Legend of the Forest

by Raquel Gabrielle

Publication date: April 25th 2025
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Mia has always been drawn to the unusual, a fascination that’s made her an outcast. The world beyond their wall is shrouded in mystery, with few stories to go on—mostly fairy tales or fragments about the Old Ones. No one other than the guards dare to venture into the woods, and those who have don’t return the same, if at all.

When a creature is captured in town, it sparks a chain of events that brings more dangers from the edges of the forest—some friendly, some not. As Mia helps the creature escape, she never expects to journey into the dark woods and unravel secrets beyond her wildest imagination.

There, she meets Haddox, a golden, irresistible man who offers passion and freedom like she’s never known. Then there’s Grey, his polar opposite—stoic, mysterious, and a constant thorn in her side. The tension between them boils over, until they can no longer ignore the undeniable connection between them.

Mia’s POV

Mia scrunched up the paper in her fist. She stared at the beige wall. She could not believe what she had read. Thoughts raced through her mind, and her throat tightened with emotion. The urge to scream was so strong she took a huge bite of bread, stuffing her face. The bread tasted like burned ash. As she swallowed the bread, her stomach turned sour at the thought of taking another bite. She then turned the light down low, making it more difficult to read the letter. The letters on the paper blurred together as tears filled her eyes.

“She will never accept me. Never accept anything I try or do. She will force my hand into the pictures she has chosen for me.” Tears fell down her cheeks, stifling her cry with her hands over her mouth.

A scratch at the back door caught her attention, stopping her hot tears and sniffles. Everything froze and was quiet for a moment before another scratch. The letter fell from her fingers as she went to the door. Giving the door a curious look, she loosened the tie to move the cloth and look out the window. The darkness made it hard to see what was out there. Cracking it open, icy rain pelted her bare hand. The water was cool against the heat that radiated from her.

A snout pushed hard against the opening. A body wriggled in and slid through before she could close it. Mia jumped back, surprised that the creature from earlier came barreling in, sniffing the ground. Electric blue fur with black stripes streak across the kitchen, heading back to her. Powerful limbs scrambled across the wood as his eyes feast on the hand still holding the bread. Pulling a chair out, she blocked the beast, guarding herself from being attacked.

“You hungry?” she questioned. Wanting to calm the creature long enough to settle down.

Jumping up, its hindquarters remained on the ground; its front paws landed on the chair seat. It used its front two paws to lift itself closer, reaching for the bread that was just out of grasp.

Lifting her hand up, she kept it away. “Food, you want?” She broke off a small piece, placing it right through the back bars of the chair furthest from its teeth. She pulled her hand back through the bars quickly, not wanting to get her fingers bitten off.

With a sniff of the food, a long tongue came out, licked it, and then gobbled it up. Its eyes were dark as it waited there patiently for more.

“Food?” It croaked out when neither one moved for a while.

Dropping the bread all together, Mia’s eyes go wide. “Did you just talk?”

“Food!” it said louder, giving a happy howl of excitement as it jumped down, attacking the food that had rolled. The bread disappeared in a matter of minutes. “More?” The creature cocked its head to the side and gave sad eyes.

“Oh, umm. You want more?” Her eyes searched the kitchen. She had not seen any more bread. “Are you a boy or a girl?”

“Boy.” He shuffled, coming up behind her.

“Do you have a name?”

“Bloo.” He hopped up and down, his nails clicking on the floor.

“Blue, oh, because of your coloring?”

Shaking his head. “Bloooo,” he enunciated.

“Bloo?” She shrugged her shoulders, going along with it. Opening a cabinet, she took out some plain cereal and grabbed a handful. She kneeled on the ground, holding her palm out to him. “Can I pet you? Don’t eat me, okay?”

“Food?”

“No, I’m not food. But yes, food is here.” She placed it on the ground beside her. Bloo’s steps were unsure and wary of her movements.

CHAPTER 1:

No sharp objects. Pack light.

My instinct is to run, but I don’t know how far my sore limbs will carry me.

Apathy is my last line of defense.

I reach for a baggy sweatshirt and leggings. This has become my uniform when I go away, not for any fashion statement but its functionality—it can be easily taken off before my body is searched by a nurse’s gloved hands. The pressure from the fabric causes me to hiss in pain. I carefully step each leg in to cover the tender scrapes and deep purple bruises along my pale white shins and thighs. The bruises are a reminder that I’ve messed up again.

