Today's Apocalypse Sign: A-Z Roundup And Reflection
Well, another A-Z Challenge has come and gone. Isn't it amazing how fast April goes when you have an alphabet-crazed tiger chasing your ass for a whole month and only rests for 4 days?? Wow!
Reflecting back on the 2012 Challenge actually goes back to the end of the 2011 Challenge for me.
2011 was my first challenge. I had only been blogging for 14 months prior to that. My ramblings prior to the challenge (by the way, Alex, I owe it all to you for getting me interested in this) were followed by a few souls who took pity on a noobie and said enough kind things to make me feel good. I gathered 42 new followers during that Challenge that put me at 99 on the end of the 30th of April. I gained 22 new followers the first day as Alex featured my blog (since it started with A) and 186 page visits. I learned that when Alex mentions you at the beginning of the challenge people flock (hey, they're not worn out yet!) so he was instrumental in making my first challenge a success.
2012 Challenge was all up to me. Although Alex did give me a shout out midway through the challenge. Then my damn blog hit counter blew out and I am so pissed because I am sure I crossed the 10,000 hit mark and have nothing to show for it. Those bastards at website-hit-counter.com! So I have no idea where I am on page views.
Okay, back on track. So last year I was in a frenzy all month. I didn't know about scheduling posts, pre-posting or any of that. I would spend each day frantically thinking at work what to post for that day's letter...then I would rush home like a junkie needing a fix and cobble together the most coherent post I could. It was as random and spontaneous as it gets.
Soooo...I decided in all my blogging wisdom that I was going to have all my posts done ahead of time and then sit back and read comments and spend time visiting other bloggers. Ha! What a joke. I procrastinated until the LAST WEEK OF MARCH, then I whipped up the first 6 or 7 posts and felt so proud. I would suddenly start a new post as a subject popped into my mind for a given letter. Once the Challenge started I had 4 or 5 half-done posts scattered all over the alphabet and did bits and pieces on each one off and on. Always trying to stay at least 3 or 4 days ahead. The A-Z tsunami almost took me out at W and Y...but last minute inspiration saved the day(s). Damn, I'm worn out again just writing about it!
I had no chance to keep up a "five new blogs a day" reading habit. The very first day I went to the blog below mine, no post. The next one down...haven't posted in 2 months. A couple over from mine...variation on the same theme. That was wasted time. Then I started looking for blogs that sounded interesting, got some more of the above and posts I was not interested in. Time for a new plan. First day all I read were the blogs I had been following for a while, Challenge participant or not.
Day twos plan was brilliant in my own mind. I started paying back those who commented on my posts! I was assured they were currently in the Challenge and they at least took the time to leave some encouraging words. So that was my new plan: visit those sites that visited me and left a comment. Then I got even more brilliant (is this really possible??) and I started visiting sites I found on those sites of people who visited me! This worked for me. Was I going to get to visit all 1.2 million sites signed up for the A-Z? No. Was I going to be sane after the Challenge? Jury is still out. Was I going to be productive and establish some lasting bonds? I hoped so.
I learned when it came down to it, I could push myself to do something I had committed to versus having to decide to post. As you can tell by the last week, I took a break in posting. But during the Challenge, I would let my dogs go hours without peeing to get a post finished. Crazy, right?
I learned that there are some fantastic (a word I overused in commenting lately but I always meant it) writers out there and some who aspire to be even better. The draft writing, and the detail that you put into your efforts is to be commended. But you are driven. Some of you post your word count or percentage of progress of your latest work. I even picked up a couple free books (and not so free) from Amazon from authors in the Challenge. And bought a Kindle Fire to load them on so when I go to Belize next month...I will be reading them.
I learned that the creativity of the blogosphere is boundless.
Clay Baboons??? Weird name, hilarious site. Stephanie's clay figures and the stories just made my day. I will be a continued follower.
Clarissa and her 26 days of death...wha-what?? After the first one I could not wait for the next day. Well, that intrigued me enough to read further works of hers. And I think you should continue the death thing as like a weekly installment (just not Sundays or no one will read my graphs post).
Sarah Allen, self described "uberdork". Her stuff was great in April.
Shannon, those wild wild west posts could not be put down, even though they were some of the longest reads in the Challenge, I had to finish each one.
