We went to bed last night listening to rain on the roof; and we woke to rain on the roof, this morning.
Hot ☕️ was most welcome.
Holland got a phone call this morning that took him into Seaview-WA after his morning cup of joy juice. While he was gone, I tidied our cozy nest - I know it will all be undone, again, before the day is out 🤦🏻♀️, but for a couple hours, I will know that that Independence's interior was tidy 😉
While I was sweeping the upper floor, my phone alerted me to incoming messages - I read & answered them when the sweeping of all rooms, on both floor levels, was finished:
When my husband came back home around 2 PM, he said this grey whale's mouth was entangled with fishing net, when it washed up on the beach. The poor thing had probably starved to death 😢
It looked to be about a year old - and for the first time away from it's mother's guidance; so, I thought that perhaps it had swam too close to the shoreline, and unwittingly got stranded. I did not like hearing that it had swam into a trawler's net, and it's mouth had been tangled with fishing net buoys - trapping it, in a death swim.
A Fishing Trawler Boat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_trawler#:~:text=A%20fishing%20trawler%20is%20a,midwater%20at%20a%20specified%20depth.
NO, I do not place animals above humans - but there should be a way to stop these trawler [casualties], while still allowing fishermen to make a profitable living.
The grey whale species make the farthest migration of any mammal, racking up an impressive 12,000 miles round trip! They feed in shallow waters along the pacific coastline, when they’re in their breeding grounds; this whale does not look breeding age … but, I am not a sea creature expert. However, it saddens me, just the same.
Around 3:15 PM, I started getting Supper underway.
For tonight's Supper, I wanted chicken livers - but I wanted to try something different than the way we've been eating them: the way they've been prepared is good, but I like variety … so, I made this dirty rice recipe with sautéed chicken livers 😁
This is a new recipe for both of us.
I've never eaten dirty rice before: but over the years, I have wanted to try it out. Tonight was going to be {the night} 👍
Holland has had it before with hamburger - and he of course tweaked the recipe quite a bit until it resembled a mish-mash casserole instead of a basic southern recipe 🤔
While it is true that "dirty rice" is normally made with hamburger … in my kitchen tonight, chicken livers was used; and I did a bit of my own recipe tweaking 😊👌
VAL'S DIRTY RICE Recipe ~serves 4
1 pound Chicken Livers, coarsely chopped * 1/2 tablespoon Vegetable Oil * 1/2 Onion, finely chopped (I used Red, because I like color in my world) * 2 Cloves garlic, minced * 1 c. raw White Rice * 2 cups Chicken Stock (I used homemade) * Salt (I used salt substitute) & grnd. Black Pepper to taste * dash of grnd. Cayenne Pepper
1) Heat oil in a medium-sized cooking pot. Add onion, garlic, and livers - sauté, stirring constantly, until meat begins to brown, and vegetables soften: about 6 minutes.
2) Add rice and gently stir mixture to thoroughly blend ingredients; then add the chicken stock, & spices. Bring mixture to a boil; then, reduce heat to a simmer & cover with a lid wrapped in a bandana (attach to lid handle with a hair band): cook for about 20 minutes - or until the rice has absorbed the liquid.
White Rice, & spices.
Remove from heat, and serve.
It was good, but a little bland - and the chicken livers were kinda pungent; next time I make this recipe, I will take a page out of my husband's culinary experimental notes 🤠, & add more spices … and some veggie and fruit side dishes 😘
