She Doesn't Have A Clue by Jenny Elder Moke Book Review

About the Book:

A high-end wedding on a private island off the coast of Seattle sounds like something out of a magazine. But for bestselling mystery author Kate Valentine, it’s more like a nightmare.

Why Kate agreed to attend her ex-fiancé’s wedding is its own enigma, but she’ll plaster on a fake smile for two nights, with the aid of free champagne, naturally. And because the groom happens to be her editor, she’ll try to finish a draft of her latest Loretta Starling mystery as a wedding gift.

When the bride is poisoned and Kate stumbles across a dead body, she finds herself in a real-life mystery that eerily echoes the plot of her latest novel. And the only person who seems willing to help Kate catch the killer is Jake Hawkins, aka: the Hostralian; aka: Kate’s biggest romantic regret.

As the wine flows and the weather threatens to hold every guest hostage, bitter resentments and long-held grudges surface amongst the colorful crowd. Anyone could be capable of murder, it seems. What would Loretta do? Unfortunately, Kate doesn’t have a clue.

My Review:

This is a book about relationships as much as a murder mystery. I think the murder is just a frame upon which to hang a novel about romance. Kate is an interesting heroine. She is a flawed woman with relationship problems. She writes successful mysteries with a female lead and often wants to be that fictional character herself. The mystery is of the locked room style as Kate and the others are on an island during an intense storm. There is some humor as a bumbling Kate tries to solve the murder. It is a complex investigation involving publishing, advances, authors, and lots of family money. The suspects and possible motives are many. There are plenty of red herrings and twists.

The one aspect of the novel I did not like at all were the two graphic sex scenes. I felt they were unnecessary. There was enough sexual tension and humor already.

Moke's writing style is entertaining and good for a debut adult novel. She doesn't have a clue. Does that refer to her solving the murder or her trouble with developing long lasting relationships? Read the book to find out.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

Making Time by Maria Bowler Book Review

About the Book:

We are constantly fed the line that the way to greater satisfaction and meaning in life is being more productive with our time. But what if all the gold stars and checkboxes are actually distracting us from the very thing we are chasing? What would life look like if we acted from our being instead of merely doing?

If you long for a life full of meaning, creativity, and joy--a life where you don't feel pressured, rushed, or lacking in some way--Making Time is for you. This book isn't about life hacks to control your schedule in order to cram in more work. It's about liberating yourself from the myth that humans are producers and discovering the freedom of being a maker who trusts life as a creative process. In this bold, revitalizing call back to human being, you'll learn how to

· let go of the constant pressure to do more
· find deep meaning in how you spend your time and energy
· resist external noise and reconnect with your inner creative spark
· find creative fulfillment as you make what you truly desire

You don't need to do more or try harder. It just takes a new, transformative vision for how to live from your values every day.

My Review:

This is a book with content to think about. Bowler encourages us to re-establish a relationship with our natural creative self. She wants us to be aware of our inner knowing, live in harmony with our soul, who we are. This is a good book for those tired of the emptiness of productivity. It is a book for those who want to feel alive again, who want to feel like they are living their true self. The chapters are short. They can be read one a day as a jumping off point for reflective thinking. This is a personal book as Bowler shares many of her own experiences and reflections. It's a good book to think about who you are being. It will help you unlearn productivity as a way of life and rather be who you are on the inside.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Book

Book: Charlotte McMaster and the Messenger Angel

Charlotte McMaster is in trouble. Some innocent memes shared to the whole school have resulted in community service at a rehabilitation center for the elderly. Charlotte is drawn to the elderly woman and soon finds herself bringing her best friend, Ellie, on her visits as well. My Review

This is a delightful book for young readers. There is a tween finding her way in becoming a sensitive and helpful person. There is a delightful older woman, so giving, so wise, and a good mentor. There are relationships healed. There is a very good faith message and an interesting exploration of how God might talk to us.

