She’s marked by stars, hunted by shadows—and destined for a love that spans worlds.

Insight

Insight Series Book 1

by Jamie Magee

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

"Spellbinding lyrically crafted fantasy series." Sarah Dodd

"Magic, action, and paranormal romance offer an escapism that will engross readers—the story stays with you, unforgettable." - M. Mass

Cursed with an empathic insight, Willow Haywood has lived her life as a proud introvert in a small town. Her world shatters when a nightmare brands her wrist with a star. The foreboding omen forces her family to unveil ancient secrets that bend the boundaries of reality, dreams, and dimensions.

In the chaos of this revelation, Willow focuses on the good dreams she had every night of her life. Her instinct promised her that the angel in them was real, that he was her soul mate, and together they would be an unbeatable force in the promised war of young gods.

The conflicted path to him was easier to face than the mystery, magic, and danger haunting the shadows of the cosmic storms on the horizon. With or without him… her nightmare would soon be her reality if she did not flee to the dimension her soul once roamed.

Guided by love, tormented by fear, and hunted by those who would twist her gifts for their sinister ends, Willow’s journey is one of self-discovery, sacrifice, and the relentless pull of destiny.

Insight is a spellbinding tale of love, prophecy, and the courage to find your true self. Perfect for fans of young adult fantasy and multidimensional adventures, it’s an unforgettable story that will stay with you long after the last page.

Are you ready to step into the storm? The journey begins here.

"We lost ourselves in the teen angst of Fallen, and Hush, Hush. We found courage in the pages of Hunger Games and Divergent. Our imagination was on fire inside of Mortal Instruments, Throne of Glass, and The Red Queen. And now we have the compelling, enigmatic, character-driven thrill ride of the long-reaching contemporary fantasy series INSIGHT." Colleen Riley

 GUEST POST!

Writing Between the Lines of the Stars: How Astrology Shaped My Debut Novel—and My Life By Jamie Magee

Hi, I’m Jamie Magee—author of the Insight series and host of the Scheduling Fate podcast. I’m so honored to share a piece of my story with you—and hopefully, spark something familiar in yours.

When I first started writing Insight, I didn’t set out to tell a story about astrology. I set out to chase a daydream that would not stop haunting me…

But as the characters took shape and the plot found its heartbeat, I realized something: astrology—something I’ve loved and studied my whole life—wasn’t just influencing my story—it was embedded in it, quietly guiding every turn.

That’s the thing about astrology. For me, it’s never been about predicting the future. It’s about understanding the present and seeing yourself more clearly, spotting the patterns that keep repeating, and asking why. Astrology helped me make sense of the people I love, the moments that cracked me open, and the paths I kept getting pulled toward—even when logic said otherwise.

In Insight, that idea takes on a life of its own. Willow Haywood, the main character, is an empath. She doesn’t just walk through the world—she absorbs it. Her dreams bleed across dimensions. She feels things before they happen, and fears that she’s too different ever truly to belong.

Early in the story, Willow asks:

“Why do I have to be so freaking different?” That question wasn’t just hers. It was mine. And maybe, it’s yours too.

That’s where astrology becomes more than a fleeting interest for those who look a little deeper into their stars—it becomes a framework, a pathway to self-discovery. A language I used to explore the idea that we all arrive here with a cosmic blueprint. Not a rulebook, but a rhythm. One written in cosmic timing, energetic signatures, and soul-level lessons.

“Every first breath is full of unthinkable power and promise… but yours, Willow… there’s lifetimes of karma within your natal promise.”

When I was writing the Insight series, I didn’t build characters from the outside in—I started with fictional natal charts. I let the planets sketch out their strengths, their flaws, and their fated paths.

Each planet played a role:

☉ The Sun as their purpose. ☽ The Moon as their emotional truth. ☿ Mercury as their voice. ♀ Venus, what they loved. ♂ Mars, what they fought for. ♃ Jupiter as their wisdom. ♄ Saturn, their lessons. ♅ Uranus, their breakthroughs. ♆ Neptune, their dreams. ♇ Pluto, their transformation.

