Daffodils and Bird Brain

Well the daffodils are not blooming but look what I saw today when I was wandering the yard!  The earliest variety of daffodils that are sometimes peaking a yellow blossom out of snow are popping up out of the ground!!  Spring is coming – well in another month or so maybe – we always have some early buds though so I won’t be surprised to see flowers by the middle of February.

That got me looking for more signs of spring and sure enough some of the trees are starting the earliest signs of growth – well be awhile – we don’t want them to try and get leaves too early

I worked on Bird Brain yesterday and plan to again today.

Managed to finish two birds to add to the wall  The two birds on the right side are the newest additions.  I hadn’t realized I was getting quite so many sun flares hitting the wall or I would have shut the blind – that time of the year for this side of the house in the late afternoon.  I haven’t quite decided how I will be doing a layout for these, it might be nice to stagger the rows so that are not even and have the feet resting on brown sashing mimicking tree branches – not sure just a thought for now.  Haven’t touched those mini hexes in quilt awhile and doubt this piece will grow much larger than it is now.  These are half inch hexies I think it will be a table runner probably will stay this width and just make it longer.  The mini hexie piece is called “Granny’s Gone Crazy”

The fabric and patterns for Bird Brain get stored in the “treasure chest” box.

Wow! Daffodils! The paper whites I planted indoors are sprouting but there aren’t any buds yet. It will be a long time before we see spring here.

Love that bird brain quilt – saw the pattern on Craftsy but resisted the urge to download (for once!).

I bought a couple paperwhites in bulb vases a last month for the house and they flowered already and now I have a purple hyacinth in a bulb vase and that is flowering right now I will be glad when the daffodils start to bloom even though I know we will still get cold weather – these are an early variety that come up every year in February
This Bird pattern that I have is not from Craftsy I saw it in Pinterest – it is all over the place there

Daffodils! We’re definitely not at that stage here. Way to much snow to even see the ground, although it’s supposed to warm up today so some melting will happen. Love the Bird Brain quilt, it’s so fun! Those little mini hexies are really small, yikes! I don’t know if I would’ve made it to a table runner! It will be lovely as a table runner though!

I just work on the tiny hexies now and then when I feel like it, they have been in progress for almost a year now I bet. Yes I bet you do not see your earliest daffodils until what end of March or April?

We don’t have real signs of Spring yet but it’s not been quite as cold as 2 weeks ago so I’m happy!

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 8:13

we well all be glad when spring gets here I bet – or most of us I’m sure there are some that really like winter

I will enjoy your early spring signs since they come much sooner than mine! Bright and cheery design wall with those cute birds 🙂

I started to check for the daffodils last week already 🙂 I knew I would be seeing them soon and it always perks me up!

So envious of your obvious signs of spring. And your pieced birds are beautiful!

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 9:59

thanks – they are pretty cute aren’t they and love seeing signs of spring

Your bird blocks are great – it looks like fun to pull out different scraps and see what personality each new bird will have! How nice to see the daffodils sprouting, too! We might see that happening here by the end of February, and blooms maybe in March. I’m definitely looking forward to those days!

I always look forward to these first signs of spring and I know we will still have several or more cold spells but seeing those daffodils start to pop out of the ground is always such a satisfying thing to see.
yes the birds are fun to do and take such little fabric for each

Ooh, I love those first signs of Spring! So exciting! Your Bird Brain and Granny Gone Crazy projects are both looking wonderful, but aren’t you being a bit hard on yourself with those titles? (Hee hee!)

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 10:17

LOL – and the two dear jane quilts I did are “Insanity” and “Insanity Revisited” 🙂

Pretty birds! They are cute and I like the idea of ‘branches’ sashing.

What size are the hexis? I’m currently working with ones just a hair under 3/4 inch per side. (What can I say, Aunt Lottie had a very non-standard seam allowance that I’m trying to match!) I have papers for true 3/4 inch and I’m going to be doing a panel of those for the sampler quilt at some point. But I was thinking about trying some smaller ones.

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 11:27

the hexie on the quilting frame are 7/8″ and the tiny ones on the wall are 1/2″

  • Fred Jan 26, 2018 @ 11:21

Cute birds, they look nice all together. Lucky you, you have sun!!

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 11:27

we have sun sometimes – clouds moved back in and maybe rain tonight and tomorrow!

  • Kathi Jan 26, 2018 @ 16:25

I love all your different project boxes… makes it an adventure to open each one!
I had forgotten about Granny Gone Crazy and LOVE it too! Your birds are cute and I hope to see daffodils soon if this crazy weather will settle and let them come on up. I know it may be early but I love spring flowers in your yard blooming!!! lol Kathi Oh … can’t wait for Handful of Scraps to come out of the frame and get bound and washed… it will be phenomenal I predict!!!

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 17:15

well it will be a little while before the quilt on the frame is finished but it is coming along nicely well be able to roll it down again tonight or tomorrow I think. I like having project boxes keeps everything so nice and organized!

Pretty birds. And it’s good to see sping is coming. Have a nice weekend!

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 17:15

thanks! the birds are cute aren’t they

  • Carla Therrien Jan 26, 2018 @ 18:23

Those bird blocks are a riot! I bet they are fun to sew. I hope Spring brings us some much needed rain. We had to turn on the irrigation this week to make sure the landscaping doesn’t wither away.

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 19:08

the birds are fun and actually rather easy once you get going on them and decide what method is easiest for you.
Like you we have not had a lot of rain the past six months. We have had some this winter but are still nearly at drought levels I believe – maybe we will have a rainy spring (just not bad storms I hope)

  • BillieBee Jan 26, 2018 @ 19:54

I have paper whites that come up every year, but never bloom. Love your Bird Brain block.

    • Karen Jan 26, 2018 @ 21:40

might depend on your weather – here in Arkansas old varieties of tulips for instance will bloom year after year but the new variety’s don’t and we have to refrigerate them for several months in the fall and then plant them in late November if we want blooms – a lot – me included just buy new bulbs if we want tulips – I have also had poor luck with hycathin’s and paper whites – sometimes they bloom and some years they don’t

  • Lynette Jan 29, 2018 @ 9:59

Superb storage for Bird Brain, which is a great project to start with. I love having pretty boxes for my quilts in progress 🙂

    • Karen Jan 29, 2018 @ 10:07

I know what you mean – I was so mad when Tuesday Morning went out of business here – that is where I was finding a lot of my cute decorative storage boxes – now I have to figure out what other stores have them – my daughter got me the Treasury box when she was shopping one day
