Thanksgiving printable turned framed art

Thanksgiving printable eccentricitiesbyjvg

In keeping with the autumn décor ideas, I wanted to work on a sign that I could use for Thanksgiving.  Using a printable as a starting point is a good idea because you can have exactly what you are looking for and is another easy way to bring something unique to the décor of the home.

This post contains affiliate links which means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission at no cost to you.  As an Amazon Associate I earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. See full disclosure here.

I quickly made the Thanksgiving printable using Canva, I started using Canva a few months after I started this blog, and it is so easy to use.  It has become one of my favorite software to use for this blogging adventure.  Once in Canva, I chose to set my own dimensions.  Since I already had an 8×10 inches canvas at home, those were the dimensions I used.  Of course, the printable can be made in any size you want and are able to print.  For my Thanksgiving printable, I kept it simple only using words.

You can download the printable for you to use here.

I have created a few more printables that I shared in my Fall Printables for home décor post and the Winter Paper Cut Out Effect free printable post. Head over to those posts and grab those for free as well.

How to make a beautiful sign from a Thanksgiving printable

Gather the materials

printable turned beautiful sign materials

  • Printable (get it here)
  • 8×10 inches canvas
  • mod podge
  • brown paint
  • paint foam brushes
  • scissors
  • paper cutter
  • 2 of 8 inch (1/4 in x 1.5 in wood for frame)
  • 2 of 10.5 inch (1/4 in x 1.5 in wood for frame)
  • ~20 of 5/8 x 18 brad nails
  • red mahogany stain

Make the Thanksgiving sign

Printable turned beautiful sign steps

  1. After printing out the canvas on standard paper.  Cut the printable to the size of the canvas (8×10 inches).
  2. Apply mod podge on the canvas and place the printable on the canvas removing the wrinkles from the middle of the canvas towards the outside.  Work quickly on this because the mod podge dries fairly quickly.  For this project, I removed some of the wrinkles but not all of them because I was looking for a more rustic style on the sign.  Apply mod podge to the edges to make sure the printable has fully adhered to the canvas.
  3. Using a foam brush and the brown paint gives a layer of texture to the edges of the sign and using a very light up and down stroke gives a bit of extra texture to the inside of the sign.  This will give it a rustic look.
  4. While the paint is drying, stain the pieces of wood for the frame and allow it to fully dry.

This is a very simple frame because I did not want to get into cutting the wood at the 45 degrees angles needed for a standard type of frame.  And I like the box style since I can keep the art standing up on the table.

For the 8-inch side, cut the piece of wood right at 8 inches to be flush with the edge. Then, for the 10-inch side just cut 10.5 inches long.

Build the frame for the transformation of the unique Home Décor from Thanksgiving Printable

To build the frame I used 4 to 5 brads to attach each piece of wood.  Attach the end brads first then the center brads.

The last step is to seal the sign with a coat of clear sealant.

This Thanksgiving sign goes well with the fall theme and décor.  The colors I used go well with some of the décor in other areas of the house I am sure it will be out all year long.

Jasmine – what a great idea! I would have tried to figured out how to paint or draw on the canvas, but modge podging the printable is brilliant – and I love the finishing touches of the frame too – thanks for sharing tonight at #WayWow – I am pinning for later, I always need something new to add to my fall decor. Especially since I can’t find just what I am looking for — now I can make it!

Thanks Debbie. I think that using the mod podge also takes less time to complete the project as well. I am glad you liked the idea.

Jasmine, I thought for sure this was something from Hobby Lobby or a similar store! I love that you made it. I haven’t seen anything quite like it before, you did such a great job. The brown wood frame really sets off the print, and you did a great job aging it.

I bet it looks great in your home, it deserves a place of prominence, it’s a great reminder to be thankful always.

Hello Nikki, it is an honor that you think the DIY sign could be something form a craft store. I love working on crafts, and its encouraging to see this kind of feedback. I agree it is a great reminder to be thankful always, I have placed it on a side table where we can see it everyday!
