Z is for Zoo

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

It's the last day of the A to Z Challenge!! Can you believe it?! We've made it all the way from A to Y and now we're adding the last piece of the puzzle. Today is letter Z and Z is for Zoo.

Now...I know what some of you are thinking. Hey lady...you did animals back on Q is for Quack...what are you up to? Well...I have another animal activity and this one combines a few of the toddler ideas that we've been talking about. It's time for a bath...an animal bath!

This is an example of how one activity will morph into another at the whim of your toddler.

We've already established how much this kid loves water. Well...we've also got a love for bubbles and a need to work on some mouth muscles to improve his speech. So...I grabbed a large bowl, filled it part way with water, and added a drop of dish soap. I snagged a few drinking straws from the cupboard and figured we'd do some bubble blowing.

Well...the kid indulged me for about 3 minutes before he simply started splashing in the water. Bubble time was clearly done. But...we'd been playing with his zoo animals earlier in the morning. So, I grabbed the bag and we were off to the races.

He loved dunking them one by one in the slightly soapy water, then lifting a few out, then putting them back in.

The game was so much fun, that even little brother had to join in. (Look! The Baby is making an appearance for the end of A to Z!)

We splashed and scrubbed and soaked and dried animals for nearly an hour. Once again, the simple things never fail to disappoint. We may not have worked on things the way I'd planned, but we still had a dang good time.

Thanks for joining me on my journey from A to Z this year! I'm a little shocked at how quickly the month flew by. I'm incredibly glad I decided to join in again this year and I hope you all found something to enjoy along the way as well.

Y is for Yellow

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

We're getting so close to the end! Today's letter is Y. Y is for YELLOW! And where there's yellow, there's more colors!

Brecken is very much into rote learning right now. He enjoys the alphabet, numbers, and colors a lot. Color play is something we're constantly doing around here, whether we intend to or not. It just kind of shows up in our everyday lives when he gets the urge to start identifying colors.

We started out seriously introducing colors with the simple activity of coloring. I gave him some chunky crayons and a blank piece of paper and we were off. He is still working on hand grasp, but his coloring continues to improve and he loves to identify the colors of his crayons as he goes.

We've also gone for other media to work with color. He has a chalkboard that he loves to use and we have a lot of colored toys like blocks, stacking cups, and cars. We have not yet introduced markers or paint, but those are on the agenda for the next few months. I have our play bins ready to go with washable options since I know how messy these boys can be. Playdoh will also be getting used soon as he got a good selection of colors for his birthday.

We have worked with colors using both video and reading. I do allow screen time around here, but it is primarily utilized for educational videos. We sing songs along with short YouTube videos and watch others that introduce colors in the outside world (Blippi seems to be a house favorite).

We also have a very large selection of books. The current color favorite is Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site: Dump Truck's Colors. It is a cute little board book where the words for colors are printed in the color they represent. By reading this book, we've now discovered that Brecken recognizes and "reads" the words for most colors. Amazing! And it totally plays to his preference for vehicles in his toys and learning (bonus points!).

One of the best color toys we have is one I made from a discarded muffin tin. I glued in color squares to each of the bins. I then colored six blocks to match. The Boy was quickly drawn to dumping out the blocks and lining them back up.

More recently, we've played with the tin using colored pom poms. They are smaller and work more on his dexterity, plus there are more of them to sort. He has a good time moving them around, matching them up, and just squishing them between his fingers.

There are so many options for playing with and learning colors. You can use any kinds of bits and bobs to get them to recognize the colors around them. We talk about the color of socks and shirts while getting dressed, the color of Froot Loops at breakfast, the color of his cup and his bib. We talk about the colors of cars on the way to other places and the colors of vegetables and fruits as we shop in the supermarket. If I don't find the opportunity to introduce color into our learning during the day, he will do it for me. He loves to point something out and say "green" or "blue" in his own little toddler way. It's great to have an inquisitive little guy who keeps me finding games in the every day.

X is for Xylophone

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

We are getting SOOOO close! Today's letter of the day is X. X is for Xylophone. It's really just my shortcut way of getting to talk about musical instruments to keep the toddler a happy kid.

