Novel Threat: A Pen & Dagger Novel by Traci Hunter Abramson-Romantic Suspense Review

Book Synopsis

In a world of covert codes, two CIA operatives must infiltrate a New York publishing house, where every word on the page could be a weapon.

Brandon Hale, a seasoned CIA case officer, contemplates leaving the covert world of espionage behind to embark on a quieter path in publishing. But his plan takes an abrupt turn when a critical source within the Labyrinth terrorist organization is assassinated, leaving behind a cryptic message about a New York publishing house. Rather than submitting his resignation, Brandon finds himself going undercover at Monroe Publishing to stop the next terrorist strike against the US.

Kimber Seidel, a CIA finance officer with secret aspirations of becoming a novelist, enjoys a serendipitous encounter with a handsome book lover like herself on her way home from London. Though she cannot reveal her true employment to her new friend, Brandon Hale, she can’t deny the instant spark that ignites between them. When Kimber’s manuscript is unexpectedly shopped to Monroe Publishing as a pawn in the CIA’s counterterrorism plot, Kimber must navigate the intersection of her literary dreams and her covert life as well as her deepening connection with Brandon.

Though each decoded message is leading Brandon and Kimber closer to the truth, it is also leading them into the line of fire, where the stakes are higher than anyone ever imagined.

My Review

A new series by author Traci Hunter Abramson is always an exciting event. Novel Threat is the first book in the Pen and Dagger series. It includes everything fans expect from Abramson – CIA agents, espionage, terrorists, and a touch of romance.

The story pulls you in from the very first page and never slows down. It’s set in the world of publishing, which adds a fresh twist to the usual thriller. Kimber Seidel is a CIA finance officer and an aspiring author. Brandon Hale is a seasoned CIA case officer. The two are paired up to stop a terrorist plot. Kimber goes undercover as a rising author. Brandon works as a personal assistant for a big name at Monroe Publishing. Together, they try to find the mole inside the company helping terrorists plan an attack on the U.S. The chemistry between Kimber and Brandon is instant, making their partnership even more fun to follow.

The story’s cast of characters feels real. From the friendly neighbor who shares baked goods to Kimber’s lively sister. There’s also the gossipy coworkers Brandon interacts with and Amelia, his strong boss, who keeps you guessing.

My favorite parts were the action scenes—racing through New York and being chased by a hitman. But I won’t spoil the ending. The last few chapters are full of surprises, making every reader want to keep turning pages.

This romantic suspense story made me excited to meet new characters and see what would happen next. Abramson is good at keeping readers on their toes until the very end. I didn’t see the big reveal coming, thanks to all the red herrings. Novel Threat will make your heart race, challenge your thoughts, and leave your romantic side smiling at the sweet kisses and growing love. It’s a quick read thanks to its perfect mix of mystery, action, suspense, and believable romance.

Someone wants to kill her. She wants the killer to finish the job.

Spring Weston will do anything to rise in the ranks of pro cycling and prove she isn’t the one failure of the five Weston siblings. Anything except cheat. When she learns of doping on her cycling team, she’s determined to uncover the truth. But she can’t if she’s dead.

Sergeant Torin Cotter may not be the hero the public thinks he is, but he recognizes fear when he sees it. When he takes over the investigation of the collision that landed Spring in the hospital, he’s compelled to protect her from whatever danger she’s in, even though he knows he might fail. Again.

Spring’s faith in God isn’t enough to help her face the living nightmare she awakened to after the accident. But neither she nor the handsome sergeant see the greater threat that’s coming until it’s too late.

If they’re going to survive, Spring and Torin will not only have to confront their worst fears—they’ll have to find a reason to live.

Waylaid is the first installment in the thrilling Windy City Westons series that features five siblings who encounter danger and love in the city of Chicago.

My Review

This story is packed with intensity, just like Agen’s other novels. The plot is complicated, with several storylines that connect in surprising ways. Both Spring and Torin have their wounds—physically, mentally, or emotionally. I appreciated watching how their relationship grew, from distrust to trust. Faith plays a major role here; both characters learn to rely on God again. The message is clear—hard times don’t mean God has forgotten you. It’s a beautiful truth to hold onto.

