On Saturday, February 15th, Gudrun of GE Designs hosted an all-day quilt-along for her newest pattern, Jolee!
The QAL was free with the purchase of the pattern. She broadcast instructions and slideshows of quilts in progress at 10 am, noon, 2 pm and 4 pm on YouTube and Facebook, each lasting about 30 minutes.
Pattern: Jolee from GE Designs
Size: 70" x 80"
Batting: Quilters Dream Request
Thread: Glide--Light Tan
Pantograph: Friction ⤵️ from Karlee Porter
The fabrics I used are "AbstrArt" by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery. There's a beautiful "Look Book" on the Art Gallery site with so many great ideas of quilts, pillows, wall hangings, hats and clothes they made out of AbstrArt!!!I went with geometric quilting, "Friction", for this very artsy fabric!⤴️ I started with 12 half-yards from the fabric line, which made a generous throw-sized quilt.
This is where I was at after the 2 PM QAL session with Gudrun and all the QALers.⤵️
Interesting Info: Gudrun named this quilt "Jolee" after her two grandsons--Johann and Leo! The pattern and 4 teaching videos are available on her website.
The trickiest part of the quilt was staggering the rows.⤴️ There were no guidelines for that. After sewing the vertical rows together, one has to randomly cut a piece off the top block and sew it onto the bottom of the same row. I had 2 spare blocks which came in handy when I didn't like the original cuts I made!
I used a velour blanket from Costco for the backing, like I did on my recent Svana quilt. They were on sale for $12.99.
Whenever I use a velour blanket, or Minkee, for backing, I trim the backing at 1.5"-2", turn it over twice and machine stitch to the front for a soft and easy binding. I hand sew the corners with these velour blankets as it's too thick to machine stitch that area.Kudos to my quilt holder!!!⤵️ It was a tricky job since the size and weight was on the high end. I suggested hanging it over the railing so he didn't have to bear the weight, but we just got 10" of heavy snow and that would involve too much snow to plow through for the photographer!
This is my favorite photo--I had no idea how good it would look on our red sofa until I draped it there!!!⤵️
Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy

I was thinking it was beige and brown until the red sofa brought out the pink and peach. Lovely. sueclive at aol dot com
ReplyDeleteWow! that quilt looks terrific on the sofa! Happy surprise! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pattern! Those on-point squares really elevate it from the "typical" strip quilt, if that makes sense. You did great staggering the rows. And wow, yes it looks fantastic on the sofa. Thanks so much for the link to the pattern and videos!
ReplyDeleteLovely collection of fabric, perfect with your sofa and the quilt design. Excellent finish.
ReplyDeleteTHose colours are so sweet together. Pretty quilt, Nancy, with pretty quilting!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific finish! Those colors look fabulous on your red couch! I have a red couch too! --TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteI love this version of Jolee! The fabric is gorgeous and it is just perfect on your couch. The snow has not been our friend for outside pictures has it? You did a great job with the quilting, too, as always!
ReplyDeleteVery nice selection of fabrics and quilting motif! I know you will enjoy decorating and snuggling with this quilt for years to come.
ReplyDeleteYour choice of fabric is very interesting. I wouldn't have picked this peachy one with the rust, charcoal and gold but you made it work. Then came the pictures with the quilting and I loved it even more. When I saw it on the couch; Sold! I'm completely sold to these colours. The rust turns out more red and every one play so well together. They were meant to be. Bravo! ;^)
ReplyDeleteStriking fabric and the quilting design is perfect!
ReplyDeleteJolee is fabulous, Nancy. I think staggering the rows would be tricky for me too. Your quilting is stunning. Have a great weekend. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteFascinating to see how the colours stand out when the quilt is on the sofa.
ReplyDeleteAnother great quilt. And getting that blanket for the backing s a bonus.
Gudrun has some really interesting techniques when making her quilts. Always good to see.
That final photo of your quilt on the sofa could be staging for real estate promo. What is amazing is how the quilt works not only with the sofa, but the carpet, tying everything together. Of course, I love the quilting. The perfect backing to snuggle under on a cold night.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt, the colors are great together and those little inserted squares on point are adorable, LeeAnnna
