HODGEPODGE
Joyce's hodgepodge questions for this week are as follows, along with my answers...
1. It's a brand new month...share one thing you're looking forward to in October. AS YOU ALL KNOW....HALLOWEEN!!!
2. Is chivalry dead? Explain. That is a medieval term for the Middle Ages!!! Chivalry in itself, at least I think, is still around but with a whole 'nother concept for our society. We have no knights, ladies in waiting, etc. etc. today, but as for chivalry...I think it's all about your own upbringing...wanting to do the right thing!! From the boldness and undying devotion and loyalty of hundreds of years ago, chivalry today is — a choice. The choice to do the right things, for the right reasons, at the right times. Things have changed, I see, just from my generation to my kids' generation and my grandkids' generation....all part of our society and perhaps faulted by our ways and thoughts of equality in men and women. Women's Liberation comes to mind...we want to be equal to men, yet we like having a pampering spouse. Isn't that double standards? Personally, I think chivalry is quite dormant...not necessarily 'dead'....depends on where you are living...and it could even boil down to your own neighborhood and family style.
3. On October 2, 1950 the Peanuts comic strip made its debut. Which character is your favorite? Which character is most like you? I'm one of the oddities that really think Peanuts is overrated. When Peanuts is televised and not published in papers, the music in the program is bad enough to curdle my blood!! I could never associate myself with the 'poor me' attitude of Charlie Brown or Shroeder - their blazé chattering and gloomy outlook 90% of the time. Now I would probably have to say that Snoopy is the best...I like his Piloting and Ace Bombing Adventures with his red cape and flight goggles; his 'it was a dark and stormy night' adventures. As for which one is most like me....LUCY...I was born with crabby genes too.
4. What's something you're competitive about? Nuttin' Honey!! At my age, I don't compete, games, board games, card games, etc. They're just games!!! Yet, considering which of the two of us [Bud and myself] has more aches and pains to talk about could turn 'competitive'. LOL
5. October is National Popcorn Popping Month...are you a fan? How do you like your popcorn? Gotta love me some popcorn!!! Heavily Buttered Too...with a side dish of Junior Mints!!!
6. When did you first realize the world is small? I know I've said it's a small world many-a-time, but in all reality, I don't think the world is small...it's huge and so much to see that I'll need a dozen or more lifetimes.
7. In terms of architecture, what's the most beautiful building you've seen up close and in person? I love historical buildings! Whether they be in ruins or still 'whole'...My utmost favorite architecture is Southern....as in Plantations. The style, the pristine beauty of the white columns, the sometimes red brick, the wrap-around verandas, the balconies. Anything plantation. Oh and speaking of 'ruins'....I love all the California and Texas Missions and ones I've seen in Southern Arizona also!!! But the one building that literally made me fall to my knees was the very first time I saw and then set foot in was America's National Cathedral in Washington D.C. I was in awe of the size, the height of the towering spires, the striking color against the blue sky--and then, going inside - the rich beauty of the wood, the altar, the stained glass windows!! There is nothing in the United States that can surpass this building if you want my opinion. It's the epitome of 'PILLARS OF THE EARTH'

8. Insert your own random thought here. I'm lovin' the weather here the last few days. It's been perfect. 60 night time temps and high 70s low to mid 80s!!! The skies are clear...the moon is bright...a splendorous first October week of 2012!!!
Nice shot! I like vultures!
ReplyDelete...you do like them? Really? Okay, I guess we all have likes and dislikes, I'm thinking strongly on the 'dislike' side for me tho.
DeleteIt's a bird I don't have over here... lovely image.
ReplyDelete...they're seen everywhere here.
DeleteHalloween is YOUR holiday, I guess! Love the beautiful cathedral picture. Did you take it? Wonderful clouds! :-)
ReplyDeleteYep, I 'live' for Halloween!!

ReplyDeleteyep, from google images....too lazy and too busy to get the scanner fired up and scan some pics.
DeleteThat photo made him scary looking!
ReplyDelete...they're ugly, that I know
DeleteI would love to see the National Cathedral, I have read that it is awe inspiring.

Deletei really like vultures although i mainly see turkey vultures. this is a beautiful image, showing off his pretty feather pattern!!
ReplyDeletei so agree with #8!! bye, bye summer, you will not be missed!!
...it definitely WAS a long hot summer.
DeleteYep, that vulture surely fits the Halloween theme.
