This week at
it's Brenda's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying, "Make It Move!" which means she wants to see those projects that have moving elements....so think shakers, pieces that slide, wobble, rock or even....
....spin! Yeppers, I made a spinner card, a Z fold spinner card, something that I've wanted to make for quite some time.
Question for all my fellow crafters.....Have you ever had a project go so wrong that you just had to sit there for a minute or two and silently contemplate the entire meaning of life? Like, you're seriously going back over your entire existence to figure out what happened in your past to try and piece together how the card you attempted to make could go so badly? Welp, that was me with this card. My first go is still on my desk, in a very prominent position, just in case I ever decide to dip my toes into the Land of Narcissism. Coz it'll snap me back right fast. I did everything wrong that I could possibly do wrong measuring, die cutting and more, including completely taping the front of the card to itself (so the card had only one fold instead of two, if that helps you picture it). The only thing I managed to save from the first attempt was the embossed Santa beard (from The Cat's Pajamas). And, sure, I managed to save it, but then realized that when you attempt to make a spinner with a stamp like this, the two images don't line up when placed back to back.
The second go obviously went better. Buuuuuuut, I will admit, I've been creative with the photo to hide some of the flaws. And I don't know WHY I didn't realize this.....I mean it's so punch-in-the-face obvious now....but a spinner card only spins once by itself. Then you gotta wind it up again. So, if you're planning on giving the card without an envelope, you have to make sure the card stays closed in order for the spinning to happen. And, as you can see by the photo, this card does not stay shut. That means I'm gonna have to set something on it in order for it to stay....OMFG. I just realized. If I had put that wooden embellishment over about an inch or so (where it might not look as good aesthetically) I could have used it as a closure to keep the card closed. GAK! Why didn't I think of that?!?!
Excuse me, I'm going back to my craft desk to again sit silently for a minute or two and contemplate my future as a cardmaker.
Would love to see you join us this week. And, if you'd like more inspiration, from some lovely women who aren't having crises of conscience, be sure to check out what the Girlfriends have made.

Ha! I will answer you question about what I do when a card goes horribly wrong...save it if I can, (i.e. cover up ink drops with enamel dots) or rip it into pieces if I can't (great stress reliver!) and throw it in the recycle bin. I think these movement cards can be very tricky. I've never done a spinner card before, and given what you've said, probably never will. But, hey, only in trying do we ever learn anything new! I think your card looks great. I wouldn't worry about the spinning aspect of it, call it a 'dangle' card instead and have done with it. The image, paper and mood are all beautifully festive!

I have made exactly 1 spinner card like this one...and to be honest after my experience last week with a penny spinner, I will probably never make another one of those either. We must stay strong and play to our strengths (which in my case is also not doing videos). I loved your post but I love your card even more. Itʻs a real beauty!
ReplyDeleteJan: Kudos to you for trying something new!!! Bravo!! And thanks for sharing your 2nd try with us at THICC! --Becca/DT
ReplyDeleteGreat fold card and I can completely relate to your commentary. Thanks so very much for joining us this time at the Creative Fingers Challenge, Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteOMG, Jan you totally just described my most recent card sessions. LOL. And just when I had a card actually going the way I wanted to (this was the day after having an awful cardmaking day), I had this all written on the inside too, I turned it over to stamp the "hand stamped" on the back. Turned back around and to my horror there was all yellow ink smeared on Santa's coat's fur!!! I had forgotten the stickles glitter was still a little wet. Thankfully hubby advised me to use a white paint marker to cover that up and it worked, but guess what after I did that I added stickles again which sort of melted the paint marker and out came the yellow ink again (which came from the scrap paper I had used under the project and had all shades of distress inks on it.). Luckily I was able to carefully wipe the now yellow stickles away and added the paint marker again, this time I sprinkled loose glitter on the fur. All this happened after I had a very frustrating day of card making the day before. So definitely have had days like you are describing. I haven't been back in the craft room since... wish me luck!!
ReplyDeleteAll that said, your card turned out to be totally fabulous and I am sure will be so fun to receive!
Thank you so much for joining in at my Crafty Wednesday challenge!

You get points for making a spinner card, because I also have never made one. I appreciate your honesty and while I don't know if I completely have rethought everyone of life's vicissitudes ..every project generally ends with " some type of "cover-up." I actually sent an upside down wedding card (put the front on back) It was too someone who I thought would appreciate it anyway~
ReplyDeleteHaha - we all have days like that, Jan but I'm so glad you persisted to make this gorgeous spinner card. Recipients never realise what a hard time we have with our creations or they would all be framed on walls lol!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with us at ABC Christmas Challenges.
`I'm glad you persisted..the result is terrific! Most of all, thanks for bringing a smile to my face with your descriptive talents!
ReplyDeleteOh dear! When my cards go wrong, I take great delight in ripping them to shreds for the recycling bin which, I must sadly admit, hold too many shredded failures. We've all been there!
ReplyDeleteI say Attempt #2 looks fabulous! The embossed Santa beard is so fun! And your awesome photography skills have me believing that your card is flawless. I'm pretty sure it is (or at least incredibly close). :)
It's a great spinner card and well worth the continued effort.