Every twist in the plot echoed a celestial rhythm. Astrology wasn’t the theme of the story—it was the pulse behind it.

And once I began writing, I couldn’t stop. The first draft of Insight came quickly. Within a year, I had three more books written and a growing realization: I wasn’t just telling a story. I was telling a collective story. And I needed a way to keep the conversation going—not just in fiction, but in real time.

That’s why I created my podcast, Scheduling Fate.

Unlike the novels, the podcast isn’t fantasy. It’s real-world astrology—delivered in plain language, rooted in current transits, and grounded in daily life. I break down the emotional waves, the energetic openings, and the timing cues you might be feeling but not fully understanding.

I started the show because I wanted to make astrology feel useful. Something that helps you stop fighting your nature—and start flowing with it. Because I believe that timing matters, knowing when to pause, pivot, or push forward can save us from burnout and self-doubt. That your chart doesn’t limit you—it liberates you.

Astrology helped me understand myself as a writer: someone who needs space, silence, and deep emotional honesty. And it helped me craft characters who wrestle with the same questions we all face—just with a bit more magic.

“The stars do not shape our lives; we choose our path to the fate we accepted long before we take our first breath.”

That line from Insight captures my belief: astrology is a mirror, not a map. A way to remember who you are—and who you came here to become.

So, if Insight is the soul's story told through fiction, Scheduling Fate is the ongoing dialogue. A chance to check in with your energy, your timing, and the path you’re consciously (or unconsciously) choosing.

You don’t have to speak astrology to understand either one.

You just have to be curious.

You just have to have wondered—even once—Is there more to this moment than what I can see?

Because the answer, always, is yes.

If you’re ready to dive into a story filled with karmic twists, soul contracts, and unforgettable characters, I invite you to begin with Insight—the first book in the series, free to download at your ebook retailer.

And if you're curious about your chart—your timing, relationships, and purpose—come join me at SchedulingFate.com. You can tune in wherever you get your podcasts, and explore more tools, insights, and cosmic downloads at my site. I’d love to walk this path with you.

Ghost and Tell

A dead teacher. A scandalous secret. And a PI who’s way too caffeinated to quit.

Ghost and Tell

Ghost Detective Book 10

by Jane Hinchey

Genre: Paranormal Cozy Mystery

A dead teacher. A scandalous secret. And a PI who’s way too caffeinated to quit.

Being a private investigator—and a ghost whisperer—means juggling the dead, the murderous, and an espresso addiction I refuse to acknowledge.

When the ghost of schoolteacher Sandra Greaves crashes my morning coffee, she’s not here for small talk—she needs me to find her killer. Problem is, her memory is patchy at best, and the only thing she’s sure of? Someone wanted her silenced.

The trail leads straight to shady school financials, questionable payouts, and a scandal involving an angry parent and a morally bankrupt school board member. Now I’m knee-deep in hush money, buried secrets, and motives worth killing for.

Meanwhile, my smokin’-hot husband is trying (and failing) to keep me out of trouble, Thor, the talking cat, won’t shut up about his diet, and Bandit, my cereal-stealing raccoon, is plotting her next snack heist.

But someone out there thinks I’m getting too close to the truth—and they’ll do anything to keep it buried.

Join Audrey Fitzgerald in Ghost and Tell, a paranormal cozy mystery featuring a talking cat, a mischievous raccoon, a ghost with unfinished business, and a murder to solve!

Luka

From rivalries to secret glances across the rink, dive into a story filled with passion, ice, and a little bit of chaos.

Luka

A Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series Book 2

by Alisa Jean

Genre: Sports Hockey Romance

As the hottest left-winger in the league, I was the handsome golden boy for the L.A. Quakes. But after suffering horrific injuries during a game, my life is on a breakaway to disaster. My biggest fear is a darkness from my past is about to repeat itself. All I want to do is hide from the world, but fate has another plan.