I drag my worn leather suitcase that’s on its last leg away from our cottage and into the trunk of Olga’s station wagon. She doesn’t say a word as we head out of our driveway and onto the tree-dense highway. The branches are grayer than normal, though it could be my mood filtering the world in a cloud of indifference.

Olga rolls every window down even though it’s a brisk fifty-two degrees. Long drives make her sweat. I think she would never leave our small town if it were up to her, but I remain her forcing agent.

My eyes wander from the pastures filled with cows and horses to Olga and her wild blowing hair that is unusually more silver than black for someone in their thirties.

“So, what’s this ward like?” I ask, trying to break the tense silence.

“Don’t call it that. That’s not what it’s called. This is a treatment center.”

She turns up her classical piano playlist, the one she plays to calm her nerves, then hands me a folded piece of stock paper filled with smiling faces of young adults—those who, like me, are not teenagers anymore but not quite what I would consider adults either. Much like our mental state, we’re something in between.

The brochure states this center isn’t government funded. By the looks of it, it seems far out of the budget of Olga’s ballet studio salary and my unemployed status, but it claims as part of their philosophy that they take on special cases free of charge. Just my luck, they happened to have room for a last-minute drop-in.

After the stunt I pulled last night, I’m sure Olga would be willing to pay any price.

It takes more than magic to make a
hero, in the next installment of this hilarious and epic illustrated series.
One not-so-chosen champion and his mystical friends must cross the multiverse
and harness a dangerous power to defeat a mysterious new enemy.

.

“My favorite new fantasy series.”—Max Brallier, #1 New York Times bestselling
author of the Last Kids on Earth series

After leveling up from basement roleplaying games to saving an entire
magical realm, 12-year-old Ben isn’t happy returning to his ordinary life
of homework and chores. So when his very un-magical LARP session is
crashed by monstrous frog-men from another dimension, he can’t wait to get back
into hero mode.

Someone is after all the Spellbinder’s books, which grant the users — including
Ben — epic reality-shifting powers. Ben, Niara, Merv, Drake, and their new
friend Agnes must embark on an epic quest to save the books and their
owners. But while hopping across different realms may be Ben’s idea of a
totally awesome spring break, it’s tough to be an ordinary kid among
extraordinary heroes. Especially when fighting for the fate of the
universe seems to consist mostly of finding fun new ways to get them all
killed, from zombie rats to pool noodle squids, to a mysterious Big Bad
controlling everything from behind the scenes. How do you win the game
when someone else is rolling the dice?

Playdate

“Butternut squash!”

Behind a rotted old tree stump, Ben Whitlock, Spellbinder Level 2 and tenor in
the middle school glee club, prepared to meet his doom. His death would be
fast, and it would most certainly be messy, but that didn’t mean he’d go down
without a fight.

“I’m too cute to die!” Ben’s friend Merv squealed, hunching against the trunk
of a tree as two blasts of magic whipped overhead. “Where’s Agnes? She said
she’d cover our attack.”

“Agnes had to go put on more sunblock,” Ben said.

“Why does she need sunblock? It’s raining.”

“She has very sensitive skin.”

“Couldn’t she have waited for, like, two minutes? What did she say?”

“Something about SPF.”

“What’s SPF?”

“I DON’T KNOW! I’VE NEVER KNOWN!”

More spells flashed by overhead, crashing into the nearby trees and bushes. It
sounded like the whole forest was falling down around them. Hidden in the
safety of the drizzling mist, their enemies, a band of ruthless mercenaries
called the Circle of Souls, smacked the blades of their swords together,
filling the air with the terrifying drumbeat of war.

Taking a deep breath, Ben summoned his bravery. He’d faced bigger threats
before and survived with all his bits and pieces intact. What was one more band
of raiders? In one hand he held a small, curved war hammer, and in the other he
held his phone, which for all its cool apps and great screen resolution turned
out to be pretty useless in battle.

“We need a new plan,” he said.

“I like our current plan,” Merv said.

“Hiding behind a stump is not a plan.”

“What if we hide behind a rock? Or a ridge? Or a log?”

“Stop listing things to hide behind!”

“Can’t we just give up and go home?” Merv asked, ducking behind cover as arrows
whistled past.

Ben shook his head. “Never. We’ll fight to the very end.”

“I liked you better when you ran away from a fight,” Merv grumbled.