Melissa, my attorney (just kidding) but she totally would be if I stole a gator in Kenner. She took me to task for my post on Jury Duty. And I have loved her site ever since! Now I have a place to learn the law...even if most of it only applies in Louisiana.
Jess, thanks again for the new music you pointed me to just by having a gadget on your sidebar I could click on and listen to. Your flash fiction was pretty impressive...you have knowledge beyond your years.
Sue H...what a spellbinding story you told 100 words at a time. Then I read the whole thing at the end and want to see a bigger version.
Hilary and her castles. I think I could spend a year in her world just visiting all those places. Majestic and royal, current or ruins, they were all impressive.
Chiz was too wacky and so imaginative that I swear he was posting while on LSD. Am I wrong?
Stephen the science man covered subjects that I enjoyed with rapt attention when I was in school.
Nancy and her love of Alice in Chains...seriously, I had envisioned that post getting like one comment...from Alex! You go Nancy, I love your writing posts a lot. They were informative and thought provoking.
And Alex, I like Kate too...just so you know ;)
I could go on but even then I would leave someone out. Suffice it to say it was an education, a thrill ride, a fantasy, and a musical romp all rolled into one.
I don't know if this even does justice (as a reflection) to the A-Z experience. I feel part of a club or a community (like Eureka) or some other "bonding by a common cause" type thing. I know the vast majority of people I interact with, follow, or am followed by are established or budding writers. That is not what I do as a daily hobby, sport, or job. I enjoy putting things out there that are in my head, unstructured and random as they may be. I may one day write something beyond this blog that someone may find interesting. But it would be on my terms...I would never change Skylar's name...
Congratulations to all my fellow bloggers who finished this Challenge...on to #3! I think I'll start now...

Oh man, Chuck, thank you for that!! I've listed your blog on my blog roll so I NEVER forget to drop by and visit. You are a real find, a great friend, and that's rare. I love that we've bonded over AIC. I still listen to them everyday, as does my 17 year old son. He plays their music on his bass and guitar, but won't let me post the videos I've taken on Facebook. As for Skylar's name, well, he will always be Sky to me, dreamy and dreadfully flawed all at the same time. And since I'm writing a sequel, he and I get to spend some more quality time together.
As for the challenge itself, I did manage to post most everything way in advance so that helped, but I probably visited over 50 blogs a day and was cross-eyed at the end of each day. I enjoyed it, but I'm glad it's over. And I'm so happy I got to meet you. Thanks, Alex, for bringing us together!!
Chuck - first of all, thanks for the shout-out in your reflections post! I was greatly impressed by you constantly returning and commenting on my story's progress - even more so when I read about your action plan for getting round as many blogs as you could!
I, too, found it hard to keep up with the mammoth task of reading and commenting on all the A-Z participants' blogs (the notion of baling out the Titanic with a thimble springs to mind ;-p)
Like you, I often took to returning the 'favour' and spring-boarding to other blogs that way.
Also like you, I found that there were blogs that had been abandoned/neglected; blogs about things that were bizarre to the point of defying logic; also the real 'gems' that I latched onto and will return to over the coming weeks.
But, I really enjoyed logging in and seeing the A-Z posts of my regular blogging friends in the blog-roll. ;-)
We met last year through A-Z 2011, Chuck - what a ride, what a ride!
Looking forward to keeping up with you throughout the rest of 2012 - and unless the Mayan's HAVE got it right, we'll no doubt be jousting posts for A-Z 2013! ;-)
Eureka! Now that is a good analogy. (And really dig that show.) Glad you had fun even if it was frantic sometimes. And check the stats in your dashboard - that will give you an idea of pageviews for the month and all time.
We rocked the world this year!
Alex just has that power doesn't he?
Now that's what I call a reflection. I can't believe you've managed to complete this challenge twice. Well, I suppose I'll know what I'm getting myself into next time around. So I'll give myself plenty of time.
And thanks for the shout out (even though you may have given away my secret).
I kind of have to see Clarissa and her days of death. Do you mind sending me the link?
Thanks for the shout-out! And my name isn't weird. It's just depressingly uncreative, because my first ever blog post featured a clay baboon, and I didn't know what else to call the blog.
