This week at
it's my turn to choose the challenge and I'm saying, "Non-Traditional Winter Holiday!" which mean I want to see those Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/Solstice or other winter holiday projects that have a non-traditional element. Could be colours, or stamps or embellishments or whatever. I'm not picky! (:
This is what I did.....
I used lots of pink and a digi from Pernilla Nilsson, which is a gnome, but I'm saying it's an elf. So there. (:
Speaking of non-traditional things.....I don't think there's anyone out there who doesn't know what a rainbow is....
I snapped this earlier this month. You can see an 18' tall me shadow, walking....what appears to be a dinosaur. Other than that, pretty normal stuff. But, have you ever seen....
...a fogbow? I took this photo five days before the rainbow pic. I know, kinda hard to see. Below is an edited photo that shows it a little clearer, however, the colours are a bit off (which is why I didn't just post it).
And for some shameless copy-and-paste explanation: A fogbow is a rare, white or pale-colored optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight passes through fog or mist, creating a wide, pale arch. Fogbows are also known as white rainbows, cloudbows, or mistbows. A fogbow is similar in some respects to a traditional rainbow forming from sunlight interacting with water droplets contained in fog, mist or cloud rather than interacting with raindrops as it does in a classical rainbow. These water droplets are much smaller than raindrops, nearly always less than 0.1 mm in diameter. The smaller droplets cause light to diffract more, which makes fogbows appear white or with faint traces of color.

Love the pop of the red sentiment against the non-traditional colors in your complementary patterned papers in your background. Love your ELF pulling in a pastel of traditional red and green in his outfit. Adorable and fun Christmas card... thanks for sharing your combination of stitching with us at Double Trouble.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute. I really need to start showing some of my older digis a little love. Love you PN elf. As for you rainbow, very cool. It would rival most any I have seen here in the land of rainbows. I have never seen a fogbow, but now that I have been educated, I will be on the lookout. Have you ever seen a moonbow (or a lunar rainbow)? We have them every now and then, not as brilliant as the rainbows but they definitely show colors.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I'd love to see a moonbow!
DeleteThis is a very cute card, thank you for joining TH&ICC Anita DT

Love your super, cute, little elf :-)
ReplyDeleteOoh, a fog rainbow. I've never heard of that before, which is odd, because here in Yorkshire, we definitely get our fair share of fog :o) Great photos.
A wonderful card, a super cute character and...those socks!! Thank you for sharing at The Cutie Pie challenge. Lovely pics too. Sarah

ReplyDeleteWowsa! That first rainbow was a beauty! Rare to see one so perfectly arched. I liked your photo as well, seeing the flatness and fields. Kinda reminds me of where I grew up in Oklahoma. Likewise the fogbow, very interesting, and yes, I did indeed learn something today. But, you didn't say...is there a pot of gold with a fogbow, too? And on to the card...love the pastel color scheme, the sparkly sentiment and your awesome coloring! Btw, did you know the kleuren met Potloden blog challenge is only for pencil colorers? You should link this beauty up.
ReplyDeletelove the glittery stars and sentiment ... so very glad you joined us at Jingle Belles.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet card, and created with non-traditional holiday colors. Thank you for sharing with us at Double Trouble #180. These rainbow/fogbow photos are great, Jan. I have never heard the term fogbow, but remember my dad telling me at a very young age when I could not see a rainbow that others did, "If the sun is behind you, you will see the rainbow even through the fog." And he was right.
ReplyDeleteJan, I always enjoy seeing what crafty people do to create non-traditional holiday cards - yours is so clever using pink! I had never heard of fogbows before. Thanks for including the photo and explanation!! Great use if stitching on your card for our Double Trouble stitching theme, too!!! -Donna
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful card in your non-traditional colors. Love the little gnome and the way you have arranged your sentiment die cuts! Thanks for sharing your card with us in the Christmas Challenge on the Addicted to Stamps & More Blog. Cathy ATS&M DT

Hey, Jan. Thanks for your comment. I didn't know your postal workers were on strike. It must be annoying personally, but, yes, even 2 weeks can be devastating for charities and smaller businesses. Hope they resolve their dispute soon.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love a pretty pink & green color combo in the shades you used. Very sweet card. Thank you for sharing at Double Trouble.
