DIY POPSICLE MOLDS + CREAMY COFFEE POPS

So our little E finally turned 2 this weekend! :D I might have mentioned this before, but our family isn't really big on "parties." We definitely treat birthdays as a special day - there's always cake, tons of pictures taken, a special meal out, but mainly just lots of family time. :)

Because E's a HUGE fan of Elmo and crazy about strawberries and helium balloons, that's what I centered the decor around. I'm still in the process of getting pictures together, but hopefully I'll get the post ready soon.  In the meantime I wanted to share with you this neat idea for making popsicles!

I've been searching and searching for good popsicle molds for the longest time and have yet to find a set I really liked. This Tovolo Star Ice Pop Mold seemed decent but the portion size was a little too big for me. Over the weekend I decided to look around my kitchen to see if I could re-purpose something to use as molds.

I needed something not too large, but not too small - not too wide, but not too narrow either - it had to be freezer proof and preferably BPA free - and made in the US would've been a nice bonus.

And then it came to me - my SNAPPIES! I got these from the hospital when E was born and I had used them to store his formula powder whenever we'd go out. They were the perfect size and fit every single qualification!

To my future guests, don't worry... these containers have only held formula. ;)

With the help of some foil and cookie pop sticks that I had bought for these no-bake cake pops,  my homemade molds turned out to be a success! I filled them with freshly brewed coffee that I made in our awesome Hario coffee dripper (which by the way I just noticed is now on sale on Amazon! o.O - I have it listed on my right sidebar), sweetened with a few tablespoons of honey and heavy cream.

I just had one today and they turned out great! I can't wait to try out other yummy fillings! :D Sweet mung bean, watermelon puree, jasmine tea... hehe I forsee more ice pop recipes showing up in future posts... ;)

Are any of you into making homemade ice pops? What molds do you use? What are your favorite things to fill them with??

Until next time!

  2. lovely timing! I just made frozen pops for the first time in my (adult) life last night. I used yogurt, watermelon juice (the liquid left over in the bottom of the serving container) and a dollop of honey. nom nom (coffee sounds heavenly too!). Uh since we don't have kiddos I just stuck with the dollar store pop molds :-)