Feisty beauty Liliana Alvarez doesn’t suffer fools lightly, especially when it comes to her kids in her new non-profit outreach. She’ll drag me, kicking and screaming, if necessary, from the hole I’ve crawled into if it’s the last thing she does. For some reason, she is patient enough to wait for me to heal and something sparks between us, wounds, and all. But her abusive ex-boyfriend threatens to shatter our hopes of a happily ever after.

Can enemies-turned-lovers help save each other or is the ice tilted against us?

EXCERPT

LUKA

Easing open the door, I slip through, bolting to the welcoming darkness of the closed Quakes’ Cove bar. I lean against a wall, shrouded in shadows, and stare down at the rink below. It’s late morning, and the rookies are doing drills under the watchful eyes of Jason Tolls, Linc, and a couple of other player development coaches. My friend looks in his element. Happy. Shit. I miss him, as well as Sonny and Bri. But I don’t go out much. Between scaring a kid at the grocery store and panic attacks that strike out of nowhere, I keep myself hidden away. The guys have their lives, and I don’t need to ruin their happiness by freaking them out. They wouldn’t care, but I do.

“Hey.” The soft, whispered word makes me glance away from the ice. F**k. Catherine Bishop, the Quakes’ owner, and Linc’s girlfriend, steps into the bar and stands next to me. I turn my face away, seeking refuge in the shadows.

“Oh, no you don’t.” Catherine’s finger touches my chin and turns my head so I’m facing her. “You will not hide from me.” She stares directly into my eyes. Her family did everything in their power to help me recover, starting with the best sports ophthalmologist so I wouldn’t lose my eye. Then a world-class plastic surgeon to keep my scarring to a minimum. I have a functioning eyelid, thanks to them. “Your features were way too pretty and perfect. The scar helps. You now look kind of like a bad boy. Women will go crazy.”

I can’t help the snort which escapes me. “In my dreams.”

She nudges me with her shoulder. “How’s your mom? I miss Maja.”

“She’s good. I spoke with her this morning.” Catherine came over a few times and took my mom out to lunch or dinner so she could have a break from me. I’d been such a hurting asshole that my boss took it upon herself to look after my mom. They hit it off. Why not? They’re both powerful women. Catherine shattering glass ceilings and my mom raising three kids on her own after my dad lost his mind.

She gestures to the ice. “How’re the rookies? See anyone impressive?”

I break our eye contact, relieved to go back to the shadows and study the players below. Some of them are in their young and gangly stage, like Bambi on ice. But some of the older kids are filling out and showing the promise of their mature athletic bodies to come.

“Your giant six-six goalie looks promising. He’s going to kill it in the AHL for the Tsunami. Linc must be drooling. For his size, the kid is agile, and he knows how to stay deep in his crease. He’ll be a brick wall for our opponents.”

“Yeah, I have high hopes for him. I also like the left winger, Berglund.” She slants her gaze my way. “He reminds me of you at his age—fast, full of energy, great hockey sense.”

“Looking to replace me? Afraid I’ll scare the fans?”

She glares at me. “Stop it, or I’ll tattle to Linc that you’re feeling sorry for yourself.”

Catherine never takes my bullshit. I sigh. “Too soon to joke?”

“If I thought you were joking, it’d be okay, but I know you weren’t.”

How does she read me so well? “Fine. You’re right.” We watch the rooks in peaceful silence. I can almost relax.

“Hey Ribi, good to see you.” An L.A. Quakes’ blogger calls out in passing.

Suddenly, my heart starts pounding. I break out into a sweat and dizziness swamps me, making me sway. My whole body shakes. F**k. I can’t have a panic attack. Not here. Not now.

Oye gilipollas,” a tiny woman shouts and storms into the bar. I automatically translate the Spanish into English—Hey, a**hole. Before I could blink, the petite Latina stabs her finger into my chest, while glaring at my face, stopping my anxiety attack in a flash.

LILIANA

Frustrated as hell, I flew out of the Quakes’ Foundation’s office and storm past a man and woman lurking in the shadows of a closed bar, watching guys skating below. Weirdos. I didn’t know who he was until someone yells, “Ribi.” I assume it’s some sort of nickname for Luka Ribic, my MIA hockey player. Not about to miss this opportunity, I spin on my heels and go in for the kill.