Gradually, the volley of arrows ended with a few final shots that plonked off
what was left of the wet stump. Then, silence. A cool breeze swept through the
trees and shook the branches.

Ben lifted a finger. “Wait! Listen! They’re planning something.”

“Are they planning to hide behind a stump, like us?”

Ben growled. “I should just use you as a human shield.”

“Too bad I’m not human,” Merv said with a wink.

BEN WHITLOCK

Always eager to rush into battle, even when he probably shouldn’t, this
courageous Earthling has a head for lore and a loyal heart. Formerly the Chosen
One of Lux, he is now known as “Mr. Whitlock” by teachers and “Hey, You!” by
other kids at school.

• CLASS: Spellbinder

• FACTION: The Four Squires (placeholder)

• ALIGNMENT: Merciful Neutral

• ABILITIES: Spellcasting, Allowance +2, Game Mastery

• SPECIAL MOVES: Double Thumbs-Up, Advanced Uncomfortable Silence

It was true; Merv wasn’t human. They were a creature called a mimir from
another world, and they could change their physical appearance at
will . . . and they could also get on Ben’s nerves like nobody
else. They snored, sang all the wrong lyrics to pop songs (“for stew, I’d eat a
cheesy fry,” instead of “from you, I need a squeeze goodbye”), and, worst of
all, they always borrowed his gym shorts and stretched out the elastic
waistbands so they fell down whenever he put them on.

Despite how much of a pain they could be, Ben adored Merv, and he was proud to
call them his best friend, roommate, and companion in all sorts of everyday
adventures, from raking the yard to running from mercenaries who worshipped a
cosmic spider named Aracnus.

A shout erupted from the brush. “Dagash, monanthus, treyar!” It was followed by
a chorus of other voices: “DAGASH! MONANTHUS! TREYAR!” Soon the words became a
chant that filled the rainy forest.

Ben rolled his eyes. “Great! Now they’re starting a creepy chant. Who knows
what it’s going to do?”

“Don’t blame me,” Merv said. “I tried to convince you to stay home. I wanted to
binge-watch Total Housewives, but no, you had to fight an epic battle.”

“Where’s Agnes?” Ben grumbled.

“Who cares?” Merv said. “Agnes isn’t helpful in a fight. Remember last time?
First, she morphed your head into a wiener dog, and then she healed all the
members of the enemy party by accident. We got slaughtered!”

Ben bit back his reply. Merv was right, of course. Agnes had proven herself to
be about as useless as a box of expired batteries. Not for lack of trying. He’d
never met anybody so eager and willing to help out, but so surprisingly bad at
it.

“We need to flank them,” he said, stealing a glimpse over the gnarled roots of
the stump. The enemy flitted among the trees, chanting prayers to their twisted
bug god. “What if you changed?”

Merv pouted. “What do you mean? I like who I am. It’s taken a long time for me
to feel comfortable with myself and–”

“No, you goober,” Ben snapped. “What if you changed your appearance so you
looked like one of them, in Circle of Souls armor? Then maybe you can get
around behind their battle line, and, surprise, you get the drop on them.”

“Here’s an idea,” Merv said. “We admit to ourselves that we’re outmatched and
leave battles like this to the real heroes. Then it’s twenty-four-seven pj’s
and pizza!”

“Disgraceful,” Ben grumbled. “And you call yourself a magical creature from
another dimension. After everything we’ve done to get this far, you just want
to walk away and let those jerks win?”

Merv shrugged. “I hate to be the one to tell you this, buddy, but we’re not
heroes. And your Quest Master days are over.”

Their words stung because they were true.

All his life, Ben had wanted to be a great warrior who went on dangerous quests
and fought the forces of evil, hoping to earn his place as a hero of myth and
legend. Unfortunately, he lived in the suburbs, and opportunities to go on epic
adventures didn’t come along very often. All that had changed last year, when
he stumbled into the magical realm of Lux, where he’d been mistaken for its
Chosen One, a long-awaited figure who was meant to bring about a new era of
peace and enlightenment. Instead, he’d done a lot of property damage and
undermined Lux’s biggest religion. His journey through Lux had been the most
exciting time of his life, but after everything was said and done, he’d come
back home again. To school. To laundry. To pop-up ads and pollution. These
days, he dreamed of escape more than ever.

A husky voice rose from the tangle of shrubs high on the hillside. “Your
resistance is futile. Surrender now, and we shall show you mercy! We will allow
your bodies to host the larvae of roach pups!”

