Skywatch Friday: Falls, Rivers, Valleys and Critters

Finally!  Blogger had some issues uploading photos today, but it seems to finally be resolved so I can make my Skywatch Friday post.

Today I made another trip into Yellowstone.

My first stop was the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and my favorite viewpoint -- Artist's Point.  It was a very overcast and foggy morning which kind of gives it a mystical look.

This is the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River.  It looks so perfect that it almost looks fake.  Know what I mean?

If you've ever wondered how Yellowstone got its name, it is literally from the yellow walls of this canyon.

After leaving the Lower Falls I went upriver to view the Upper Falls.  Not as big as the other falls, but still very impressive.

Then I crossed to the other side of the river and visited the Brink of the Upper Falls.

The roaring of the water as it goes over the edge is amazing.

I had front row parking at every attraction I visited.  With the upcoming holiday weekend, the park will be packed from now until the end of September and parking will be difficult to find.

I ventured further upriver to where the Yellowstone is serene and tranquil.  I can imagine explorers canoeing down this river and then they hear the roar of the falls ahead.  Hopefully they get out in time.

My next stop was Hayden Valley.  I pulled over to take a shot of the valley and then I saw movement about 200 yards out.  With my "good" camera I was able to see it was a wolf.

Yep, it's that little dark blip out there.  I really need a super telephoto lens.

I may not have gotten a good shot, but it was a real treat to see this guy.

Further down the road I saw a few elk.  Better watch out guys--that wolf is looking for breakfast.

My last stop of the morning was LeHardy Rapids.  I was hoping to see some spawning cutthroat trout, but I think it's too late in the season.  Still beautiful though.

Thanks to everyone who left me such kind comments after last week's Skywatch post.  When you live and work in Yellowstone it's easy to have great Skywatch photos.  Have a good week!

Thought the picture of the lower falls was one of your paintings they look identical. And did everyone notice the KC Chiefs sticker on the back of the truck? :)

I visited Yellowstone with my grandparents when I was about seven years old (over sixty-five years ago) and those first three shots bring back a load of memories. Of course, all the ones we got were black and white, but I have one of my Grandad and me each standing with one leg up on that rock in the first photo. Nice job. (Sorry for messing up my first try.)

I love your photos of the lower falls. The first one is framed so nicely. Yes, seeing a wolf is a spectacular treat. I wonder how large of a lense you would need to get good wildlife shots? The problem is they are so expensive, not to mention big and heavy to carry around. But perhaps worth it to get some wolf shots!