“Oye gilipollas,” I shout, stabbing him in the chest with a finger. I have to reach to hit my target. The big guy is almost a foot taller than me. He must have understood my Spanish because he blinks at me like I’m a crazy woman. This smug a**hole has the nerve to smirk at me. “I came to talk to the Quakes’ Foundation. Maureen claims you’ve been out on medical leave. What a load of doody!”

“Doody?” The spark of humor reaches all the way to his light brown eyes.

Lincoln

A Los Angeles Quakes Hockey Series Book 1

L.A. Quakes’ fans stomped their feet to cheers of “Caveman!” when I made incredible saves in the crease, leading the team to two Stanley Cup victories. I thought I could go on forever, but at thirty-six, the clock’s counting down even for Lincoln Cavanaugh. Social media and fan sites are filled with rumors of me being traded. Or worse. My future looks as uncertain as a loose puck on the ice.

My fate rests in the hands of Catherine Bishop, daughter of the team’s owner and a power to be reckoned with. And what fine hands they are, along with everything else about her. A chance encounter leads to sparks between us, but is falling in love with this incredible woman worth the risk?

Because with her by my side, I’m once again an unstoppable force between the pipes, and victories pile up like never before. However, our love is a ticking time bomb because Catherine has dreams of making history as the first female and person of color to own an NHL team. Sleeping with a player would make that all go up in smoke. I fear when the truth comes out, it will be the final buzzer for us.

EXCERPT

I take his tiny gloved hand in my large one and start skating to where the Tremblers are standing in lines in front of the coaches. My friends are right behind me when we stop next to the staff, and I give the boy a gentle push. “Go get back in formation.”

Coach Greer holds out a hand, which I shake. “Thanks for doing this, it means the world to the kids.”

“It’s our pleasure.” My teammates nod along in agreement.

Greer introduces us to the tiny players and as I gaze over the group, I’m happy to see a lot of girls. This isn’t always the case at this age, so I’m glad their numbers are growing. Usually, they’d rather be figure skating. We’re about to break into groups for drills when I hear another pair of skates hit the ice. Turning, I’m stunned to see Catherine gliding toward us.

I spin and whisper-shout, “Who the hell invited her?” while glaring at my friends.

“Um,” Ribi raises a hand. “I thought since she was interested, she could tag along.”

My lips thin into a frown. All three of them bust out laughing. Oh shit, this is a setup.

“Hey. Sorry, I’m late. Traffic coming over the hill was murder.” She murmurs to us, then smiles and gives a wave at the kids. “Hi everyone, I think I missed the intros. I’m Catherine Bishop. My father, Robert Bishop, is the owner of the Los Angeles Quakes. I’m not the best hockey player, so I hope you’ll teach me.”

Which is bullshit. I know she played in college. They weren’t champs or anything, but she knows her way around the ice. I smile, knowing she’s fibbing for the kids’ sake.

And she’s adorable. She threaded her ponytail through the back of her Quakes’ baseball cap. Her hair swishes back and forth every time she moves. She must have gotten the memo, because she’s dressed identically to us, from hockey skates, black snow pants, and a Quakes’ sweater, though hers isn’t numbered. It’s a blank. The hockey gloves swallow her hands, but she holds her stick like she knows how to use it.

Since the introductions are finished, the kids break into groups for drills and my teammates spread out to help. The time flies and my cheeks hurt from the constant smiling.

Then Sonny yells over in that commanding captain's voice, “Caveman, little help in the right circle.” I snap to it, instinctively following his orders because, on the ice, he’s the leader. We all follow and would do anything for him. Then I realize he’s sending me over to Catherine, who is having trouble teaching a little girl how to skate backward. Ribi and Bri are both closer, so his master plan isn’t exactly subtle. If there weren’t kids around, I’d tell him where to shove it, but we’re here for them, so I skate over to help.

“There seems to be a bit of a balance problem over here.”