A murderer is threatening Spring while warning her not to reveal the truth about her accident. Torin is determined to keep her safe. Spring worries that someone might die because of her. I admired how Torin was such a good man. Despite losing his wife, he still gives his best, even when he's hurting inside.

The buildup to the big reveal kept me on edge. I had my suspicions about who the villain might be. Naturally, as with all of Agen’s books, there are many twists and surprises. The story kept me guessing until the very end.

I’m eager to read more about the Weston siblings. It was fun to see them come together to support their sister, Spring. Their father, on the other hand, came across as mean and proud. I wonder if he will change as more books in the series come out.

If you’ve never read a book by Jerusha Agen, this one is a good choice. It has suspenseful scenes, family drama, and a sweet romance. Waylaid offers plenty of excitement for fans of Christian Romantic Suspense.

My Review

The Blue Orchid Society Series is a personal favorite of mine. Its women are strong and truly independent. Each friend shows great loyalty and intelligence to one another. Sadly, this is the last book, but it ends well.

Book five centers on Dahlia Lancaster. Society shunned her after a failed proposal humiliated her. She spent a year rebuilding her life. Dahlia takes over a steamship company via her inheritance. The launch has her friends and some foes aboard. Lord Miles Meridith, her old friend, still loves her and Dahlia doesn't know about the extent of his feelings. His devotion touched me, even with Dahlia's doubts. The romance builds slowly. But the pace seems real with all the shipboard events.

Here's what makes this book special:

  • -The Blue Orchid Society rallies to

           support Dahlia.

         -Mysterious events and dangers

  •      abound on the ship.

    • -A French Chef serving delicacies.

  •   -Friendships and loyalties face tests.

  •  -A Magic show with "illusions" playing
  •    a big part.

-A slow-burn romance with some lovely  moments between Dahlia and Miles.

The mysteries surrounding the mishaps on the cruise are very intriguing and pull you in quickly. The twists and turns will keep readers guessing until the culprits are finally revealed.

You can enjoy this book without reading the others, but please start with the first book. You'll become better acquainted with the Blue Orchid Society ladies and other characters. This series celebrates loyal friends and confident women. You'll also adore the rare men who love and support their ladies and help them fulfill their dreams. This Victorian Era series is a must-read for historical romance fans.

The Crime Brulee Bake Off (A Claire Walker Mystery) By Rebecca Connolly-Cozy Mystery Suspense Review

 Book Synopsis

An unexpected romance. A haunting mystery. Pastries to die for. The Great British Baking Show meets a cozy mystery with a contemporary romance and a Regency-era twist.

Amateur baker Claire Walker is thrilled to be a contestant on Britain’s Battle of the Bakers. She can almost smell the fresh pastries wafting through the air. If she can win the grand prize, she can ditch her teaching job and launch her baking career.

The Viscount of Colburn, Jonathan Ainsley, is the custodian of Blackfirth Park and an eligible bachelor. He reluctantly agrees to allow the cooking competition show to film on his estate, but when a contestant is found dead soon after filming begins, Jonathan is forced to get involved. To make matters worse, the baker’s death stirs up rumors of the legendary death of the tenth Viscountess of Colburn two hundred and fifty years earlier.

Even as suspicion falls on some of the bakers, a decidedly different kind of heat begins to simmer between Claire and Jonathan. If they are to have any hope of a future romance, they must first solve the mystery before the show gets canceled or someone else falls prey to what some believe is the Blackfirth Park ghost.

My Review

Crime Brulee Bake Off is a delightful read, murder and all! Romance, mystery, and yummy baked goods create a great mix. I adore cooking shows like Master Chef and The Great British Baking Show. This book was clearly made for me.

The story unfolds in the UK at Blackfirth Park. Jonathan Ainsley, Viscount of Colburn, is the estate's owner. Britain’s Battle of the Bakers picks Blackfirth to host this year. Claire Walker, a contestant, is thrilled to be on the show. Soon, she and Jonathan find the show turns into a scene of murder and danger.

Here are some things I loved:

-The English estate setting.

-A baking competition with so many yummy baked goods.

