Wednesday Hodgpodge

Obviously I had nothing to say yesterday as I didn't post.  I'm trying to not feel pressure if I don't happen to post on any given day.  As my youngest as said . . . "You shouldn't post just for the sake of posting." In other words ~ if you've nothing interesting to say, don't bother.  Ha.  Well, I can't say that anything I have to say is interesting anyway but still . . . Sometimes I forget that the whole impetus (good word, eh?) of this whole blog thing was simply a daily journal.  Life goes on and I forget what just happened!  I want to be able to flip through the previous year and recall things and remember just how blessed this life of mine is.

Anyway . . . on with Joyce's Hodgepodge (who by the way never has a problem being interesting)  Hi Joyce!

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English...here's the list for 2013-

fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (an acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why. Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.

I'm going to go with YOLO.  Who's to say, you only live once?  Ha.  Honestly it's just a crutch fad slang for excusing doing something dumb that I one wouldn't necessarily approve of recommend.  That or ~ "it's a once in a life time opportunity" is a dumb one too another one of my least favorites. I believe you have to be at least middle age until you can honestly say that one.  I mean, if you're only 20 something, how the heck do you know it's going to come around only that once?  Sheesh.
Um, kind of went off on a tangent on that one. Ha. You'd think I hear it often or something...

2.  When was the last time you rode a train?  Where did you go?
Oh gosh, I think the last time was when we were in Europe the summer of '96.  We went by train from Paris through Switzerland to Rome ~ an overnight ride that did nothing for my tendency to have motion sickness.  Ugh.

3. Bagels-yay or nay?  Favorite 'flavor'?  Favorite topping?
Yay for sure.  I prefer a plain bagel toasted with cream cheese but if I can't have it toasted then I'll go for the cinnamon raisin sans topping.

4.  'Tis the season of awards shows...if you could star in a movie already made which one would you choose?
Hmm.  Something with amazing costumes.  Like Pride and Prejudice or Gone with the Wind or something like that.  It's all about the clothes for me.

5. The move towards single gender classrooms has been making the news in recent months....what say you?  Do you think kids perform better if separated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination?  If you're a parent, is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?
Weelllll.  Let me just say this about that.   I'm not sure that single gender classrooms for all years makes sense.  I mean at some point a child must learn how to interact with the opposite sex.  Maybe in a perfect world there were single gender classrooms but co-ed campuses.  Yeah, that would be good. However, if given the choice, I'd pick an all girls high school every. single. time.

Miss Katherine-A. attended an all girls high school.  She had an amazing experience and we were beyond impressed with the education. We are of the belief that students, girls especially,  preform, learn, interact and thrive so much more productively if they are not so concerned with how Tom, Dick or Harry are looking at them.

So in short, Yes absolutely I would promote single gender high schools.  With uniforms.  Ha.

6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?
Well, for Pete's sake what's not to like?  Ha.  If I had to pick a favorite thing though, of course it would have to be the maid service every day.  duh.  Although that one thing could be improved if you could make an appointment for it.  That way you would know what time they were going to be there rather than putting out the "Privacy Please" sign so they don't knock too early and hoping they don't come before you take it off so they aren't then forced to come back too late in the day or you miss it all together.  See.  It's a 'problem.'   Ha.

This was my last hotel stay . . . The Fairmont ~ Room 528 if you happen to be in Seattle in the near future.  It's a good one.

7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013?  What's the story behind your choice?
 Not technically no.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
I'm taking off in the morning for a 10 hour jaunt down I 5 to gather Miss Katherine-A and all her worldly belongings and bring it all where she should be home.  Weather and roads look good for the trip so I'm looking forward to some girlfriend time with BF Sue, who is going above and beyond the call of friendship to make the drive with me.

She'll even pump gas!

I must admit, that hotel sure does look pretty snazzy...and CLEAN! Definitely a plus, in my book! Have fun on your little trip! Hope it's more pleasure than work!

What a friend to go with you and pump the gas. She's a keeper! :)

The best thing about living in NJ is you are not allowed to pump your own gas.

I knew we would be like-minded on the hotel thing : )

Safe travels!