When the Boy was an itty bitty chunky baby, he loved anything that made sound. Toys that played music were his favorites. His love for music has certainly not diminished as he has grown into toddlerhood.

He still loves toys that play music, but he is taking more to liking toys where he can be the music maker. We started off by just giving him a couple of my stainless steel mixing bowls and wooden spoons. He loved to play on those almost more than playing with any other toy for quite a while.

We moved into actual musical instruments rather than kitchenware with the classic xylophone. We have the xylophone bus that has been repaired innumerable times with crazy glue because the kid drags it everywhere and then crashes it off of chairs and sofas and tables. The poor red bar has fallen off so many dang times. In fact, as I type, the bus is sitting on the kitchen counter waiting for surgery to hopefully make a stronger repair on the red bar. But he loves it.

We also have a Hape xylophone with red, blue, and green balls that can get hammered down into the xylophone. The Boy likes this one okay, but it is more of a Baby favorite. He plays with it daily.

In addition to the xylophone, we have branched the Boy out to try other musical instruments. He has a drum that opens to contain his other small instruments. He has a tambourine, an egg shaker, a slide whistle, a plastic recorder whistle, and two different duck calls (we live on a farm). He used to have a kazoo as well, but that one had an unfortunate accident and needs to be replaced.

He loves to try out new things to make any kind of musical sound he can. I broke out my old Casio keyboard and he was enthralled. The $12 it cost me on Amazon to order a new power cord was more than worth it to see the joy on his face. We keep it in the spare bedroom where he naps during the day and he has to go over and push the keys every. single. day. before he'll lay down.

When he was small, my guitar used to sit in our living room. He used to crawl over to it and strum the strings. When he could walk, he would purposefully head for it. The guitar now sits in the spare bedroom with the keyboard, but he got his very own ukelele for his birthday and he thinks that is just fantastic. He still needs to work a little on being gentle with it, but he loves when he can make it produce sound.

A couple of months ago, I stumbled upon the ultimate musical idea. I had an old Rock Band set in the closet that hadn't been hooked up since I was pregnant with the Boy. (I used to love to use the drum set to work out frustrations.) I pulled that out one morning while the boys ate breakfast. The Boy was in absolute heaven! I put the settings on practice mode, turn the speed way down, and let him pound away. He giggles and giggles. It's been a while since we've done this activity. It's probably time to hook it back up for him again. (Besides...I could sometimes use a little drum therapy myself after a full day with the Boy and the Baby.)

Music is a powerful tool. For us, it has often been the key to calming a kid down in a quick instant. Beyond handing them toys that play music, our kids can often be soothed quickly by starting to sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (the Boy) or You Are My Sunshine (the Baby). I started singing these songs to them when they were just newborns and they can still (most of the time) work like a charm. Thank goodness!

W is for Water

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

I mentioned yesterday that the next two days would be activities that are the Boy's favorites. Well...today is W and we are looking at Water!

The Boy is a water fiend! (The Baby is showing indications that he will also have this inclination.) Water is a total attractant for this kid and any activity that includes water is typically an instant win. He has been like this since he was little. He's almost always loved baths and one of the locations we frequently had to retrieve him from as a new crawler was the dogs' water dish. (The water dish is now out of reach thanks to a baby gate, but this doesn't stop him from picking it up and dumping the whole thing out whenever we try to go through the entryway to outside. He can sometimes be a pill.)

He loves to swim and splash, so we had an inflatable pool for him to crawl around and splash in on the enclosed porch last year. Unfortunately, it had a run-in with a nail when we were removing trim pieces from the main room for remodeling and we are now pool-less. Hopefully we can rectify that soon with the nice weather coming around (FINALLY).

As much as we enjoy letting him splash in the pool or go to the lake, those activities don't work out so well when it's freezing and snowing and blowing outside. So...we found ways to bring the water indoors.

If you've been around for my prior A to Z posts this year, you've also seen our other water activities in the posts G is for Go FishI is for Indoor Car Wash, and L is for Letters. Like I said, the Boy is a sucker for anything including water...and I'm a sucker in that I typically oblige.