-The story of friendship and betrayal.

-The instant attraction turning into something more.

The Crime Brulee Bake Off has great characters and lots of suspense. The long-awaited kiss is amazing. Dive into this romantic suspense quickly, grab your favorite baked good, and start reading.

Shake-speared in the Park { A Bay Browning Mystery Book #2} By Joy Ann Ribar-Blended Mystery Review & Giveaway

Shake-speared in the Park by Joy Ann Ribar Banner

SHAKE-SPEARED IN THE PARK

by Joy Ann Ribar

March 17th - April 11, 2025 Virtual Book Tour

Book Synopsis:

Shake-speared in the Park by Joy Ann Ribar

A BAY BROWNING MYSTERY

When Bay Browning helps direct the Flourish College summer theater production, “Shakespeare’s Couch,” she doesn’t plan for murder at the first practice.

Someone wants revenge against the elite cast members, as more terror unfolds on stage and backstage with each rehearsal. What should be a lighthearted parody on The Bard and his characters is cursed from the start, even without someone shouting “Macbeth” in the theater. Detective Downing takes charge of the crime, but Bay and her puzzle-solving cohort, Jen Yoo, follow their own script behind the scenes. Cassandra, Bay’s extraordinary sister, makes her own dramatic entrance on the case. After all, Cass is now the personal assistant to one of the elites living the high life on the bluff above Prairie Ridge. How many tragic scenes will be scripted before the villain faces the final curtain?

My Review

After reading The Medusa Murders, I was excited to read Shake-speared in the Park. This second Bay Browning Mystery proved to be another hit. They remind me of Agatha Christie novels with a clever plot, intricate clues, and unforgettable characters.

Professor Bay Browning directs a theater production called “Shakespeare's Couch” at Flourish College. Rehearsals begin, and a student actor dies. The mystery takes off right away. Author Joy Ann Ribar plants clues throughout the novel, but also uses misdirection to keep readers guessing. Bay's sister Cassandra helps with her special gifts of intuition.

The sisters team up with Detective Downing. All three characters are well-developed. I enjoyed finding clues with Bay, Cassandra, and Downing. They look into the lives of the elite. Even the side characters have many layers but they also become suspects. As the plot tightened up and the supposed killer was almost known, that's when the twists appeared.

The investigation often examined the psychology of the suspects' minds showing their secrets, drives, and ties to each other. Many puzzling clues just waited to be found. The last chapters held many surprises for me. The killer's reveal and motivation were not what I expected.

If you want a smart and thrilling read, pick up Shake-speared in the Park. If you want to solve a mystery right along with the detective, this is the book for you.

Praise for Shake-speared in the Park:

"A clever cozy that reads like an elusive buried treasure, that, once uncovered, shines with a burnished gold. Shakespearean scholars can revel throughout, as a college summer play, Shakespeare’s Couch, features a myriad of familiar characters, representing their plays. A costume party with more Shakespearean identities milling about provides sheer fun and frolic. The best part, however, is the thorough depiction of humanity, characteristic of Ribar’s writing. Even secondary characters come alive with strengths and foibles that delight and endear."
~ Saralyn Richard, author of the Detective Parrott mystery series, Bad Blood Sisters, and Mrs. Oliver’s Twist

"Ribar serves up wicked, clever fun in 'Shake-speared in the Park,' the second installment in her Bay Browning mystery series. A young man with much promise falls from a stage-prop balcony. He's dead when he lands, but that's not what killed him. Was his brother, the wayward son, involved? His best friend? Or one of the wealthy equestrian crowd? Then, another death, this time in a greenhouse. It's like 'Knives Out' meets Agatha Christie. Suspects abound. Two sisters—one a killer magnet, the other an ex-con—are determined to find out. The escalating tempo keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the end!"
~ Laurie Buchanan, author of the Sean McPherson crime thriller novels