“I’m a good skater,” Catherine states. “But apparently not the best instructor.”

“No worries,” I crouch in front of the little skater. “What’s your name?”

“Lacey.”

“Nice to meet you, Lacey. Can I show you something?”

She nods her head frantically, and my smile turns into a grin. I stand and hold my stick across my body and lower it to her height. “Grab on with both hands.” She does. Next, I bend my knees a little and lean a tiny bit forward at my waist. “Okay, copy me.” Lacey does, and I start skating forward. She’s pushed along with her grip on my stick. “Good. Keep moving your skates. Excellent. Now take one hand off.” Her balance wobbles, but she recovers. “Great job. Now, without losing your position, I want you to let go and keep skating.”

She looks a little nervous but follows through. She remains upright and skates backward.

“Awesome, Lacey. Look at you go.”

“I’m doing it! I’ve got this.” Her voice filled with pride and smiles.

“Yes, you do. Keep going.” I encourage her and step to the side, watching her skate away.

Catherine skates over. “You’re pretty amazing yourself. It’s like you have this magical touch. I spent almost twenty minutes with Lacey and got nowhere. You skate by and in less than a minute, she can skate backward on her own.”

Before I can reply, I’m slammed from behind, cut off at the knees. I fall forward into Catherine and we both go down. A little boy does a victory circle around us before skating off. I hear my friends laughing, those fuckers. I’ve got to be crushing her, so I move my weight to my arms and look down. “Are you all right? Did you hit your head?” We aren’t wearing helmets. I don’t want her to move if she’s hurt. It’s when I’m staring at her I realize how incredible she feels beneath me, all soft and curvy. I need to banish those thoughts before my cock gets ideas. There’s no way she wouldn’t notice in this position.

“I think I’m good.”

“Okay, let’s take it slow.” I get to my feet and hold out a hand, pulling her up. She’s standing close, so it’s easy to touch the back of her head. “Any pain or tenderness?”

“N-no, I-I’m fine.”

I stare into her eyes. They’re an amazing combination of brown and green. This woman. There’s so much more to her than anyone knows. Screw it. I’m going for it.

“Catherine,” I whisper.

“Y-yes?”

I lean a little closer, our noses almost touching. “Have dinner with me? Sunday.” This close, I can see her eyes dilate with my question. She’s attracted to me. “Come on, say yes.”

“It’s a bad idea,” she whispers back.
“Probably, but let’s do it anyway,” I smirk because I can’t help myself.
“Okay.
“Okay.” I smile and skate backward, away from her. This is either the best decision ever or the worst mistake of my life.

Asset in Black

 A man without a country.

A spy without a master.

A rogue with one more mission.

Asset in Black

by Casey Prescott

From the minds of Janet & Chris Morris

Genre: Action Techno-Thriller

Cordell 'Cory' Hunt, a renegade free agent who has worked for both U.S. and Soviet intelligence agencies, is recalled from Morocco by U.S. agents to give one final debriefing. Within hours, he's headed on a nightmare black op with more hanging in the balance than he'd ever expected.

Asset in Black is the single best espionage/spy thriller I've ever found. Complicated characters, women in major roles, shifting alliances and shifting loyalties, layers on layers, tremendous action sequences, a sleek plot, everything in perfect focus, a dog, and supremely satisfying ending. Thirty years after I first read it, it remains remarkably undated, and I'll still place it at the top of my top ten list. – Amazon Review

 EXCERPT

Hunt knew the position of the munitions depot by heart; he could draw a map of the compound in his sleep.

He waited for the leader’s signal—a wolf’s howl.

When it came, Hunt fired the rocket, knees braced against the shock and sound, head buried in the crook of his arm, then hit the dirt as it arced toward the munitions dump.

Nonetheless, the shock wave from the explosion buffeted him; the concussive roar of assorted munitions going up deafened him.

He never got back to his feet. Well before the ringing in his ears lessened, Hind helicopter gunships descended on them out of the black night, spewing cannon fire and antipersonnel explosives.

