Thank you all for you ideas that you suggested yesterday for my Williamsburg Beauty quilt. I don’t think a lot of you understood that this is to be a big bed size quilt – right now it is only 43 inches square so it needs to be a lot bigger than it is right now. Also I want it to be a Medallion style quilt so more borders will be added. We do not have a lot of wall space for wall hangings only a little room here and there – this quilt as is would need a nice area for it to hang right. I really like to make bed size quilts and most of my quilts are quite large – about 100 x 100 inches normally.
Some of you mentioned a cluster of flowers and leaves, vine in the corners and I think that is what I want also – I made some more hexies today for flowers and need to make three more and then I might make a couple more to replace a few that blended in to the background too much. This vine shown is not really ready for applique, I had a strip of green and just folded it and pinned in place to see what it would be like. The next border might be lighter – you really can’t tell from the photo but the two applique blocks in the center that look white actually have stripes in them of a gold/ beige color that border will have something on it too.
To give you an idea of Medallion quilts with a historic type look here are a couple I took from pinterest. This first quilt is actually one I was going to follow as I have the pattern but I couldn’t get into all the shapes so decided to not use it for this quilt. Maybe by seeing all of these Medallion quilts here you can get a better understanding of the direction I want to go in. Each border as you can see is quite different. I wanted you to have a better understanding of the kind of quilt I am doing and how many different types of borders are used. If you click on any of these photos it should take you to pinterest and then from there to the location of the quilt. In the fourth photo if you look at the diamond shapes in two of the borders that is something I like and might incorporate into one of the borders.
I rolled down The Final Frontier last night and the end is just about in sight! the only part not showing now is the final sashing border on the top of the quilt – all the circles left to quilt are in full view. I started quilting on July 31st so I have been quilting almost two and half months now and have over 100 hours of quilting in it. I love your vining with your mini hexi flowers… maybe a lighter green though.. or would that be too much for this round??? Love your examples of medallion quilts you are using as your inspiration tho!!! I totally got that it was to be a large quilt though? The darker green vine just seems to disappear on the browns background.
Most of our post Matthew clean up is done now… hope to process the pics I have and blog about this adventure soon though :). Everywhere there are very large piles of debris… our city is sending a contractor out to pick up the curbside piles of wood and fencing today I saw!!! That will be nice for sure to get some normalcy back when out around town 😉

Hope you got your bulbs all planted … sorry you haven’t had much rain of late… guess Matthew caused that… North Carolina really took a LOT of flooding from the end of that too! They said our are only got a bit over 5″ of rain during the hurricane pass… to see the further devastation this hurricane caused from Haiti to the USA is just astounding!!!! Hopefully all will get back to normal soon for all of us!!!

yes the green vine could be lighter – It was just handy to grab for an example. Glad your clean up is going well. Not surprised I didn’t mention my niece living in St. Augustine going to college I do not know her well, she is one of the few that do not live in Arkansas and she grew up on the east coast I never saw her a lot and do not know her well.

I don’t have any suggestions for flowers or vines. You are better at that than I am. I do suggest you put the medallion on point when you start adding pieced borders. I always think that makes a quilt more interesting somehow. Someday I’m going to make that Kim McLean quilt, but not this year. Have a great day! Blessings, Gretchen

Bravo to you for continuing on with your Williamsburg Beauty. I finished 10 Caswell blocks and decided I just didn’t like them. I bagged the whole thing – blocks & patterns – and gave them all the my girlfriend. She is having a blast figuring out how to make them into a quilt. I rarely give up on a quilt, but I just didn’t have it in me to finish.
I moved on to Forever Blooming, a P3 Design pattern. I’m enjoying it a lot more.
I really like that diamond shaped border and look forward to seeing how you incorporate it into your quilt.
thanks Lynn – I have 2 or 3 more Caswell blocks done and they are in the box but I don’t think I will use them for this quilt – nice that you handed yours off to a friend – after awhile I just didn’t want to make that quilt. I have had that happened to me more times than I like to admit the past 4 years or so. I love the diamond border too and will try to make it work somehow
I love the direction you are laying out for this one!!! I, too, have no space for more wall quilts nor do most of the (family) recipients of such. To design and finish the larger quilt is so much more satisfying (when I do them!…..normally I prefer the final stitching!). Your “planet” quilt (my name for it…hehe) is wonderful!!!! One of the more appealing quilts I’ve seen!!!!!!!
thanks Doreen! I love bed quilts and love changing them off on the bed and when I tire of them I sometimes hand them off to family so I don’t get too many stacked up waiting to be used 🙂 I was told by so many that the circles resemble planets – hence the StarTrek name “The Final Frontier”
Wow, those Medallion Quilts look like tapestries. That’s a lot of work and border planning. I am in a round robin group of friends and we’re going to do a medallion challenge this year, but they will be small hangings with only five borders around them.
A round Robin might be easier! the only thing I don’t like about doing that with a group is what if you do not like the borders others add to yours – I would be so disappointed
Your circles quilt is stunning. Little bits of time really add up. I like medallion quilts as well. One is on my bucket list for sure. Yours — slowly is developing into a masterpiece. I just know it will be beautiful.

no I have the hexie flowers just about complete I think they will work out fine and those of you that do not like them will find that they blend into the quilt as more borders are added.
Love the medallion! I think medallion style quilts are so interesting. Definitely on my bucket list!

Oh, Karen — I LOVE those antique medallion quilts! And I can’t wait to see how yours comes together. My favorite of the ones you found on Pinterest is the one on the top right. I love that skinny border with the white zigzag, and I also love how the large applique blocks go in the outer border rather than the center of the quilt whereas quilters today would most commonly put the applique sampler blocks in the center of the quilt. I am now going to pin that one on MY Pinterest board! 🙂
and one day you can make one just like it 🙂 when you stop working maybe? I know how busy you are. It is fun to plan each border and sometimes have to throw it away and start over again I like that white zigzag too
