The Postage Stamp Quilt

I have had many of you over the last several weeks ask how is it going with the hand quilting on the Postage Stamp quilt – I must admit that I do not care for sitting on the couch with the hoop and that big quilt draped all over the place trying to quilt it.  I was so used to the 3 roller that I seem to only like hand quilting on it and not the hoop.  But after all the questions I thought I better get back to work on it and have put in 4 hours of quilting over the last couple days.  It is hard to show progress on it as it all looks the same but here is the area I am working on.  This is the 3rd section in the time since I started yesterday – so progress!

This is how much room this quilt takes up – that might make it easier to understand how it is hard to work with on the couch

Several of you have asked for close ups of the neutral colors being used in the Propeller quilt – here are some – also asked was how do I decide what piece to use where – I really just grab and put something in place and see if I like it – if I do I use it if I don’t I look to see what another will look like.  There is no big plan – the joy of scraps is almost anything works.

I decided that I will add this red border next – it is a print I don’t know if you can see that in the photo – it is just pinned to the wall right now and I will try to sew it today.  Next up will be a mixture of the neutrals again – I think in about 6 inch strips or so patched together, then another of the red – something like that anyhow.   This red just sets it off nicely I think – I had a 4 yard piece in the stash that I got for $3.99 a yard from Hancock’s of Paducah several years ago.  Linking to Confessions of a Fabric Addict and Crazy Mom Quilts.

For those interested here are a few Craftsy deals if anyone is interested that I received an update on last night.

First off a 33% discount on a new class by Marti Michell –“You piece your quilts in sections, so why not quilt them that way too? Join author Marti Michell and discover clever joining techniques to quilt your quilts in smaller, more manageable sections on your own machine.”  I have never tried this and usually it is all three layers in pieces but from what I read it sounds like this one it is the batting in pieces not all three layers unless I didn’t understand it right.  Click on the photo for the link.class

The red border really looks nice on the quilt. I wouldn’t like having a big quilt on my lap either trying to quilt it. I guess it is what a person is used to. I know a lady who hand quilts in a hoop all the time and she has quilted queen sized quilts!

Your propeller quilt is so much fun! The red border looks great and your neutrals are wonderful. It is a challenge to change methods no matter what we are doing, but your hand quilting is coming along.

It looks awesome with that red!

The red border is a perfect choice, really sets the quilt off. I abandoned the hoop for my first hand quilting…my piece is so small that the 14 inch hoop was just too cumbersome. I also made the mistake of using cotton batting so my stitches are not as small as I’d like them to be but they are straight and even. Live and lean, good thing it’s just a wall hanging.

You are so dedicated! I probably would have waited until I could put the quilt back on the 3-roller to finish it. The propellers look really nice. Where can I find the pattern?

Your postage stamp quilt is totally worth the effort, it is looking fantastic!

I’ve only hand quilted one quilt and it was quite big enough that I struggled to get myself in the right position to actually quilt it – plus it was pretty warm underneath! So worth it when it was finished though 🙂

The red border is just perfect! It seems to just set the Propellers off just right. I’m anxious to see the next step, so exciting to watch it come together. Boy, I didn’t realize how big Postage Stamp is until you showed the picture of it on the couch. How big is the hexie quilt going to be?