ReplyDeleteEverything 'weenish for me this month. LOL
DeleteI am not posting birds tomorrow...just overwhelmed...but my bird would have been the 3 turkey vultures that were on the road in front of me on Sunday...so you have it covered! Interesting thoughts...still will have WW though!
ReplyDelete...it's your decision...we have to live with it.
DeleteYour bird photo definitely looks creepy!
ReplyDelete...they ARE. In my opinion.
DeleteThat's one bird I can't, for the life of me, find anything pretty about!
ReplyDelete...yep, I agree.
DeleteThe bird and the cathedral photos are awesome!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Water World Wednesday
Kim,USA
...thanks Kim
DeleteVultures get a bad rap and yes their faces aren't anything to look at but they have a job to do and they do it pretty well. Love to watch them soaring overhead but always wonder what's below. :)
ReplyDeleteLoved your Hodgepodge answers. Sometimes the world seems small;but Disney got that wrong. We all know that's far from the truth. Oh, I can't wait for the Charlie Brown and the gang in The Great Pumpkin. :)
Hope you've had a great day Anni!
...yep...Disney got it wrong. LOL
DeleteGreat photo of the bird and very nicely shown for halloween.
ReplyDelete...thanks Mick
DeleteChivalry is dead with the younger generation!
ReplyDeleteLove the vulture capture, Anni!
...you got that right Veronica.
DeleteBeautiful picture you show :)
ReplyDeleteHanne Bente
...thanks Hanne.
Deletethe world gets small the minute we grow up... nice little birdie that!
ReplyDeleteyep....truly
DeleteI quite like to see vultures Anni. They do a vital job in cleaning up. Pity us humans don't clean up the earth after ourselves.
ReplyDelete...you got that right. Why just the other day at the store's parking lot, the garbage was atrocious.
DeleteWonderful shot of a scary bird :)
ReplyDelete...thanks Lina
DeleteThey are not good looking birds really are they! A face only a mother could love!
ReplyDeleteStewart M - WBW - Australia
...exactly
DeleteWonderful photographs, view of the bird is unusual. I am greeting
ReplyDelete...it's an ugly one to be sure.
DeleteI agree with you that the world is really not that small.
ReplyDelete...yep, that makes two of us.
DeleteHi, just discovered your blog - because you were a winner of a cute book on another blog. Just thought I would mention - The National Cathedral is magnificent ... and my daughter just bought a condo this summer that is right across the street from this building. When I say right across the street, she opens her bedroom and living room windows to view exactly the picture you showed - the front of the beautiful building. It is just amazing. When she moved in the end of June, I helped her and took pictures and blogged about it.
ReplyDelete...glad you stopped by to introduce yourself. It's always nice to have new visitors.
DeleteSo glad that you're getting some nice weather! Enjoy it! ;-)
ReplyDelete...finally!!!
DeleteWhen we first moved here we had Turkey Vultures land in our front yard! The kids were so fascinated and I thought about how they weren't so bad looking and scary up close. The National Cathedral is beautiful! Thanks for sharing that photo. I hope you have a beautiful day and I enjoyed visiting your Hodgepodge:)
ReplyDelete...vultures in the front yard...not sure I'd like that at all.
DeleteIt is a small world after all however mu bucket list is huge. There are so many places I want to see.
ReplyDeleteso many places, so little time.
Deletewonderful! :)
ReplyDeleteDropping by from Water World Wednesday…Lanikai Resort
...thanks January
DeleteI like mine with a side of raisinets : )
ReplyDeleteVultures I have seen! We live in the woods and there is much 'circle of life' happening in these parts : )
I love raisinets too!!!
DeleteA very appropriate bird for a Halloween shot Anni!
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen.
DeleteGot you Halloween on? Thanks for the button, wondered about that.
ReplyDeleteYou and I have similar answers, especially the architecture....Gotta love those old houses, built to last.
Mama Bear
Oh yes....you know me. I'm the 'queen of 'ween'!!
