Today’s post is another fabric scrap project using the free mannequin pin cushion pattern from DIY Dish. I am using my beloved Liberty London fabric scraps but this can be done using any fabric scraps you have on hand. This project is a good way to use up your fabric scraps and have a functional and decorative item in your sewing area. Also check out my other fabric scrap projects here.
DIY Dish has a great video on how to sew together the pattern here. I am going to review a few things that differ from the instructional video when I made my pin cushion.
I had these lovely scraps I purchased from Alice Caroline Supply mentioned in my Liberty fabric source guide post. Interesting enough they were all cut offs from hexagons. I wanted to mention this to show that even oddly shaped scraps can be used for this project.
UPDATE 4/2/2015: I’ve have Liberty scrap packs in my Etsy shop so you can buy some lovely scraps to make your own Liberty pin cushion.
I cut up the fabric into squares or triangles where I could and started sewing them together. As I pieced them together I put the pattern over my scrap piece to see if was big enough. After I had enough scrap pieces sewn together I cut out the pattern per the video instructions.
Another modification I made was to add a skirt ruffle to showcase my Liberty Hello Kitty fabric mentioned in an earlier post . I cut roughly a 2 inch high by 17 inch wide strip of fabric and then gathered the strip (great gathering tutorial here). I folded up the bottom of the mannequin hem by 1 inch and sewed the gathered strip to to the bottom. Here is the view of the pattern sewn together on the inside and the outside with the ruffle.
I didn’t have foam board so I traced the foam board pattern on a cereal box and then used a glue gun to glue the fabric to the cereal box base. The instructions called to use mini Christmas ornaments but I couldn’t find any so I used a Darice craft wooden knob I found at Joann Fabric and painted it with a mix of brown and black paint to match the tapered candle holder base I bought from Target.
Finally, my finished mannequin pin cushion. It’s almost too nice to put pins in! Please drop me a comment on your pin cushion creation if you decide to give this a try. Happy sewing.
So cute! And I had no idea that HK Liberty existed… I love it!
Such a great way to showcase your Liberty scraps.

I don’t think this could be any more lovely! What a fantastic use of those teeny tiny bits of precious loveliness. To think they could have ended up in the bin! Thanks for the link to the pattern too. I have a friend whose daughter has just moved out so she finally has a sewing room – I must make her this as a sewing room warming present!

This is such a cute project! What a fun way to use your scraps to create one more project, especially if you used a whole fabric line in something.

She is so sweet! I, too, love that pattern from DIY Dish. Pop over some time and take a look at mine too…. I love the little ruffle you added.