“See, that doesn’t sound so bad,” Merv said. “Roach pups! Cute!”

“Your souls, however, are a different matter. They will be sacrificed to our
dark lady, the undead Aracnus, queen of the spiderlings and High Goddess of the
Poison Court!” There was some intense whispered discussion, and then a second
voice added, “And your eyes, we’ll need your eyes too! She likes the eyes!”

Ben looked at Merv, and Merv looked at Ben, and the two made an unspoken
decision. After three months together, they’d developed the ability to hold
almost entire conversations in complete silence, as all best friends do. “Fine,
you jerks, you win!” Ben yelled, stepping into the open, arms raised. He flung
his war hammer to the wet grass in front of him and unbuckled his sorcerer’s
supply belt, tossing it aside.

“Yes, we surrender!” Merv yelled, joining him, arms over their head. “Can we go
home now?”

Three black-armored mercenaries in horned helmets shuffled from the trees,
looking like beetles walking on their hind legs. The leader, a tall guy with a
jeweled scepter, made straight for Ben. Clearly, this was the Circle of Soul’s
notorious war captain, Skreel the Pungent.

“So, we meet at last, Sir Ben,” Skreel said, casting a glance around the
forest. “Where’s the third member of your party? Is she waiting to spring a
surprise attack?”

“Agnes is probably hydrating,” Merv said. “Or looking for more hand sanitizer.”

Skreel sneered. “I’ve been after you twerps for weeks, and somehow you’ve
managed to escape every time. But not today.”

“Yeah, fine, whatever,” Ben said. “You win. Can you take us prisoner now?”

“Sorry,” Skreel chuckled. “We don’t take prisoners.” Then he pointed at them
with his jeweled scepter. “Execute this scum.”

“Wait a second!” Ben shouted, but he was too late.

A hulking mercenary advanced, whirling his huge sword with creeptastic glee.

Ben felt a surge of panic as he stared death in the face. He hadn’t expected it
to end like this, not at the feet of a bunch of bullies like the Circle of
Souls. He’d always pictured himself going out like a true hero, maybe standing
atop a perilous cliff and facing down an endless horde of slobbering werewolves
with nothing but an oversized dinosaur bone. Or trapped inside a video game
that had grown self-aware and tried to rewrite reality’s code from the inside
out. Certainly not on his knees in front of Skreel the Pungent, a guy who still
needed his older sister to drive him to the park every Saturday. It was
humiliating.

The executioner raised the broadsword high above his head.

“May your spirits find refuge in the web of Aracnus,” Skreel said, blessing
them. “May your eyes nourish the damned.”

Ben closed his eyes and held his breath.

He heard the blade whistle through the air. . . .

“Boop!”

The tip of the foam sword tapped the back of his neck.

“You’re dead, punk.”

Ben flopped to the damp grass and groaned. Seconds later, Merv joined him.

Their executioner, a kid named Trevor who worked stage crew at Sweet Air High
School, raised the helmet to show his face. He was trying to grow a mustache
and failing miserably, with an upper lip like a patch of dirty Velcro.
Cackling, he sheathed his weapon and turned to rejoin the rest of the
mercenaries. The Circle of Souls cheered triumphantly and beat their fists
against their armored chests, howling to their creepy spider god.

“Tough luck, Whitlock,” Jason “Skreel” Mundus said with a chortle. “One of
these days you’ll be a worthy challenge.” Then, with a rallying cry of DAGASH!
MONANTHUS! TREYAR! he led his party away to hunt the remaining LARPers hidden
in the overgrown forests of Tuna State Park.

As Ben watched them go, the weight of the loss settled over him. Just a few
months ago he’d saved a fantasy world from the clutches of a mad wizard. Now he
couldn’t even defeat a squad of tenth-grade mercenaries in homemade costumes.
He stared at the leafy canopy overhead and tried to find the energy to get back
up.

What kind of hero was only a hero sometimes?

After a while, Merv stood and peeled off their headband, revealing the two
slightly pointy ears that stuck up from their silvery hair. They extended a
hand. “On your feet, Sir Ben of Sweet Air.”

Ben wanted to stay grumpy, but he couldn’t help but return Merv’s impish smile.
Time and again, his friend showcased an incredible ability to lift his spirits
even in the darkest moments. The mimir’s good humor was almost as magical as
their power to change their appearance whenever they felt like it. After their
exploits in Lux, Merv, who was an orphan, had moved in with Ben and his mom in
their two-bedroom apartment, posing as an exchange student. Life with them made
everything better.