I've enjoyed reading your blog, so I'm glad you found me. Or I found you. Or whatever ended up actually happening. I had the same problem with blogs not updating, so I did the same as you...mostly returned comments, and tried to hit some new ones on the list every now and then and hope for the best.
Some of the blogs that you mentioned sound really good...but you didn't link to them! Not that I'm trying to make more work for you or anything...but I'd love the link to 26 days of death. Colour me intrigued.
Thanks for mentioning my blog. I'm glad I creeped you out. Not sure that was my intention. I actually struggled with the idea of writing death posts because I didn't want to depress people or become too morbid. I also visited a lot of new bloggers and enjoyed the challenge a lot.
It's amazing how quickly April passes when we're doing the A to Z. It is a learning experience isn't it. Great job of making it to the finish line.

An A to Z Co-host blog
Hi Chuck .. thanks so much for the shout out - and now we've reconnected we'll be regulars about town.
It's finding that balance - it sort of filters itself out - and you're so right about linking out from others' blogs - great way of connecting.
Many thanks .. and if you want to go to their blogs - click their names and you'll find a way through!
Well done Chuck and you've highlighted some I know .. some I don't .. cheers for now - Hilary
Nancy: I thank you for listing my blog on your roll. I have to get one of those setup on my site. I am really glad you came by during the challenge as it led me back to your site which I enjoyed every day. The A-Z was a good time and I too am glad we met and that it's over for now!
Sue: I love the Titanic reference...that pretty much describes it. I am looking forward to many more stories from you!
Alex: Thanks for the reminder on the stats tab...I guess I really did lose my mind! The challenge was a great success this year and now we are on to 2013! Given the whole 2012 thing doesn't put a damper on that.
Baygirl: Word.
Chiz: First of all, no you won't (trust me) and second...your post today confirms my suspicions. Great challenge dude!
Johanna: The link is in the mail.
Stephanie: Your link is in the mail.
Clarissa: What can I say...I honestly could not wait for the next day to come so I could read the next "death" and solve the last one. Super original idea!
Lee: You have a tiger by the tail now...this A-Z Challenge has about taken on a life of its own and that is all due to your creative genius...and the great team your work with. Awesome.
Hilary: Thanks again for your castle tours. I got lost in the rich history of the UK and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Great A-Z idea.
Wow, so so honored! Thank you so much :) I really appreciate the shout out.

A great wind-up. I needed a breather time.... as so many of us did. I too, tried to read new blogs above and below mind, finally just stayed with old friends after I hurt my neck. Now let us all enjoy the summer.
Thanks for stopping by my reflection - I loved reading yours! So in depth - I plan to do better this year at visiting and commenting throughout the year. We bloggers must stick together - now, go let your dogs pee!
Congrats on surviving the Challenge - I enjoyed reading your post :) It seems like it was a challenge for all involved :) See you around
English Speaking Zone
I so greatly admire all those who participated in the A-Z challenge. What a lot of effort and determination! While I didn't participate, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting blog after blog to see what everyone else had come up with.
I've now added so many new blogs to my favorites--and will be checking out the ones you mentioned here (Stephanie's fabulous Clay Baboons is one of my very favorites!).
Your blog, Chuck, was a favorite even before the A-Z. :D Your well-written posts are full of wonderfully odd and interesting information that I rarely see elsewhere.
Congrats on completing your challenge!
Sarah: Hey, it was a great time in April and looking forward to even more.
Manzanita: I hear ya on that one...I hope your feeling better and that your typing is not affected by your injury!
Shelia: My dogs have peed and all is right with the world! Thanks.
Barbara: Right...thanks loads. I'll be around and checking you out!
Evalina: I figured early that the visiting all would be an impossibility. I did what I could and picked up a few real nuggets in the process...quality over quantity.
Jeremy: I love your banners and buttons. And yes I stole a few! You were a great co-host...hats off to you and the A-Z team!
Super Earthing: Shows how I was paying attention...didn't you post all the letters (in picture form) in one post?? I thought that was pretty creative and unique so in my mind you participated in your way. I love your drawings and everything else on your site. I'll see you often!
Great job Chuck!
When it's all over, I always wish I had had the time to participate. Maybe I can do it next year.