"In this fast-paced mystery and nod to Shakespeare, the murderous shenanigans would please the Bard himself! Professor Bay Browning’s play rehearsals go awry with deadly weapons, poisons, and just about anything else a playwright might use to scare or 'off' someone in dramatic fashion. As in 'Romeo & Juliet,' differences of class and money between families put a small Wisconsin college and Bay in the crosshairs. Replete with a twisty costume party, this novel opens the curtain on an entertaining theater production with actors poised to take their final bow, pun intended. Ribar balances scenes effectively between amateur detectives Bay and her sister Cass, the latter a plant aficionado and former prison inmate. To borrow from the Bard, 'To read or not to read?' The answer is easy: This is fun."
~ Christine DeSmet, author, Fudge Shop Mystery Series and Mischief in Moonstone Series

Read an Excerpt:

Carillon Tower Park was buzzing with activity when Bay arrived for rehearsal. Desmond Carver, the director, was only steps ahead of her, so she dashed to catch up. Bay smiled at his signature bobbing walk on those extra-long legs that might belong to a pro basketball player instead of a theater professor.

“Desmond, hey. Looks like the students are psyched about the show.” Bay nodded toward the outdoor theater area where a portable tech booth had been set up. People inside were testing spotlights and sound effects.

The stage was midway through set construction showing false stone walls and two framed second story balconies. Someone was sweeping the stage free of pine needles, while a couple of others were taping the floor where furniture would go. Bay waved at Jen Yoo, her art professor friend, who was painting a flat with some students.

“It’s a positive sign when they show up early. Believe me, once we’re in the trenches, some will find reasons not to show up at all.” Desmond set a stack of scripts on one of the seats near the middle of the theater. “Actors,” he said using air quotes around the word.

Bay’s optimism didn’t dwindle. She was pleased with the turnout for auditions, considering it was a summer production, meaning many students were gone or working. The fact she and Desmond had backups for the main roles revealed enthusiasm for the show.

Desmond handed her a theater badge and key for the rooms beyond the stage. “By the way, in case I forget later, thanks so much for volunteering to help with the play. It can be a thankless job.”

Bay grinned but wondered why Desmond was being so pessimistic. He wasn’t close to retirement, maybe ten years older than Bay, and she’d pegged him as carefree and upbeat. Then again, in the two years she’d been a Flourish professor, she’d had a handful of short conversations with him.

At seven p.m. on the dot, the clock tower bell rang out the hour and Desmond spoke through a megaphone he’d brought to rehearsal. “Let’s get going. We start on time. We end on time. That’s my number one rule.”

To Bay’s surprise, every student hushed without delay. She’d heard Desmond was respected, and he knew these students from past plays. Many were seniors doing a final postgraduation show before entering the real world.

“For the first few rehearsals, we’re going to need to work around the set builders and the tech crew setting up lights and testing sounds. This isn’t a typical show. Summer theater is a shortened schedule, so we’re putting an entire production together in short order.” Desmond handed printed schedules to Bay, who passed them out to the actors and crew.

It wasn’t quite June, thankfully, because performances were marked for the last week of that month, just past the celebration of Midsummer on June twenty-fourth.

“You’ll notice on the schedule that all lines must be memorized by June tenth. That’s two weeks, my friends. Let’s make it happen.” Desmond used his teacher voice. Even Bay snapped to attention.

“Places everyone. We’ll start with the prologue and go straight through from act one as far as we can until eight-thirty. The script notes some introductory music, but we won’t add that for a couple of weeks. Proceed, Kitt.”

Bay and Desmond watched from the back third of the theater, taking notes as lines were delivered, stopping when necessary to help with enunciation or cadence. At the end of the second act, Desmond announced a seven-minute break, then headed to the tech booth to talk about lighting.

Bay noticed he seemed nervous about the tech crew being run by an intern. His normal production partner, Leo, another theater professor, was spending summer break in New York City at a Broadway intensive master class. Leo recommended a theater grad student from Madison to take his place.

As lights flashed on and off in different positions, Bay watched the techies at the booth. Desmond pointed at the script as intern Evan made notes, then flashed the light Desmond asked for. Bay noticed Evan’s body posture: alert, attentive, like a golden retriever eager to please. In contrast, Desmond alternated running a hand through the twists on top of his head, placing his hands on his hips, then rubbing the back of his neck before repeating the moves again.