“Well, that was embarrassing,” Ben said, craning his neck so he could see the
back of his pants. “Do I have any leftover spell on my butt?”

“No, you’re good,” Merv said.

After gathering their weapons and gear, they retraced their steps to Picnic
Area 8, a patch of overgrown grass that wound along the rocky shoreline of Lake
Tuna. A bright midday sun peeked out from behind the clouds and the gray
drizzle trickled to a stop. Ben and Merv plunked down at an empty picnic table
to let their wet clothes start to dry.

The Sweet Air Protectors held events every Saturday in Tuna State Park, rain or
shine. They were a recreational LARP, or live-action role playing, society that
simulated adventures and battles in a fantasy world. Most of that time was
spent drinking a lot of spiced cider in the “tavern,” a park shelter they
rented for twenty-five dollars an hour, or telling jokes, and poking one
another with foam swords. Since joining, Ben and Merv had played one prison
break, a werewolf solstice festival, and a raid on a necromancer’s dungeon. In
the meantime, they had made a lot of enemies but only one new friend: Agnes.

After nearly an hour of waiting, Agnes returned at last, pulling her small
rolling suitcase behind her, white sunscreen slathered all over her face. She
had her black hair wound into two long braids that swung back and forth as she
walked.

“Hey, guys! What did I miss?” she asked.

“Only our total defeat at the hands of our enemies,” Ben grumbled.

“So, a pretty normal Saturday,” Merv added.

“Where did you go?” Ben asked. “We needed you!”

“I wanted to wash my hands,” Agnes said. “The necro curses made my skin all
sticky. I think the bag was leaking.”

Ben and Merv didn’t know Agnes very well, and on the surface they didn’t have
much in common, but when none of the other LARPers wanted to recruit her, they
decided to give her a chance.

She unzipped her rolling suitcase and unpacked a picnic lunch, and while Ben
handed out napkins, silverware, and paper plates, Merv spread the tablecloth.
Then the three friends plopped down, shoulder to shoulder, on a blanket by the
rocky shore of Lake Tuna and relaxed, listening to summer playlists on Ben’s
phone. As the last of the storm clouds faded, a welcoming heat beat down on
them, and sunlight turned the surface of the lake into a glittering sheet of
silver.

Eyes closed, Ben fantasized about his Spellbinder’s book, the relic that had
briefly given him the ability to conjure spells and change the world around
him. Although he’d only known about these powers for a short time, he’d come to
feel a connection to them, as if the notebook was just another part of his
body.

Magic, however, was highly unpredictable, and Ben and the group had decided to
stop using the notebook and stash it someplace safe until they could figure out
what to do next. Until that day came, Niara and Drake, their two best warriors,
had embarked on a quest to track down any other Spellbinders’ books that might
lie scattered across the many realms.

It was a quest Ben desperately wanted to be on.

MYREVIEW

This isn’t my first crime solving rodeo with Sally Witherspoon. I really enjoyed the first story in Death In The Ozarks.

Now, some of you may think, how can the police and FBI want a bar owners help in solving a murder. I found it very believable. Being a bartender for many, many years, I learned to read the room and the people. To spot trouble brewing and behavior that makes someone ping your radar.

Sayyly was looking forward to a well deserved vacation. She’s on a cruise of the Mississippi River. Her holiday gets cut short when one of the guests dies under suspicious circumstances. She jumps into the investigation, knowing she’s painting a target on her back. They’re all trapped on a boat with a killer.

The cast and crew were so diverse. There’s some I wanted to kick in the seat of their pants. Fear and uncertainty doesn’t bring out the best and people. Sally was so good at keeping her temper and sifting out clues with these people.

I was so caught up in this book. And as the body count rose, so did my anticipation. There were so many suspects and I was clueless on the who and why.

Another solid winner in the series. Can’t wait to see what Sally stumbles into next.

MY REVIEW

I love a good mystery and it’s even more fun when there’s more than one. And more than one murder. I know, doesn’t sound so good. But, it’s fiction. This book has a pile. The small Ozarks town of Berry Springs has a pile of bodies and no suspect in sight. Or maybe too many to choose from. Enter Sally Witherspoon. She owns Sally’s Smasher, a local biker bar. When a connection between the victim’s and her club is discovered all eyes to turn to her and her clientele.