Hunt had time only to grab the man next to him, pull the mujahed down by the ankles, and bury his own head in his arms before the ground around him began to shudder with near-miss explosions and he was showered with clots of dirt and shattered rock and the occasional wet debris of a human body blown apart.

Just as he took his arms away from his head and neck to grab his rifle and shoot back at the gunships, now swooping with blinding searchlights while their gunners kept the mujahedin pinned, something exploded right beside him and the back of his head came off in a blinding shower of multicolored sparks.

Imaginary Heroes

His friends may be IMAGINARY… but the danger is REAL!

Imaginary Heroes

by Michael Seidelman

Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy Adventure

His friends may be IMAGINARY… but the danger is REAL!

Twelve-year-old Matthew’s life has been incredibly challenging because of his Tourette Syndrome, a disorder which causes uncontrollable movements and sounds. Isolated and tormented by bullies at school, Matthew finds solace in the company of his lifelong imaginary friends, a lovable green monster and a tough-as-nails little girl.

On his way home from school one day, as Matthew is pursued by his relentless tormentors, they all crash into a mysterious underground lair. At first, it seems that being trapped with the bullies who make his life miserable is his biggest problem. That is, until he and the others discover that they are not alone.

Hunted by a menacing presence lurking in the depths, Matthew and the bullies must confront a threat to their very existence. Their desperate mission becomes clear: put their differences aside and work together to find a way to safety before they are all consumed by the darkness.

Although fictional, the book is inspired by the author's own childhood experiences with bullying, loneliness, and Tourette Syndrome. He set out to craft an engaging story while exploring issues many kids can relate to—told from the perspective of someone who has lived them firsthand.

 GUEST POST

Can you tell us what your book is about?

Imaginary Heroes follows twelve-year-old Matthew, who struggles with Tourette Syndrome and relentless bullies. He finds comfort in his imaginary friends—a tough girl named Nabie and a lovable green monster named Garby. But when Matthew and his tormentors become trapped in a mysterious underground lair, they must work together to escape before the darkness consumes them all.

What inspired you to write this story?

I wanted to dedicate my next book to my nephew, who’s an avid reader, so I decided to write something for his age group. I was working on the final book in my young adult Garden of Syn trilogy when I heard a radio segment about the host’s imaginary friends—and that sparked something in me. I began thinking about my own imaginary friends from childhood and the challenges I faced, like bullying and Tourette Syndrome. From there, the story came together naturally.

Are any parts of the story based on your real-life experiences?

Very much so. While the book is fictional with elements of fantasy and adventure, Matthew—the protagonist—is similar to me when I was his age. Like me, he has Tourette Syndrome and is bullied at school. Because of his isolation, he still talks to the same imaginary friends I once had: Nabie & Garby. Although I left my imaginary friends behind in kindergarten, I brought them back for this story. The bullies, especially Declan, are inspired by the real ones I encountered growing up.

What was your favorite scene to write?

While the fantastical parts were a lot of fun, my favorite scene to write was when Matthew finally snaps and tells his main bully, Declan, how the constant bullying has impacted his life. It’s everything I wish I could have said to my bullies but never did. Writing that moment was incredibly cathartic.

Did any other books or authors influence your writing?

Absolutely. Growing up, I loved Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton. Their creativity and heart have definitely influenced my own writing style. I also drew inspiration from a few other authors I’ve read over the years who know how to mix humor, suspense and imagination.

Are there any hidden details or easter eggs in the book that readers should look for?

So many! While most might go unnoticed, I’ve included the names of businesses my great-grandparents owned, a former teacher’s name, and references to historic Vancouver companies—even though the story is set in Washington State. It’s a little way for me to honor my roots.

What was the most challenging part of writing the book?

Writing kids wasn’t too difficult—I was one, after all! But writing kids in a different era than the one I grew up in was definitely a challenge. I had to do quite a bit of research to make sure it felt authentic. My nephew and my sister, who’s a teacher, were incredibly helpful in that process.

Do you plot out your stories in advance or make them up as you go?

