Using A 4 Panel Vinyl Stencil

 Cricut Crafting

Spring is here and everything is blooming so prettily.  I'm still in the mood for garden decor so this week I'm sharing another garden sign tutorial.  This one shows you how you can use vinyl to create a 4 panel (reverse) stencil:

A typical stencil would be a cut-out shape that you place down and color/ paint inside of to create the design.  A reverse stencil is a solid shape (or in this project a sticker) that you place in the area you wish and then paint over/ color around.  Once you remove the shape/ sticker your design will appear.  The photos in this post will show you exactly what I mean 😎

I found these faux window panels at a garage sale for a couple of dollars each
and spray painted them in white.  Because this project is using a reverse stencil, the first layer of paint will be the color of the design that you are stenciling.

Using my Cricut I then cut out my design in removable vinyl.  The color of the vinyl doesn't matter since I'm using it as a reverse stencil - it will be peeled off and thrown away.  I went with green just because I had an excess amount of it.

(You can find the SVG bundle that contains this tulip design here)

Because my wall hanging is a window frame, it has four separate sections that need to be filled with the design.  I cut the stencil sticker into fourths while it was still attached to the backing, then used transfer tape to apply the sticker to the frame.

This tutorial from Jennifer Maker will show you exactly how its done!

With the stickers in place I spay painted my frame again, this time in gold.

Once I peeled away the stickers the design showed up in white.

Here are how the signs looked once peeled.

(I had a little bit of trouble with the sign on the right as the paint bubbled up a bit.  It ended up not mattering as when a storm knocked down a tree that was the sign to take a direct hit 😄)

Using more of that cable wire that I mentioned last week, I strung the panels and hung them from the fence.