I really like Sally. It’s nice to have an amateur sleuth that’s a bit more mature. Doesn’t mean she’s that much wiser in figuring out the who, what and why. But she’s determined despite warnings from the police to mind her own beeswax and maybe drawing attention from the killer or killers. Oh yes, who says there can’t be more than one.

When I reached the end I realized I’d read the book straight through. It was that fun. And if I’d had the next one, I’d have picked it up and continued reading.

Her Darkest Hour

by Suzy Henderson

Publication date: May 8th 2025
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Historical

In the shadow of war, a young woman must choose: deny her magic or wield it to stop a traitor before Britain falls.

England, 1939. A young witch. A nation at war. A spy hiding in plain sight.

As war looms over Britain, Eliza MacLean wants nothing more than an ordinary life. Raised on the Isle of Mull, she’s spent years denying her gifts—just as her mother insisted. But her grandmother taught her differently, whispering ancient knowledge of herbs, charms, and spells.

When her grandmother dies, Eliza seeks refuge in Cambridge with her cousin and the women of the WVS. But beneath its spires and blacked-out streets, Cambridge hides more than just scholars and soldiers. A secret network of witches is working to protect Britain from an enemy who knows magic is real—and seeks to weaponise it.

Drawn into the fight, Eliza is thrust into a world of espionage, deception, and occult warfare. Her rare abilities catch the attention of MI5 agent Alex Fletcher, who needs her help to unmask a deadly spy before it’s too late.

As she learns to harness her power, Eliza finds herself torn between duty and love, risking everything for Jim, a fighter pilot whose fate seems written in the stars. But war is ruthless, and magic has a price.

With the spy closing in and the war reaching new heights of peril, Eliza’s only hope of saving those she loves is to embrace the very magic she’s spent a lifetime hiding—no matter the cost.

But some powers were never meant to be used.

Perfect for fans of A Discovery of Witches and The Rose Code, Her Darkest Hour blends historical fiction with supernatural intrigue in a gripping tale of war, witchcraft, and sacrifice.

The Witches Who Went to War: The Real History Behind Her Darkest Hour

When I started writing Her Darkest Hour, I wasn’t just inspired by the idea of witches in wartime—I was captivated by the real, historical belief that magic could be used to defend Britain.

In researching the book, I discovered a lineage of magical resistance stretching back centuries. In 1588, when the Spanish Armada threatened England, tales emerged of magical circles cast to summon storms. During the Napoleonic Wars, rural communities quietly turned to cunning folk—herbalists, charmers, and wise women—to protect them from invasion.

But perhaps most fascinating of all is the rumour that during WWII, a group of witches gathered in the New Forest to perform a ritual known as the Cone of Power. Their aim? To stop Hitler from setting foot on British soil. It sounds like folklore—but it’s part of Britain’s strange, often forgotten magical undercurrent. The war wasn’t just fought on beaches and battlefields. It was fought, too, in glades and gardens, by those who believed the spiritual realm had a part to play.

That hidden history became the beating heart of Her Darkest Hour. Eliza Maclean, a young Scottish witch, is drawn from her quiet life on the Isle of Mull into a war she never expected to fight. Recruited by MI5, she finds herself hunting a German spy in Cambridge—but with magic, not guns.

I wanted to honour both the women who stepped into wartime roles and the lesser-known stories of those who used ancient knowledge to protect what they loved. Eliza’s magic is not flashy or cinematic—it’s rooted in emotion, empathy, and intuition. And that, perhaps, is what made it so powerful.

In the end, this book is a tribute to the quiet guardians of our past—those who lit candles, traced symbols, whispered prayers to old gods, and believed, fiercely, in their country’s protection.

What if those rituals worked?

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy discovering Eliza’s journey in Her Darkest Hour.

Enjoy this peek inside:

For the rest of her life, whenever she closed her eyes, she’d see Liam’s face at that moment. Hurt and fury blended into anguish, his face twisted and eyes cold. Eyebrows narrowed in disdain.

“Hey there,” Jack said from behind her. He stuck his hand out to Liam. “I’m Jack, and you are?”

Liam didn’t acknowledge him or his offer of a handshake. Instead, he turned and walked away from Charlie. She watched as he got into his car and peeled out of the parking lot, disappearing from sight. She watched the space where he stood, as if watching would bring him back.

“Charlie, you look like you saw a ghost.” Jack moved in front of her, putting his hands on her shoulders. “You all right? Who was that?”

