Tips For Sewing Success
- Press As You Go: Pressing seams after each step ensures a polished, professional-looking purse.
- Prep Your Fabric: Wash and iron your fabric before starting to prevent shrinkage and ensure clean cuts.
- Measure Twice, Cut Once: Carefully follow the pattern dimensions, ensuring all pieces align perfectly.
- Clip Curves: For smoother seams, clip the curves after sewing but avoid cutting through the stitches.
- Use a Zipper Foot for Piping: When attaching the piping, a zipper foot will help you sew close to the edge for a clean finish.

Tips For Sewing Beginners
- Work Slowly: Take your time, especially when sewing curves, to avoid mistakes and ensure neat stitches.
- Choose Simple Fabrics: Start with cotton or other easy-to-handle materials to make sewing smoother.
- Follow the Pattern Closely: This step-by-step sewing tutorial is beginner-friendly, so trust the instructions to guide you.
- Practice on Scraps: Before working on the actual purse, practice sewing techniques like piping and binding on scrap fabric.
Ideas For Personalization
- Customize the Strap: Swap the fabric strap for a ribbon or braided cord for a chic DIY purse style.
- Add Initials: Use fabric paint or embroidery to add a monogram to the flap or body.
- Decorate with Buttons: Attach decorative buttons in fun shapes or colors for a unique touch.
- Use Patterned Fabrics: Select fabrics with bold patterns or your little one’s favorite prints for extra personality.
Suggestions For Different Fabrics And Embellishments
- Fabric Options: Use denim, canvas, or faux leather for a sturdier purse or cotton for a lightweight feel.
- Add Embellishments: Include lace trims, fabric flowers, or appliques to enhance the design.
- Play with Colors: Combine contrasting or complementary colors for a fun and eye-catching look.
- Seasonal Themes: Choose holiday-themed fabrics or embellishments for a festive version of the purse.
Accessories to Elevate Your Little Girl’s Purse
- Take your purse project to the next level with some fun and creative accessories! Adding embellishments not only personalizes the purse but also makes it extra special for your little one. Here are a few ideas:
- Monogram Embroidery: Personalize the purse by embroidering a monogram on the flap or body. Check out monogram ideas from Flamingo Toes for inspiration.
- Pom-Poms: Add colorful pom-poms to the edges or strap for a playful touch.
- Keychains: Attach a cute keychain, like the adorable options from The Handmade Home to the strap or zipper.
- Lip Gloss Holder: Include a practical yet stylish lip gloss holder, such as those from Crazy Little Projects, to make it functional and fun.

FAQ
A girl’s purse can hold essentials tailored to her age and needs. For younger girls, consider items like lip balm, a small notebook and pen, hair accessories, snacks, and tissues for everyday convenience and fun. Older girls might include a phone or emergency contact list, a wallet with change or a bus pass, a compact mirror, a mini first aid kit, and stylish accessories like sunglasses or keychains. These thoughtful additions make a purse both practical and personal.
The age at which girls start carrying purses varies based on individual preference, cultural norms, and parental guidance. Ultimately, the decision depends on the child’s interest and readiness to manage their belongings responsibly. Generally:
Young Children (3-6 years): Many girls enjoy carrying small play purses at this age, often as part of imaginative play or to hold small toys and snacks.
Elementary Age (7-10 years): Girls may start carrying small purses or bags to bring personal items like lip balm, tissues, or a notebook. This is often encouraged as they gain more independence.
Preteens and Teens (11+ years): At this age, carrying a purse becomes more practical. They might use it for school, outings, or holding items like a phone, wallet, or hygiene products.

This is so cute, my daughters would love these! Thank you for sharing the free pattern.
Thank you so much! I came here to see your crochet cowl and found this pattern as well. My daughter is only 8 months old right now, but my 5 year old son is always snagging my purses. He is at his “I want anything I think is pretty – who cares if it is supposed to be for a girl” stage. I can let him pick the fabric and anything he wants to personalize it and he can have his own purse. I am a little tired of finding Hot Wheels in all my purses. I will be pinning this to my Pinterest immediately. Thank you again!
I’m so glad you found it! You’ll have to come back soon, I’m working on a pattern for a ‘boy purse”, my little guy loves them too! Thanks for stopping by!
This purse is absolutely delightful! I made one this morning for my daughter to give at a birthday party this afternoon. The recipient loved it (and so did her mom!). Couple of notes from my experience–I found that the purse bottom piece was not quite long enough for me. I was using a beautiful wool felt and it doesn’t have the kind of stretch that acrylic felt does, so that could have been it. But also the 19″ of piping wasn’t quite enough either, so maybe it had to do with the way I cut or sewed the purse body pieces. Wrong seam allowance maybe? I had a little bit of trouble with the strap covers but I ended up figuring it out. A few more photos there might help! Lastly, I’m wondering what your sales policy is–do you allow people to sell finished products made from your patterns? Because seriously this is the cutest purse I have ever made–and I have two girls and have made my share of purses! Of course now that the birthday party is over, my girls have picked fabric from the stash to make their own!
Hi Lisa, Thanks so much for the feedback! I did have someone test the pattern and they didn’t find the shortage, but maybe I’ll add a little allowance. Feel free to use the pattern, just give credit where credit is due. Thanks again for coming back to comment. I hope to make more patterns like this one!
I’m so glad I read this! As a beginner I thought I had done something wrong because I found the bottom too short too. Same with the piping (that I had to make for the first time also). I have increased both the bottom and the piping by 1″ and hopefully that sorts it out.
I found the handle covers really confusing and that’s what brought me undone. It was intended for a gift but instead I gave it to my Miss 1 and she LOVED it… I will try again today with a longer base and piping and hopefully it will be gift worthy 🙂
I’m so sorry it didn ‘t work out on round 1. Best wishes for a better one on round 2
I just finished making this up. It was my first time ever sewing something (besides heming) I had a few minor issues (probably from being so new to sewing) overall it looks great! just in time for my daughters birthday. i know if i make another it will definitely be a lot easier. Thank you so much for making this a free pattern!
Thanks for stopping back to share Hollie, I’m so glad you gave it a try! I hope your little girl loves it!
Thank you Virginia for sharing the purse project. I’m new to your site and have shared this project on facebook for all my friends to see.
Thanks Kim!
This is super cute. I didn’t have any piping but I improvised with what I did have and made my little girl a little purse for Christmas.
Really cute! I pinned it!
Love, love the pattern! I had just crocheted a ruffled purse for my niece’s birthday but when I saw this I just had to make this too. Just a few suggestions, on the pattern pieces where it says “cut on fold”, this should read “put on fold”. I too had to make adjustments to get the 19 inch piece of piping to fit..needs a little more wiggle room. Instead of using felt I ironed fabric interfacing of medium weight to the back of the outside fabric and lined the purse in a coordinating print. I also made piping out of the lining print as well as used it in place of the bias tape and used this for the strap cover and flap closure. It turned out so cute! Now will have to make one for my other niece. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
Thanks for all the suggestions Pat! You know when you make something over and over again, sharing it with others sometime the details get lost without intention. So glad you liked it!
Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you so much for the pattern. It is adorable, can’t wait to sew it up for my Grandaughter.
Hi, thank you for sharing this pattern! I have everything cut out to make this purse and was just wondering what the seam allowance should be? Thanks!