“That looks intense.” Jen Yoo was sitting by Bay, a clean paint brush in one hand.

“Hey, Jen. Yes, I’ve never seen this side of Desmond. How about you?”

Jen shrugged. “I haven’t worked on a summer production in some time. The younger Desmond was laid-back. But some of us lose our patience as we age. Thankfully, I don’t have that problem.” She snickered.

Bay turned her full attention to Jen. “Why are you working on this production, anyway?”

“Two reasons. One: It fulfills my volunteer hours for the whole year. Two: It’s a show you wrote. I’m proud of you and want to see how it turns out.” Jen leaned her head over to meet Bay’s.

With break wrapping up, chatter from the stage echoed around the quiet outdoors. When a commotion ensued, Bay chalked it up to high energy from a new show, the honeymoon period. But then a loud thud sounded, someone began shrieking, and a cacophony of shouts and running feet ensued.

Bay, Jen, and Desmond ran to the stage, with the tech crew close behind. The adults vaulted onto the stage where the lead actor, Talon Hunt, lay crumpled in a twisted heap.

“Everybody back up,” Desmond shouted.

“He fell off the balcony,” one of the students called out.

“I didn’t mean to. We were goofing around, practicing a duel.” Jackson Lange knelt over Talon, his chest heaving, his face distraught.

Desmond, Jen, and Bay knelt beside Talon too, and Jackson stood up and looked away. Desmond checked Talon’s pulse, shook his head, listened for a heartbeat, and shook his head again. Bay called 911.

“Let’s straighten him a bit so I can do CPR.” Desmond motioned for Jen and Bay to get on either side of his legs and they gingerly turned him.

Desmond was still administering chest compressions and breaths when the emergency team arrived to take over. Thirty minutes later, the EMTs pronounced Talon dead.

The Big Bad Wolf (Grimmworld #2) By Michaelbrent Collings-Middle-Grade Fantasy Review

  Book Synopsis

Willow and Jake have done the impossible by saving Hansel and Gretel from the witch in the woods, they brought the first “happily ever after” to Grimmworld. But in the real world, their father is still missing, and the boundary between universes has grown even more fragile. Determined to reunite their fractured family, the twins return to Grimmworld to find their dad, their great-to-the-tenth-power grandfather, and the perpetually befuddled, acorn-loving, naked mole rat, Chet. But Grimmworld is a treacherous place, and soon, Willow and Jake are captured by fairies, who are less innocent and more dangerous than expected, and forced to make an impossible Steal the golden claw of the Wolf King and return it to the fairy queen in exchange for information about their father, or refuse and become the fairies’ eternal, soulless slaves. But to steal the Wolf King’s claw, Jake and Willow will have to undergo the Wolf Trials, a perilous series of tests and traps that will push the twins to their limits and beyond. It will take Willow’s strength, Jake’s intellect, and the love and friendship they share—and maybe a few treats from Red Riding Hood’s magical basket—to defeat the Big Bad Wolf, find the next clue to their father’s whereabouts, and perhaps even bring another “happily ever after” to Grimmworld.

My Review

I enjoyed the first Grimmworld book and this second one is even better. Willow and Jake return to Grimmworld where they must use their smarts and strength. They are searching for their dad and Grandfather Grimm who are needed to save both their world and Grimmworld.

Adventure fills every page of this book. This makes it a hit with kids, tweens, and adults. The twins battle evil fairies and huge, hungry wolves. There is a perfect balance of description and witty dialogue that envelops you and brings you along to Grimmworld for a wild adventure.

My favorite part of this book belongs with the wolves. Willow and Jake find themselves having to strengthen their own relationship to survive the tests the wolf pack gives them. It’s inspiring when the twins learn to trust themselves and each other. Great lessons are hidden for readers as they enjoy the story.  There were many clever ways that Willow and Jake used their "powers" to defeat the evil Wolf King.

The Big Bad Wolf is an excellent sequel to a wonderful first book. I'd love to listen to the audiobook too. This novel would make a great read-aloud at school and also a family book to read together. I loved the book club questions at the back to make kids and adults bring the life lessons the twins learned front and center. The Big Bad Wolf is easily a 5-star book and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