Her face fell, the weight of what she’d done bearing down on her. She wanted to crash to her knees and let the heaviness blanket her until she couldn’t feel it anymore.

“Hey, let’s get home,” Jack pleaded gently.

“Go ahead,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I’ll meet you there. I just …I need a minute.”

Questions plagued Jack’s face, but he didn’t object.

The stars kept shining; the crickets continued to chirp. Families hugged their kids for a job well done and piled into cars to go home. Time passed, crowds dispersed. She waved off the coach when he told her he was shutting down the lights. The world moved on unaffected while Charlie’s carefully built life crashed and burned around her. She found herself on the pitcher’s mound, her bare legs covered in goosebumps despite the late summer heat.

She screamed into the night sky. She stomped and kicked at the dirt. Dust billowed around her like a tornado. She flailed her arms and pounded her feet while ugly tears slid down her cheeks. Why? What will happen now? Bile rose in her throat, and her heart pounded so hard she thought it might burst.

Impossible questions throttled her, which only made her cry harder. What-ifs circled her like vultures. She thought of Matty and their wonderful life with Ada and Sam. What would she tell them? She plopped to the ground and pulled her knees to her chest. She wanted to curl into a ball and sleep. Every muscle in her body ached with exhaustion. The emotional turmoil of the evening finally catching up to her. She longed to be held, to smell Rachel’s lavender perfume as she held her close.

Tires in the gravel lot startled her out of her misery, and she watched as Liam climbed out of the driver’s seat and strode toward her.

Cowboy Watch

By Petie McCarty

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Synopsis

The Watchers Series—Fallen angels cast out of heaven by the archangel Michael for coercing with Satan to gain control. Some of these conspirators—duped late in the game by Satan’s lies—doubled back to seek redemption for their unwitting betrayal. Offered parole in exchange for penance, these Watchers are given the toughest bodyguard missions with little leeway for success.

One last chance.

These are their stories . . .

Cowboy Watch:

Someone—or something—wants Kellen out of town . . .

Kellen Brand’s inheritance comes as a monumental shock—a rundown farm she doesn’t want and one paroled Watcher all her own. Kellen’s eccentric mother believed Watchers to be fallen angels seeking penance by guarding individuals who had lost their way. Seriously? A Watcher? Only her mother . . .

Since Kellen vows no sane woman would choose to live in Riverside, she’s on a mission to dump the old farm fast and to the first buyer who comes along. Unfortunately for her, the only buyer is a resort developer, spurned by a townful of objectors and one handsome cowboy—her neighbor, Luke Thornton. Luke must block Kellen’s farm sale or risk exposure of his own family’s secrets. He can ill afford his immediate and compelling attraction to his new neighbor.

Someone is watching Kellen, but not who she thinks. Someone deadly and intent on scaring her out of town. Or worse. Luke has a hellish choice to make—step in and rescue Kellen from her threats, or to protect his family, stand by and watch . . .

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
“And you are on my front porch because?” he barked, while holding the skittish stallion in place. Windsor had had his head, and he wanted it again.
Kellen’s eyes went wide with guilt. “I was just—”
“Snooping?” Windsor sidestepped to the right, forcing Luke to twist around in his saddle to hold eye contact.
She stiffened and her brilliant green eyes flashed with temper. “I was not! You-You—” She stamped her foot.
“Owner?” he said, unwilling to let her off the hook for an instant. Not when he had her good and cornered. Thank God, Windsor kept him so busy he didn’t ogle her like a schoolboy.
“No, I was going to say—”
The horse reared and pawed the air, effectively cutting her off. Of course, Luke’s little heel nudge and rein tug instigated the ostentatious display. He swiftly turned the horse back around so he could face her.
“So, why are you here? On my front porch. Peeking in my windows.”
She gave him a glare fit for the devil. “I was not peeking. I was trying to see if anyone was home.”
He waited.
Her eyes narrowed. “I didn’t want anything.” She hesitated. “I wasn’t doing anything.”
“Well, if you didn’t want anything and you weren’t doing anything . . .” He eased the powerful horse right up next to her though she stood her ground on the bottom step. “. . .then you must need a ride home.”
He snatched her off the step before she could answer and counted on the little spitfire having the presence of mind to swing her leg over the horse when Windsor took off. She didn’t disappoint him. The stallion streaked for the break in the tree line, and she clung to him like a tick on a coon dog.
