Three pieces of double sided satin ribbon were joined with a featherstitch. It was a challenge for me to get the featherstitches even. I am used to working on linen, not silk.
Susie Gay was an excellent teacher. There were about 15 people in the class, at all different stitching levels, and she managed to keep us stitching. I got about 75% of the piece done in a 6 hour class.
The beaded ends of the ribbon ties were hard for me. I redid the first one 3 times before I got it done to my satisfaction.
Here is what the piece looks like on the inside. The inner layer is wool felt. The pocket at the end closes with an antique button. It holds a beeswax strawberry.
Here is a close up of my beaded grapes. I had the same spacing issue with the Antwerp stitch edging that I did with the featherstitch: no threads to count to keep the spacing even.
I did ribbon embroidery for the first time on this piece. It was fun! I'd like to do more ribbon embroidery. I signed up for a class last spring, but it was cancelled due to lack of interest. I hope my guild will offer more surface stitching classes as I really need the practice.
This project was published in Creative Needle, August 2008. I'm linking up with Sarah and Amanda Jean.

This is beautiful. I have always admired silk ribbon embroidery.
Hi! Just followed your blog! Come follow us back! Thanks.
Absolutely beautiful! (Kathy Shaw's free on-line Basic Crazy Quilting Course includes some silk ribbon embroidery instructions. There is a tab about her classes on her blog at Shawkl Designs.)
Your piece is gorgeous, you should be very proud of it!!
That is so pretty. Practice makes perfect and I think your stitching looks pretty good.
THat is so pretty - you can be very proud of your great effort!
Very pretty, and your featherstiches look even to me. I know what you mean though, I have made a few thinks this year with featherstitch and it is tricky to get them even., and you have done such a great job on your beading too. Well done!

Such a beautiful piece!
So pretty, love the beaded grapes.
Your Silk Ribbon Roll-up turned out lovely. I think we always see the flaws in our own work much more than others do. I think you've done a great job on it.
Thanks so much for linking up to this week's Stitchery Link Party.
This is really lovely and your stitching is great, this is a wonderful first class project.
Your embroidery is very pretty and that piece is fabulous.
