Chocolate Sugar, a pantry mix for Mochas and Cocoa

Looking for ways to $kip the coffee stand for your morning cup of joe? Love a good mocha? Chocolate Sugar, a pantry mix for Mochas and Cocoa is the answer for both! Why not save some time and money and sip your morning cup of joe in the comfort of your own home...you will love this simple mix! 



Morning coffee will never be the same. Which is a good thing!

Every morning my husband and I have coffee together. It is not fancy or even a specialty blend, but it is fresh, strong, and served promptly as soon as the "your coffee is done" indicator sounds with its five little beeps. My morning coffee is something I look forward to each and every day. I like it in a big mug, with half and half, and nothing else. Some days I wake early and I have to generously wait for coffee because my husband is still sleeping. But trust me, at a certain point, the coffee maker is started, and I wake him up, because, you know, it is time for coffee!

My husband does not have the same passion for his morning cup of coffee that I do. He is more interested in the sweet side of the morning coffee business, namely, the chocolate that goes in his cup! As it turns out, he does not like just coffee but has learned that if he puts enough sugar and chocolate in his cup, coffee now tastes pretty darn good!



After trying all the options found at the market, we now make our own.

We have tried many different ways to get his coffee just the way he likes it. Let's see, we have used a commercial cocoa mix, chocolate ice cream syrup, and homemade chocolate syrup. Each has its pluses and minuses. For me, the biggest problem was running out and it did not get added to the shopping list... Our morning coffee on those mornings was not enjoyable for my husband. 

Then I ran across this Cocoa Mix recipe from the Little House Living blog. I liked that it developed to be added to milk, to make hot cocoa. The benefit, of course, is that you can use your preferred type of milk (whole, 2%, nut milk, etc.) and you can make your own cup of cocoa as rich as you like. And while we are not big cocoa drinkers, it seemed perfect as a stir in for his coffee! Well in every way, except one...I knew that I would have to adapt the recipe for my husband's preferred sweet tooth. So yes, I upped the sugar a bit.

Unlike a purchased product this has no preservatives, and still quite low in sugar. 

My my guess is, this Chocolate Sugar, a pantry mix for Mochas and Cocoa, has far less sugar than the commercial mixes we were buying...along with no unwanted additives and preservatives. So it is a win-win situation because it only takes about one minute to mix it up. Perfect for those days when I didn't know before bedtime...that the last of it was used that very morning...

If I have made this mix once, I have made it a hundred times! And while the first few times I used a food processor to mix it into a fine powder, now I simply put the ingredients into the storage jar, and shake it all together! It takes only a minute to measure the ingredients and about two to shake the jar. And there is no mixing bowl or food processor to wash up! Chocolate Sugar, a pantry mix for Mochas and Cocoa is one pantry staple you will always find in our pantry. For my husband, it is not morning coffee without it! 


Some thoughts on this recipe:

This mix is perfect for families using various dairy options. My daughter loves cocoa made with this mix and her favorite lactose-free milk. 

I have found it is just as easy to make a double batch...as to make it again in a couple of weeks!

And while I do show a food processor method, this is just as good if you put the ingredients in a quart jar with a tight fitting lid, and give it a good shake! 

We do make and store in a jar, and it sits right beside the jar of fresh ground coffee. 


Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • cocoa, use a natural style cocoa
  • sugar
  • salt
You will also need the following:
  • medium-size mixing bowl
  • measuring cups 
  • measuring spoons
  • whisk 
  • storage container
OR 
  • food processor 
Now we are ready to begin!

1 1/2 c sugar
1 c dry cocoa powder, use natural style cocoa, not Dutch-processed. 
1 t salt

Combine all ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl or into the processor bowl of a food processor. 

If using the food processor buzz in an "on and off" style until mixed and smooth. 

If using a mixing bowl and whisk, whisk together until all the ingredients are mixed together and no streaks of sugar or cocoa remain. 



Store in a covered container. 

To use, add 2 to 4 tablespoons to the bottom of a coffee mug, add half & half or milk (about 1/4 cup), and fill with coffee. Stir and serve.



Storage options for Chocolate Sugar, a pantry mix for Mochas and Cocoa. Store tightly covered in a cool dry area for up to six months.

  1. This is the exact mix my mother taught me with which to make cocoa and I still use it today but substitute stevia for the sugar.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, my husband has quite a sweet tooth (he does not intend to pull or ignore LOL!) and I make this for him. I am more a natural sweet eater with honey, maple syrup and dried fruit as my preferred sources. Years ago I use to make a cocoa mix with dried milk, but this version is so much more adaptable!
