Scrappy Stars–Finished

Yes the top is done!  Nice feeling to have another finish this early in the year.  Bigger than I had originally intended – but this is a nice size and I can still do the quilting by my machine if I want to.  The Juki can handle a big quilt.   I’m not rushing into quilting it immediately I plan on taking a short break from it!  Finished at 79 x 92 inches.  I could have made it square like I do a lot of mine but it would have meant doing one more row and I was running low on a variety of aqua fabric and only have two colors left.

When I started the 16 patch centers this box was full of 2 inch squares – now–  A very noticeable dent has been made in the 2 inch box!!!  And that is a good feeling – sometimes when making a scrap quilt you feel like no progress was made in the scraps – this time there was.  I was down to mostly browns and greens and of course the white which I had not used.  I managed to find enough color variety to finish the last sashing last night.

The Scrappy Stars top finished!  And it does look totally different than I had originally planned – once I added the scrappy sashing it completely changed the look of it.  Linking to Confessions of a Fabric Addict and Fort Worth Fabric Studio and A Quilting Readers Garden.

A close up.  I used the Accu Quilt cutter for some of it – I do not have one for the 2 inch squares and most of those had been cut a long time ago – the white squares are 3 inches finished cut with die # 55701 and the star point units are made with #55703 also finishing at 3 inches – you of course do not need the die’s I just happened to have the right size and made use of them.

Congratulations, Karen. It looks great! I love the scrappy look. Will be curious to see how you quilt it.

I’m impressed that your box of squares is so neat. Mine are just tossed in and mixed up. I use them a lot, but some need ironing when I do. Same with my 2.5″ box. My HST box (various sizes) is at least a little neater.

not sure how I will be quilted it at this point but if I do machine quilt it – it will be straight or slightly wavy lines – that is the only way I do machine quilting. I always keep my scrap boxes with the pieces stacked up so I can see what I have in them – they are pressed and ready to use. the only boxes that are a bit of a mess right now are the strings and a box of white pieces – I really need to go through that one.

not that fast, I started it in November but just worked on it here and there, I really got to work on it in early January but then took time off to help my sister otherwise it would have been done by now. now to get back to work on the baskets and air ships

It looks beautiful. The size is nice. I can’t wait to see how you quilt this.

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 6:18

thanks Jan -if I do it by machine I will do straight lines

Congratulations on this big, beautiful scrappy delight! Those aqua stars really shine! It must feel great to have made such a big dent in the scrap department.

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 6:49

yes I’m glad to see a dent in the scraps – but so many more to use!

  • Barbara Feb 17, 2017 @ 6:44

Wow! Congrats on another beautiful quilt.

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 6:49

thanks Barbara – I’m glad to have it done

I just love all of it! The scrappy sashing just makes it sparkle. One word of advice- the outside edge of the quilt with the 2″ squares- if you just put a binding on that when quilted, it may end up funky or uneven due to quilting. If you add a thin strip of whatever fabric around the quilt, you have somewhere to trim and bind.

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 7:27

thanks – it does sparkle doesn’t it

  • Celia Feb 17, 2017 @ 7:22

Time well spent ! This is a happy, peppy quilt…puts out a good vibe. If it were mine, I would lay it out as you have , and think “Wow,, I did this !”

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 7:40

Your scrappy stars top looks fantastic! I really love the scrappy sashing idea. Don’t know that I’ve seen that before, but it really ties in nicely with the star centers and makes your scrappy quilt look a lot more balanced and “organized” than most.

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 14:16

thanks Rebecca – it was just on off the cuff idea at the last minutes – I was going to do aqua sashing then kept looking at that box of 2 inch pieces needing to be used up – I’m so glad it worked out

  • Kathi Feb 17, 2017 @ 11:08

  • Clara Feb 17, 2017 @ 15:18

So pretty! A perfect scrappy quilt! How big are your squares for the center 16 patch of each star? Are they 2 1/2 or 2 inch squares?

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 15:23

the scrappy pieces are 2 inch squares. I’d been cutting them for a long time – glad I was able to make use of them

  • Janice Holton Feb 17, 2017 @ 16:51

Karen, this is one of my favorite quilts that you have made. It’s got a very welcoming, cozy and happy look to it. Just curious, do you sell your quilts on Etsy or anything?

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 18:11

I have never tried selling my quilts on Etsy – there is so much competition for quilts I wouldn’t think it is easy to get noticed. I am almost always willing to sell a quilt though and occasionally sell a quilt through a contact at a gift shop in Little Rock – but I haven’t been too active with it the last couple of years. I sometimes wonder if I added a link on my blog to a list of quilts for sale if I would have any luck – if anyone is ever interested in buying one of my quilts I would be willing to discuss price for sure

Oh Karen, it’s so beautiful all finished. I love it, congratulations! It seemed to go so fast. The colors are so wonderful they just sparkle. It will be so awesome when quilted! I’m looking forward to seeing you’re baskets again.

    • Karen Feb 17, 2017 @ 20:18

thanks Dottie – once the blocks started to turn into rows it did go fast – I’m not sure when I will get back to the baskets but hope to get a few of those prepped soon so I will have them sitting out to pick up now and then and get busy

  • Nanette Feb 17, 2017 @ 21:39

  • Vicki W Feb 18, 2017 @ 8:15

The scrappy borders were a lot more work but it really makes the quilt! I love it!

    • Karen Feb 18, 2017 @ 8:58

Yes but the chain piecing went quickly – it was searching through the box to find more than brown or green squares in it – I didn’t realize I had cut so many of those colors

  • Angiein SoCal Feb 19, 2017 @ 20:26

That is a great top, and all those scraps – woohoo. Congrats on your big finish. Thanks for linking to WIPs Be Gone – this one sure is a gonner.
