Baking and Sewing

A busy day! Made a pie and granola, cut hexies and finished a ring around the flower hexie that I started yesterday, quilted a little bit on Final Frontier.  Melanie came over last night and there is a new/old (started awhile ago) needle work to show.

First this is the area I was working on the circles for a little bit late yesterday afternoon.  I am almost done with this first length all the way across and would have been done and rolled it down if it hadn’t been for my routine changing a little while the Olympics are on.

Melanie’s needle work.  Yes she does this craft fast and is constantly working on another one.  Someone had asked last week what thread does she use – just regular embroidery thread – she is on a strict budget.  Gets her linen at Hobby Lobby with the coupon or at discount stores here and there and her patterns are all from library books or found on the internet and she makes a chart on paper and goes from there.

The reddish hexie in the lower right is pinned in place I will now go back to working neutrals in between basting more neutrals.  I must have cut out another 100 easily yesterday with the accuquit.

Skillet Apple Pie with a crumb topping.  Place one crust in the skillet (I sprayed with non-stick spray first) make your apple pie filling as you normally would but don’t have it heaping on the top – I used 5 apples.  Make a crumb top that you like  – mine includes chopped walnuts.   If you need the recipe let me know but really you can use any for it.  Place over the top and bake for 45 minutes at 375 or until done.  Top with ice cream if you wish when you serve.

Homemade granola is my breakfast choice in the morning – they always say oatmeal is very good for you but I hate oatmeal cooked – I hate any hot breakfast cereal – always have disliked it – maybe because that is what breakfast was most days as a child and I hated it then and had to eat it or go hungry — my granola is oats, nuts, ground flax seed, almond meal, raisins, a tad of sugar , honey and oil.  This recipe makes about 8 cups.  I go through spells of eating this for months, then I don’t make it for a couple months then back to it again.

Karen, I appreciate you mentioning Melanie & her tight budget. I am a tight budget quilter. Most of my fabric has been given to me by my boss. It is older LQS fabric that she either grew tired of or just doesn’t want. She has given me boxes & bags full over the last ten years. Much of it is large yardage. And while I might love to pick out those new “candy colors” that are so popular right now, I just can’t afford it. I also cross-stitch with kits I was given too. Someone once told me they throw away the embroidery thread in kits and buy new/expensive thread. I think I involuntarily shuddered. I feel alone in the “budget” category as it seems everyone else can seem to buy what they want but being a single parent leaves little-no money for frivolity. Good for Melanie for using the library! I have managed to get some really nice books from ours. Have a nice weekend.

I shouldn’t be reading this when I should be making dinner. Now I want apple pie. I could have that for dinner, right? I like the circles quilt as well as your hexies! That Melanie is indeed speedy!!

    Melanie’s needlework is beautiful!
That apple pie sounds delicious….I may have to make one soon! I have been making peach cobbler and blackberry cobbler recently…. An apple pie would be a nice change…
And your granola sounds good too…I love granola, but never think about making it myself….I am sure that yours is much better than store bought!!

Wow – you and Melanie are really productive! I have done some embroidery like hers but it just isn’t my thing. I get lost in the charts and prefer something that I can more easily pick up and put down – like scarves I knit. I have wanted to make some granola this summer using your recipe but it’s been too hot or I’ve been too busy. I hate buying cereal in a box because it’s expensive, but that’s what I’ve been eating lately. Maybe this week if the weather cools off. It’s hard to have the oven on. That pie looks just wonderful – apple season is coming soon here, and I always make at least one. Yum!
