mixing the blocks really worked out well.  I am also linking to Quilting is More Fun than Housework today.

Working on the big center block was a joy – all those little circles I think there was around 70 of them or so.

Baby it is cold out there – what the heck is going on with April – yes we have had nice days but we are having some very chilly days too – Saturday was a high of a very windy cold 53 degrees – the sun was beautiful after the stormy Friday we had but the wind chill made it feel like 40 degrees – down in the low 30’s last night and the ferns were covered up again and Sunday night/Monday morning we might get down to 31 again.  I know I am lucky to only have the weather to complain about – but give me spring already!

Mike and I took a drive yesterday and stopped at an old campground to take some photos of the Illinois Bayou – it is rushing fast water with all the rain we have had recently – look at this water.  This is about 15 miles north of us by the bluffs.  In the summer and low water time you can walk across this easily.  People wade in it in the summer.  It has been years since we stopped here and such a short drive really.

That is our truck up there this was an easy walk

Each campsite (not many) have a stone house with a fireplace inside of it (we do get a bit of rain so this is a nice feature for sure) there is also a fire pit outside to use as well so it is just up to you.   This is black bear country so you always have to make sure to leave no food outside.  We have never spotted a bear on our land but they do live in Arkansas and have actually been spotted in near by towns at times.

Here is the inside – probably built back in the 1930’s when a lot of the old CCC campgrounds were built to help give jobs to men in the depression era.

A little quilting of course was done on Tumalo Trails as well – this is from Friday night

Karen.. have fun today finishing that binding and washing that cut Critters quilt ready to gift… then working on a bird or two 😀
I LOVE the quilt you put on your bed !!! It is an amazing finish and one to be enjoyed for a long long time … I hope to have many to rotate through eventually… that is my goal now that I know the colors and style we are going for I just need a stash that agrees with that! lol So glad you enjoyed all that applique esp those circles… did you use templates to get them so nice and round or is it lots of practice that does that??
I am amazed at the water you found near you home in the bayou and the campground looks very cool. Be careful for sure of leaving food out though if that is bear country!! wowee!! Hope you stay warm inside today … we are getting rain today and cooling tonite and tomorrow but we have had excellent weather the last 2 days. Now time to rain and chill off a bit I guess. Have a blessed day with your hand work! I will be watching my Craftsy Unlimited and working on apple cores still I think! We shall see 😀 Kathi

I have a circle tutorial on my side bar and that is how I do the circle – cut, gather around template, starch and press = perfect circles.
We have lived here 38 years and never have seen a bear here – my brother 25 miles from me has seen several, there have been photos in the newspaper of several in trees in the closest town – I guess they don’t like my place and that is fine with me 🙂
I am so glad that you are enjoying Craftsy Unlimited so much and getting your money’s worth for sure!!

Your applique quilt is such an accomplishment ! Such a quilt certainly displays the skills of a quilter. Might this be a Baltimore Beauty?

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 7:47

I don’t know if this red and green quilt is considered a Baltimore Beauty or Album – it is made in the same style but the blocks are much simpler as some have so much in them where as mine is “simpler” actually – maybe someone reading will know.

Your red and green quilt is a treasure!

I do love this quilt and so glad I made it because I have been so off applique in recent years that I do not know if I will ever do another although I have one in the works – I might have to take it camping with me as an only project so I can get the center done and then I can start on the outside squares!!

I remember the red and green quilt / nice to see it again. It looks gorgeous on the bed. That’s some wild rushing water there! That rain is coming our way later on today…they predict several inches and heavy downfalls.

Those little stone cabins look so nice for camping / cooking / just hanging out in for awhile!

We love these rustic type of campgrounds – we have never used this one, the road getting into it is a little tight at the start of it and we could probably get in it ok but haven’t tried it. It is very pretty at this time of year with the excess water.

Fun idea to swap quilts monthly. I should swap them more often too:)

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 8:17

I like to get use out of my quilts and I have so many I find it easy to just change them every month and rotate use

WOW how many beautiful itens in this post. Your donation quilt is bright and happy . It will warm someone in need. Beautiful quilt for a great cause. Your applique quilt is just stunning!!! Beautiful pictures from the camper.
Have fun hand quilting Happy stitching.

thank you – yes there are a lot of pretty quilts, I have made a lot of them over the years.
We are not camping but took the photos of the campground as it is not a long drive to it from our house – it is a very rustic campground with only water available for drinking part of the year it is shut off in the winter and a rustic toilet.

Well, it was spring yesterday, but today. . .not so much. Love the happy yellow Critters quilt! Sure to be appreciated.

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 8:19

I’m glad Critters turned out as it has and not one pucker in the quilting! straight lines I can handle for machine quilting 🙂

I have one of the books you used for your red and green quilt. I love the simple border you chose; it frames the blocks beautifully.

We have an inch of snow on the ground this morning here in eastern Kansas. So, no, it doesn’t feel like spring at all.

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 8:48

I always have to go looking for the books I used to remember the names of them, I remember one was by Jeanna Kimball but don’t remember the other until I go to the book shelf and the border was from a totally different book and it was actually a short border that I made longer – I just didn’t want to take the time by then to make an elaborate border as I wanted it to be done 🙂
We are lucky to be far enough south that we haven’t been getting the snow

What a beautiful quilt that is on your bed – a lot of work went into that one! I enjoyed the photos of your drive, too. Looks like a neat spot! Enjoy your stitching today, Karen!

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 8:49

thanks! I have always loved this quilt and glad I took the time to make it. I can’t believe I took the time to quilt a half inch grid though!

  • Dottie bishaw Apr 15, 2018 @ 10:36

What a beauty your quilt on your bed is! I have never seen this quilt before, it’s simply amazing, now I know why you have such skill in applique! What a treasure it is. Your charity quilt is so pretty with that yellow binding. I like the campground too, so pretty with all that rushing water and the stonehouse. While visiting my son who lives in Florida and has 3 acres, we saw a mother bear and her two cubs crossing the yard one morning. He said a couple of weeks ago he had a panther come by, really scary. Thank you for the beautiful pictures. Enjoy sewing your binding on.

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 12:17

I made the applique quilt some time ago I have made a lot of others as well, I guess that is why I am kind of slow with my applique now I kind of got burned out on it

  • Cynthia Brunz Apr 15, 2018 @ 11:01

I hope to some day have a nice selection of quilts for my bed. That appliqué quilt is stunning! Thanks for sharing all your lovely quilts with Oh Scrap!

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 12:18

your welcome Cynthia – I make so many bed quilts I could change out every month!

  • Deb Apr 15, 2018 @ 14:01

So glad you were safe through the storms. I really, really need to quilt the quilt I am sending off to little lambs. I think that will be my Thursday project… now that that day opened up. Thanks for the reminder!

Love the appliqué quilt. Those little cabins sure do provide a good shelter if needed.

    • Karen Apr 15, 2018 @ 14:53

The little quilt is in the wash for the second time – I wasn’t expecting to see any color in the color catcher and there was! Moda fabric prints don’t usually do that. It will be ok just wanted to make sure it is all out.