I’m definitely a “Plotter.” While some authors are “Pantsers” who write by the seat of their pants, I outline everything in advance. I map out the details for each chapter before I even start writing. Sure, some things change along the way, but the major plot points are always planned out from the beginning.

What do you hope kids take away from your book?

First and foremost, I hope they have fun reading it. Above all, I aim to entertain. But I also hope the story encourages empathy—that kids will come away understanding that people who are different from them deserve kindness and compassion just like anyone else.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I just want to thank everyone for checking out my books—whether it’s Imaginary Heroes or The Garden of Syn trilogy. If you read the book and want to share your thoughts or ask me anything, feel free to reach out on social media or through my website. I’d love to hear from you!

 EXCERPT

He heard the patter of footsteps. The bullies were inside the building. He ran to the other side of the machinery so the gang couldn’t see him. As he moved through the factory, he attempted to pry his phone from the tight jeans pocket. When he finally got it out, he plugged in his passcode and started to text his parents. He typed Declan’s name and realized that if he could show the bully that someone might suspect him of wrongdoing, Declan might think twice about doing any serious harm.

He wished he had thought of that sooner.

Suddenly, he heard creaking. He spun around to see Declan standing over him on an old conveyor belt. Declan kicked the phone from Matthew's hands, its screen cracking on the concrete below. Matthew dropped to his knees beside it as Declan jumped down, nearly stomping the tattered phone.

“You were going to call your parents for help?” Declan sneered as his friends caught up behind him.

Matthew scrambled with his phone, but the screen wouldn’t light up.

He started to cry.

“Enough,” Booker said. “Seriously, man. You already wrecked his phone. Just let him go home.”

“Not going to happen,” Declan said, inching toward Matthew. Matthew hurried to his feet and ran toward the other end of the factory.

“Booker’s right,” Sam called as Declan gave chase. “This has gone too far.”

Declan ignored his friends.

Matthew picked up a sharp piece of metal sitting on a workstation and held it in front of him like a sword.

Declan stopped. “What are you going to do?” he laughed. “Cut me?”

“O-only if y-you don’t go away,” he stuttered through tears, his eyes rapidly blinking as he spoke. “If you don’t leave me alone.”

Matthew shuffled backward through a set of large double doors and outside. Matthew shuffled backward through a set of large double doors, leading outside. Declan followed with his friends behind him.

They entered a courtyard with barbed wire fences on three sides. The only thing in the cement lot was a building with a wet plywood platform in front of a steel door. Holding the sharp piece of metal between himself and Declan, Matthew moved toward the door, his feet squishing with each step on the rain-soaked wood. When he turned the doorknob, it came off in his hand.

Declan laughed as Matthew was unable to push the door open.

As Declan walked onto the mushy sheet of plywood, Matthew rapidly blinked his eyes and yelped.

“I’m going to beat those stupid tics right out of you.” Declan stepped into reach, and Matthew gripped the metal tighter.

“Declan, stop it!” yelled Booker. Cricket and Sam stepped onto the platform behind Declan, also pleading with him to stop.

Cricket pulled out her phone. “Matthew, what’s your mom's number?”

“Don’t you dare,” Declan said, unsuccessfully trying to grab the phone. “Cut it out,” Sam insisted.

Something shifted below his feet, and Matthew glanced at the plywood, which was bending under their weight.

Nabie and Garby appeared behind Booker. “Matthew,” Garby said, “you feel that, right? You need to get off.” But he couldn’t; Declan and the others blocked his way.

“Guys,” Matthew said, “you need to move.”

No one listened to him.

“Give me the phone,” Declan demanded as he grabbed the device. Sam held Cricket’s hand over the phone, and the girls tried to pull it away from Declan, but his grip was too strong.

“Enough of this,” Booker said, stepping onto the platform.

“Booker, don’t,” Matthew said, with his back against the door.

It was too late.

They all felt their feet sink through the plywood board. But so what? There was surely concrete underneath, right? But as the plywood fibers gave way and the wet board broke apart, their feet did not rest on solid ground.

They fell through a dark empty crevice into the unknown.