Water beads were an early hit for our indoor water needs. A simple 4-hour soak in a glass measuring cup and they're ready to go. I initially put them in a well-taped Ziploc bag and let the Boy squish to his heart's content. This worked well for quite a while, but recently bit me in the can when he figured out how to go vicious and tear open the plastic bag. Oh...the horror. Water beads everywhere. I highly recommend using them in a contained area like a play tray.

For his birthday this year, we did a special birthday bath with the beads. I colored the water purple with food dye (no...it didn't stain either the tub or the kid...I used a total of about 10 drops of color between the red and the blue) and dumped in about 4 cups of ready to go water beads. (Note: Crayola also makes water color tabs for the bath. We haven't tried them yet, but others we know have used them with happy results.)

Our special birthday bath resulted in one seriously happy toddler. He had a BLAST! He ran them through his fingers, chased them up and down the tub as he splashed and swam, and scooped them up and dumped them over and over again.

Though the water bead bath proved to be a fun activity, I will admit that it is not one we will be doing frequently. It's a lot of work in the clean up stages. Water beads are not meant for the drain, so I had to carefully open the drain with a colander over the top when we were all one in order to prevent them from going down. I then scooped them all out using a ladle and my hands. It was not a fast process. But...the Boy enjoyed it and I'm a sucker for his entertainment, so we will likely do it again sometime.

Do you have a water fiend like me? What other indoor water activities have you tried?

V is for Vehicles

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

The next two days of toddler activities are probably the Boy's favorites. We're starting with the one that easily takes over the majority of his day. For letter V, we're going with Vehicles!

This boy loves just about anything with wheels. He loves playing with wheels, riding in vehicles, and watching shows with cars/trucks/etc.

He got his cute little Cozy Coupe for his 1st birthday from Nana and Papa. He loved being pushed around in it when he was littler, now he likes climbing in and taking himself for a little drive around the living room. He has also taken to driving his little brother around. They're both pretty entertained by this.

We got him a tricycle for his 2nd birthday. We have not perfected the "riding" it idea yet, but he likes to push it around, be pushed around on it, and especially enjoys hiding things in the trunk.

By and large though, he typically enjoys playing with small vehicular toys. Firetrucks are his number one favorite. He likes to make the noises and push them around. He engages them in imagination play frequently, driving them around the couches and the floor.

We use the lines on the living room rug as a road and drive them around. We review colors and shapes. We use directional words (ladder up, ladder down) and relational words (on the table, under the table). There are a lot of ways for us to include his love for vehicles in learning play.

And then there's just the cutest thing ever. He has started to share his toys and his love for vehicles with the Baby. They play together once in a while and it's almost always giggles and smiles. It just makes my heart want to explode. This is almost always the best part of my day. I love watching these two teach each other and enjoy things together. If we can find toys that bring them together more, I'm all for it!

U is for Unusual Holidays

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

We're in the last full stretch of the challenge and now I'm finding myself in the thick of it. I was prepared ahead of time for a decent chunk of the posts, then it became that I was a few days ahead, now I'm writing posts the day before they go up. Ugh. That is so much more stressful. But...the show must go on.

National Chocolate Cake Day
Today is letter U and this topic is a bit different than the activities we've discussed thus far. U is for Unusual Holidays. I started this activity trend at the beginning of the year and we've been having a pretty good time with it.

A lot of you are likely familiar with "Talk Like a Pirate Day" which occurs annually on September 19th. Well...there is a whole list of fun and quirky holidays like that throughout the year.

National Peppermint Patty Day
I compiled a list that we use to generate our Unusual Holiday plans for each month. I pick and choose what which "holidays" we want to celebrate and write them on the calendar with all of our other appointments and holidays for the month. It keeps things random and interesting. As an added bonus, a lot of them are food based (obviously you may have realized that from the photos), so I'm able to plan some of our monthly dinner menu and get interesting snack ideas.

National Pecan Pie Day
There are other types of holidays (like Drop Everything and Read Day...which was earlier this month...and National Pig Day...which we celebrate from the farm perspective) and we have a good time doing quirky things that we otherwise wouldn't have thought of. It's something that gives me a little prompt and helps us make extraordinary days out of what would have otherwise been rather routine ones.

