WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE
1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English in 2012- amazing, baby bump, shared sacrifice, occupy, blowback, man cave, the new normal, pet parent, win the future, trickeration, ginormous, and thank you in advance. -Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Let me put it this way...I LOVE the words ginormous and amazing...but in all actuality, the word I would dearly want to be banished from the English Language is NOT here. The "F" word. I know it's just a word, but I hear it and read it so often [sometimes every other word spoken and in one particular movie that starred Paul Newman 'The Verdict'...it was in the script by a ginormous amount, I got up and walked out about midway through the movie to never return and I've not watched it even with it edited]; it just makes me cringe. Which brings me to reason: "profanity is used when the speaker lacks the intelligence to find an appropriate word to use in its stead."
2. Are you easily embarrassed? Nah!! Too old for embarrassment.
3. What is your go-to snack? Frozen Yogurt.
4. Have you ever been to Washington D.C.? If not do you have any desire to go? What site/attraction would you most want to see in that city? If you have been, what's your favorite site/attraction? Oh yes...several times. I spent a month there one summer way back in the late 60s, just learning about politics. The sights back then, were the Capitol building [and I had the opportunity to go on the subway from there to the senate building] - the Lincoln Memorial - and the IWO JIMA memorial near the Arlington Cemetery. In fact, EVERYTHING about the city. In the later years, the Viet Nam Memorial is something to behold and truly, it's humbling!! Oh, and the tidal Basin at night...breathtaking. Not to forget the Cherry Blossoms in Spring. Oh, and the Potomac Riverboat down the river to Mt. Vernon...I can still see the interior of the mansion in my mind right now as I type...it's filled with charm and even just the portraits are full of history - JFK's eternal flame - the Changing of the Guard leaves anyone to see them absolutely speechless.
5. sit ups-planks-lunges-squats...which do you hate the least? I can't say I hate any...don't do any of that.
6. What's a small act of kindness you were shown that you've never forgotten? Generosity in so many ways to list here. I'm forever grateful.
7. Have you ever been a blood donor? Yes.
8. Insert your own random thought here. ...and the girl doesn't even show fear; she sticks around. I'd be peeing my pants and running for cover while other patrons would be slipping in my [censor here]....find themselves in need of a pooper scooper, trust me!!

ReplyDeleteI think that lion wanted to eat her alive, but sweet as she probably is, maybe that didn't occur to her! I am from Washington, D.C.! I was boen and raised there! And worked there at Childrens Hospital National Medical Center! Me too!!! I LOVE ginormous and amazing, and use them a lot!!! I don't really like baby bump or blowback, and pet peeve is taking the lord's name in vain. Great post today!

ReplyDeleteI totally understand how cringe worthy the F word is but I think I'm a little immune to it (it was one of my first words as a child.) I used it to let the older neighbor kid know (at 2) that I was not playing around, "Give me my effing ball." I kind of find it amusing but I do my best not to use it in company that would be offended. The words I don't like are the ones used for female anatomy.
I just love figureheads. They don't look too good on modern warships though.

ReplyDeleteMmmmmm, me wonders if that little girl and her display of bravery, does damage to many kids watching? We are adults and we understand that she is actually in no danger. Even if we would cringe, ourselves.
But....... Do children learn that all lunging animals, will not hurt them?

ReplyDeleteLove your random thoughts. I agree with your choice of words to ban. The "F" word disturbs me to no end...and shows a lack of intelligence. There are so many acceptable alternatives which convey the same sentiment. READ and LEARN, people!

ReplyDeleteAs for question #1 the words I'd like to see banished aren't there either.
1. Awesome. I always used this word to describe something truly AWESOME like Alaska, or a beautiful sunset. Recently I gave a young cashier the correct change..she said awesome....and maybe it was to her because she can't count change...but that is not the meaning of awesome.
2. No problem: This pharse has replaced a simple yet elegant 'you are welcomed'. I cannot tell you how often I have said 'thank you' and received 'no problem' as a reply. I want to say had I know thus and so might have been a problem to you I would not have done it.

I don't appreciate movies that drop the F bomb every other word. It's the reason I couldn't watch The Sopranos. I have no idea whether or not it was a good watch. I'd love to go to DC again but this time only to see Deanie! And then to Texas to see Birdie!

ReplyDeleteI am so with you on the F-word! It is so low class and I agree with the statement that they user isn't smart enough to find a more appropriate word. We have been to many football games with our grand kids and there have been idiots that suffer from a bit too much tailgating and they let the words fly. Stupidity is alive and well.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite places in DC are the museums especially the one with the dinosaurs and the one with the early air craft. I could spend days going through all of them!

ReplyDeleteI love that video. I have a picture of my son at about 3 at a zoo in front of the tigers and there is a tiger standing right behind him at the glass just looking at him. My son's back is to him and he is just smiling away. Great answers

I saw the clip of that little girl just this evening! What an incredible experience to be able to look a lion in the eyes!!

ReplyDeleteI love the way you describe your visits to DC. You can feel the heart in your words, the awe of it all. I agree with you regarding the "F" word. The one that gets to me the absolute most is the one that uses Heavenly Father's name with a bad word. It just totally makes me nauseus. Here where we live, people use that word like using the letter "e"...it is everywhere. :(
