It's a Flimsie!

I started June Bug back in mid-July of last year.   I just needed to make the petals that went on the borders.   After fusing them, I did the blanket stitch around them on the machine.  This was a fun quilt to make.  I love the bright colors.

Next comes my not so favorite part of quilting--making backing and sandwiching the quilt.   I spent most of the afternoon today piecing the backing.  I'm still working on it.  When I do things I don't like I have a tendency to procrastinate take my time.

I took little breaks.  I watched 3 videos from Leah Day's Free Motion Quilt Project.  I watched 1, 2 & 3.  I was really impressed with them.  I think they will really help me with my stipple quilting.

I listened to Pat Sloan's podcast with  American Patchwork & Quilting editors Jennifer Kelter, Jill Mead, and Elizabeth Beese while I was making the backing too.  Do you listen to her podcasts?  They are pretty interesting.

I'm using some of the leftover jelly roll strips to make a scrappy back.   I'm kind of excited to get this quilt sandwiched.  I want to hand quilt it with perle cotton and big stitches.  I've never done that before.  I'll probably have to procrastinate take my time before I start.

Look at all these yummy colors!!  If you have any tips for me, I'd appreciate hearing them.  I'm sure I'll have to do some googling for "big stitch quilting" or searching on youtube.

They are predicting snow and wind for tomorrow. Our tax appointment is for tomorrow too.   I have lots to look forward to--lol.  I hope your outlook for tomorrow is brighter than mine.

I have linked up to Sarah's Friday Whoop WhoopI'm so happy to get this quilt to the flimsie stage.  I also get an extra chance to win a new book--check it out!

  2. What a gorgeous summery quilt. I can't help with the big stitch quilting as I've never tried it, but I'll be interested to see how you find it.

Hopefully your day will be better than you expect, with no snow and a tax rebate!

  3. Beautiful quilt. Kim Diel does big stitch quilting in her books. You can find them at Joann's and on Amazon. Good luck.

  9. Hmmm, 'take my time' sounds so much more positive somehow than 'procrastinate', like you are doing research and planing it al out...yes, I think I will have to adopt that phrase too!!
And you quilt? Its just wonderful! And a great uplifting spectrum of colours for these last yuck days of winter when everyone keeps telling us its really spring...I'm tempted to dig up my daffodils to see why they're not flowering yet!

  10. No tips :-) The reason why I follow quilt blogs, I love to look :-) ALthough I do love your chosen colours :-) IT reminds me of the last quilt I made. Not saying it was good, but the colour is fantastic :-) :-)

  11. I remember when you first showed that quilt - I loved it then so I'm really glad you are working on it again. It's just so happy. I think I saw that pattern in a book at the bookstore and it caught my eye. I love your idea of handquilting it with those pretty colors. I am planning to do that to my wool quilt, but I haven't started yet and I won't be using all of those gorgeous colors. Where do you buy your perle cotton?

    1. I ordered it from www.123stitch.com. There really isn't any place locally to buy it. One thing bad about ordering is picking colors. Once I get my colors and their numbers figured out I'll be able to order the colors I really want.

  12. Your quilt is wonderful - I love your colors. Also like what you are doing for the backing. Will be watching your progress on the quilting. I have never done big stitch quilting, but it is beautiful. Enjoy, Janet! Carol

  13. I hand quilt, but, I use the stab-stitch method. It makes it easier to make the stitches the length you want them to be. There is a product called 'Tiger Tape' that helps you with your stitch length. It comes in different stitch lengths.

  17. Oh, how fun and cheery! I like piecing the tops most, too. I sometimes procrastinate for years before layering a quilt!!