World Nutella Day

T is for Tape Truck Track

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

Today is the day for letter T...and it's a triple threat (see what I did there?). T is for Tape Truck Track. Yay for alliteration!

The Boy loves cars. Seriously. Things with wheels are his favorite things to play with. When it comes to play, anything that can incorporate this love is usually a pretty good time. So this activity was a pretty solid win.

As I've mentioned in other posts (and you've no doubt seen in the pictures), we have a fairly open floor plan with a good chunk of hardwood real estate to play in on our main floor. I grabbed a roll of painter's tape we had laying around (this particular roll is Frog Tape), and hit the floor.

I taped out a race track wide enough for his biggest vehicles and showed him what to do. He tooled around with different cars and trucks for about three days. Easy entertainment!

When we were done with play, I grabbed the roll and wrapped the tape back up on it. No mess left on the floor, no damage to the hardwood, and we have the tape to use again if I want to pull it back out. If not, we just chuck the tape and buy a new roll next time.

In keeping with the letter of the day...he had a terrific time!

S is for Sensory Learning

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

It's the start of the 4th week of the A to Z Blogging Challenge and we are getting back into things with the letter S. S is for a toddler favorite...Sensory Learning.

There are so many ways to go about sensory learning. It's just about having them feel and experience as many different things as possible. You typically can use just about anything you have on hand.

Well...when you live in northern Minnesota, the thing you have most on hand is often snow. With the temperatures outside often at -20F or lower, playing in the snow outside is not always possible. So...we brought it inside.

After scooping up a bowlful from the front yard, we simply sat it on the floor and let him at it. He smooshed and smashed it to his heart's content. He shook the cold from his hands, he licked a chunk of snow from his hands. It was a blast.

The next time we brought the snow in, we added a component. We drove his vehicles through the bowl, we used his shape blocks to press the snow into shapes he could smash with his hands. Just as with the first time, he was thrilled with the experience.

Never underestimate the power of something simple. Anything they've never felt before can be something to bring a smile. And if it feels interesting, it can entertain over and over. We've talked before about the fun of playing with pasta noodles. Snow was obviously a hit. Dry rice and beans work just as well.

Sensory play is a toddler parent's best friend.

R is for Reading

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

Today is the easiest post for me to write since it's the activity that comes most easily to our family. Today's letter is R and R is for Reading!

Reading with your toddler is an incredibly helpful activity. They learn to pay attention, to interpret context clues from pictures, and they build their vocabulary at a much quicker rate than simply having vocal instruction or learning from video screens.

Around here, we devour books (tee hee). I've always been a heavy reader and it is one of my favorite hobbies, so it was pretty easy for me to move into reading to my kids. I had part of a children's library already, since my mom passed the majority of the books I had as a kid over to me. I stocked it up further primarily with used books. I find most of my used books at library sales, thrift stores, and the online store ThriftBooks.

I started reading to the Boy before bedtime when he was very little. Though we read here and there from the time he was born, we made it a regular routine to read books before bed when he was about 3 months old. For the Baby, we already had our routine established, so he's been indoctrinated practically since birth.

My kids love books. The Baby doesn't always focus clear through a book, but the Boy has gotten to where his attention can typically be held to the end. He also enjoys reading on his own. I keep a small stack of board books on our living room coffee table. He picks them up randomly during the day and flips through at his leisure. Sometimes he will bring them to me or Daddy for a sit down reading, but a lot of times, he just likes to look at them on his own and tell us words out loud (in his own special toddler speak, of course).

I rotate the books every couple of weeks to keep him from getting bored. We've also found that, on the nights where he is terribly upset about going to bed, we can calm him by giving him a book or two in his bed (always board books...he can't be trusted otherwise). We let him read on his own until he goes to sleep and I shut his bedroom light off when I'm done reading at bedtime for myself. It's not ideal, but it's much better than having him scream bloody murder when he isn't ready to go to bed.

What about you and your family? How do books fit in with your routine? What are your favorite children's books?
