Y’all know I have been watching my garden ready to fence it up if I thought deer were beginning to nibble well they attacked the green beans on Monday night – not just a nibble! I had to get the wire out and start to fence in those green beans yesterday – it is the same bed that the sweet potatoes will go in later – as soon as the beans are done the plan is to pull them out and put the sweet potatoes there – the deer liked them too. I should have put the wire up in advance but it had looked like the deer were going to skip me this year.
I had gotten most of it done myself but needed Mike’s help to pound in one pole and then he helped by cutting the last section of wire that I needed. Now I don’t know about you but when I get a fat quarter bundle and it is wrapped nicely in a Moda Tie or whatever brand I save the tie – sometimes it will become a drawstring, I have pinned them cushions to tie the swing cushions to the swing so they don’t blow away in wind – well I need to be able to get in this fenced area to pick the beans when ready and pea pods if on that side so I got out my trusty bag of strings and used them. Now it is tied shut and I can untie when I need to pick. What do you use them for or do you toss them? I have a gallon zip lock bag full of them.
I don’t know if you can see where the deer have eaten but they basically munch off the top of the plants.
The neighbors dog that lives down the road from us must have a keen sense of hearing as he should up a short while after we got started and followed up to the porch wanting some attention. Cute friendly dog – but he is shedding right now – not nice!
And I now have 41 baskets finished – more to go by a long shot – I think I still have about 5 or 6 waiting that are prepped. I don’t have many strings because I don’t buy many FQ bundles. But I do save selvages and use those to wrap packages instead of ribbon. I do feel your pain about the deer. Some years I forget to spray “Deer Away” before the deer get at my hosta and daylilies. They seem to like the tender, new shoots. This year, luckily, I sprayed early and so far the plants are safe and almost up completely. Long ago, when I lived farther out in the country and grew corn, those raccoons knew exactly the best day to eat corn. It was always the day before I was planning to freeze it, and they always took several bites out of each ear. Ugh!

I wondered if the deer would arrive. Every year I think my Hostas will be spared but I always find out the hard way. I save all the ties and the sheer and pretty ribbons that come on packages. I too have a big tub of them. I use them to tie up little gifts from table runners to knitted wash cloths, it adds a festive touch and I don’t have to bother with wrapping paper.

I do not have issues with deer – just rabbits. They sure did some damage. I’ll bet they even try to eat through the wire. Lovely little baskets all in rows. ~smile~

As a city girl I would love to spot some deer in my tiny city garden. I had no idea they come so close to your houses and eat your vegetables! We have to go to a National Park to actually see some! Love your baskets!
The friendly neighbor dog should have been on deer watch! Where are they when they’re needed? “Under the hay stack, fast asleep!” I hope your beans recover from the damage.
Oh yes I know your frustration with the deer. We have a love hate relationship with ours!! They usually chomp all the hosta’s, so I have been spraying with the very stinky liquid fence, so far so good, but if I let off it they’ll be gone in a night. There is so much other vegetation they could eat instead!!!!!!!!
Those deer must have been just lurking waiting for the beans to be at their best, lol! Glad you got your fence up. Your baskets look wonderful all together like that. I’ll have to put mine up soon too to see how they look. My dentist visit went fine for my implants, just a bit painful. Pain meds are helping, another visit tomorrow. Beautiful cool day here after the rains. Maybe some basket stitching after a much needed nap. Have a wonderful day in Arkansas.
I noticed a few beans that the deer had eaten here as well. 🙁 Pesky deer! We will put out a few scarecrows and whatever else that we can. In the field that we have our garden in we have one section of garden that is 200ft long and 2 other sections that are over 100ft long so it’s hard to fence it in. Hopefully we planted enough for us and the deer. LOL!

Last year, my dad, stepmom, and I planted a garden in raised beds, since none of us is getting any younger and stooping to garden was too hard. The deer were ever so grateful to us for providing them a banquet at a more convenient height for grazing… (They ate EVERYTHING, right down to the roots. *sigh*)