DeleteThis is my first visit to your delightful blog! (I follow Terra) I enjoyed reading your most recent posts. I enjoy the various perspectives shared by writers who start out bios with words like "retired" followed by a list of the various roles they have or are filling in their lives. I know I am going to be exposed to comments and observations that come from a perspective that is the result of "years" of "cooking on the back burner!" Rightly or wrongly I call that "experience with life!" Take this post. I agree with your comments about chivalry, I first realized that the world was at least accessible to me the first time I returned from an International trip (in my 40's) and realized I could survive such a trip and that people are not so different after all. I enjoy popcorn but wish it could taste like it did when my dad made it in an old saucepan on the stove...but I am not willing to go to the trouble. I have read Peanuts thru the ages and what I identify most with is the display of various temperaments that I encounter in my own life...crabby, to impatient, to melancholy, to optimistic, to naive. Speaking of birds...our most prodigious species seems to be crows. They are taking over the world...and could be considered an October bird! Enjoyed the post and I will be back!
ReplyDelete...nice of you to stop by and introduce yourself Patricia!!! Welcome.
DeleteThe bird shot definitely has a Halloween feel to it, dark bird can't really see its eyes...
ReplyDeleteI too love Southern Plantation houses. The size, big enough for the whole family. Those long porches and the columns all beautiful. A perfect place to sit with a glass of sweet tea while watching the children play in the front yard.
The National Cathedral looks like an amazing place to see.
...the Cathedral is truly something to not miss if you're ever in the D. C. area.
DeleteI've been to Washington D.C. several times. How in the world did I ever miss the National Cathedral? Well...guess that gives me a good reason to go back!
ReplyDelete...yes, next time, don't miss it.
DeleteLovely photo and I do like your Halloween look! I have noticed that Halloween is becoming more and more popular in South Africa. When I was a little girl, we NEVER celebrated Halloween. I've hosted a Halloween Party and my house and everyone dressed up. We had such fun. Battled to find the correct pumpkins though, but we did carve some and they were ok! I guess because it's spring here, makes it more difficult. Seems to suit the fall weather better! It's been VERY hot here for the past 2 days - I think we're in for a stifling summer!
ReplyDelete...we just exited our long hot summer season. Don't suffer in the heat too much now.
DeleteWhile that is an awesome shot of the vulture, I must admit they are darn ugly.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is a huge Snoopy fan. Whenever she buys a card for someone it has to have Snoopy on it.
indeed....VERY ugly.
DeleteYou popcorn scene is at the movies! If I sit next to you can we share the Jr. Mints?? :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Cathedral, I haven't been, but I thin some of the most beautiful architecture is in churches.
...sorry, Anni don't share her Jr. Mints....but I'll gladly buy a box for your very own. 'kay?
DeletePopcorn and jr.mints :)
ReplyDelete...great combination, isn't it?
DeleteVultures always give me the heebie jeebies! lol I think I'm going to call them "Halloween birds" from now on too! hehe
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with what you said about chivalry. In this day and age it's not like it use to be in the old days but has adjusted to today's social style. Every once in a while, though, I come upon a man who was brought up the old fashioned way and won't let me open the door for him, he insists on opening it for ME! lol
Popcorn with tons of butter and Jr. Mints...you're my type of gal!!!!!
Love that cathedral, it's breathtaking!! xoxo
...they are creepy to be sure.
Deletethat bird is still great. Do you want to see my waters?
ReplyDeletethen follow the link.
I have some memes too if you are interested.
nfmemes.blogspot.com
I did follow the link, and the photos took my breath away.
DeleteOh! I've never seen a real live vulture before! What a thrill - even if they're not cute, fluffy or colourful! Happy Halloween - even though it's not widely celebrated downunder in OZ!!
ReplyDelete...well then, glad you stopped by...at least to view in photo. Trust me, seeing one in 'real time' can't be all too thrilling.
DeleteInteresting to see a vulture!
ReplyDeleteGreetings Pia
...thanks Pia
DeleteYou're always a hoot, but today this is a bit creepy! :-)
ReplyDeleteThey are great clean up crews, though.
And I am ADDICTED to popcorn!
Cheers from Cottage Country!
I'm not quite 'addicted' but if you place a bowl [or bag at the movies] in front of me....I'll eat it all if you let me.
DeleteEnjoyed your post for Hodgepodge - but have not one ounce of liking for anything halloween - usually can't wait until it is over. It used to be a fun event when I was a kid, but it has increased in creepiness over the years. Oh, my grands go out and do stuff and I say the obligatory remarks about their costumes, but I sure don't feel it.
ReplyDeleteLoved that beautiful building!!
...that's too bad, I like the 'creepy'. LOL
Deletethe building is truly magnification. I will have to go there one day because D.C is only 3 hours away from us.
ReplyDelete...only 3 hours away? I'd be there mighty often if I were living that close.
Delete
