Back To The 80´s #1

We found this Walkman in Wilhelmshaven by the sea in our short holiday in October this year.

Did you have such a fancy thing back then, this rather "unhandy" musicbox to walk around with?
Do you remember what to do if your cassette lost it´s mind? Always have a pencil at hand, huh?

And when you wanted to record your fav song from the radio and the darn guy, before the song was over, started talking already? ARGH!!!

My walkman was a boring grey, if I remember correctly.

A new series, fitting to the mural, even:

"These inventions are older than you think

How old do you think the inventions we use every day are? Maybe a few decades? Maybe a few centuries? It may surprise you how many everyday inventions existed years before they were commercially successful - some have even been around since ancient times. Here are 20 inventions that are older than we often realize."

Let us start with this, shall we?

"Zipper

In a period drama, you'll probably look twice when the Victorian-era characters zip up their jackets. However, the first version of the zipper has been around since 1851. The invention, which was initially known as an automatic, uninterrupted clothing fastener, only became established in the 20th century, when the modern zipper as we know it today was patented in 1917."

I remember well taping songs from the radio and the presenter would start talking before the song was over! Good time, lol. And yes rewiring the tape with a pen.... Nice mural find. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals

Loving that utility box, in fact I use to own a yellow walkman that played tape cassettes in the 80s

What did they do during medieval times? Imagine no zipper. My muumuus don't have zippers. They are so loose fitting that I just pull them over my head. I guess if women back then wanted to wear something tight, then they would use buttons.

Same here! Helps (with mine) when you don´t go parallel!

Padre, this is Germany. Streaming is of no use - all in German... We buy DVDs... We live behind a rock.

I often lose buttons and... zippers break. But for warm clothes in winter zippers are best!

My Walkman was silver or grey. Bulky to walk around with. Wow, who knew the zipper was that old?

I had a tape walkman. One tape at a time, so you always needed to carry extra tapes. Now I just use my phone. Times have changed, haven't they? hugs-Erika

There were walkmen with more than one tape??? Mine could take but one. You use your phone. Gosh, now I feel like a dinosaur!.... Meep, hugs....

My walkman was a beautiful deep red colour and I had a silvery blue one after that, or maybe before it, I don't remember. All I have now is a mini ipod- 3cmx3cm (1+1/8 inch x 1+1/8 inch) it holds a lot of songs but is obsolete and I can't edit out the songs I no longer like. I don't listen while I'm out walking, only at home and mostly from playlists I have on my laptop. "no-one" has her music on her phone and I could too, but prefer to keep it just as a phone.
I remember reading about the history of the zipper a long time ago.

I hate zippers when they get stuck. I used to have a walkman back in the 80s. In the 70s, I remember seeing people my age around 20 walking the city streets with boom boxes turned up loud ad carried on their shoulder.