I like how Charlotte learned valuable lessons about relationships and developed a trust in God. She found out that being obedient, even when you don't want to do the task, can turn out really good. She also learned how to relate to her parents.

Overton explores some serious issues in this novel, like bullying, adoption and parents arguing, doing so in a sensitive way. Her writing style is great for young readers. The novel is definitely one that makes you feel good in the end.

My rating: 5/5 stars.

She and her husband live in the southern tip of Texas where they enjoy semi-tropical weather and spending time with their friends and family.

More from Terry

My daughter is an amazing person. After having three children, she and her husband felt God calling them to do more for children without parents. They fostered eleven children. But one year, they were asked to foster a newborn infant whose mother was no longer able to care for any of her children due to drug addiction. It was not that the child was rejected by his mother but that she could not care for him. My daughter brought him home from the hospital at the age of three days while he was having withdrawal symptoms from meth. After a few months, they decided to adopt the child. The process took a while because, for a short time, the child was allowed to return to his birth mother. He now lives with my daughter’s family, and he is an absolute delight and a great addition to the household. Charlotte McMaster and The Messenger Angel is dedicated to my daughter. It is a middle-grade reader about a middle school girl who, while wrestling with the question of being adopted and being rejected by her birth mother, meets a fascinating elderly lady. The vision of an angel provides help and guidance as this young girl comes to realize her adoptive parents were selected for her by God. This story conveys themes of healing, hope, and spiritual discovery. Through the character of Charlotte McMaster, the novel explores how a young girl, navigating the challenges of family tension and personal identity, seeks guidance from earthly and Heavenly sources. The elderly Mrs. Abigail Hooper tells Charlotte about her own experience with an angel. This introduces Charlotte to the idea of divine presence, sparking her curiosity about her past and adoption.

Up Shiatsu Creek by Sarah Hualde Book Review

About the Novella:

Corky has kept her special ability under wraps. She can hear people's deepest secrets, a power that’s more of a burden than a blessing. But when her former teacher and mentor is accused of murder, Corky can no longer stay in the shadows. She’s ready to use her gift to uncover the truth—if she can avoid being the killer’s next victim.

Corky teams up with Stella and her dashing brother, Chef Steve, to unravel the mystery. As they dig through clues and confront dark secrets, Corky faces her biggest challenge yet: balancing her gift against the dangers that lurk around every corner.

Join Corky, Stella, and Steve as they untangle a web of deceit, confront a cunning killer, and race against time. If you love gripping mysteries with a touch of intrigue and suspense, this is one adventure you won't want to miss.

My Review:

This is a fun mystery novella. Corky is crafted well. She has a special gift that gives her insight in to the thoughts of others but has learned how to use that gift well. Her sidekick, Stella, is a fun quirky character. They team up with Stella's brother Steve to get into some fun adventures. The grumpy policeman Trent is a good foil for Corky's investigative efforts.

This is the third in a series. While there are some references to previous mysteries, I felt this novella reads quite well on its own. Hualde's writing style is not complicated so it is a quick and easy mystery to read. There is an underlying belief in God and a hint of some romance. It is a fun read.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Author:

Sarah lives in California, in a home that brings her happiness and hay fever. She loves God, loves her family, and loves freshly brewed coffee. She has a husband who cooks, a son who stop animates, a daughter who loves animals, a dog that follows her everywhere, and a turtle who scowls at her condescendingly.

Trekking Toward Tenacity by Chris Morris Blog Tour Book Review

About the Book

Book: Trekking Toward Tenacity: Your Family’s Roadmap to Stronger Mental Health

Author: Chris Morris

Genre: Parenting / Christian Living / Mental Health

Release date: September 24, 2024

Empower your children with the gift of tenacity through these practical, meaningful tools for their mental and spiritual health.

Trekking toward Tenacity walks through Psalm 139 verse by verse, discovering how we can help our children develop mentally healthy habits. The goal is to coach our kids to be more tenacious because we live in a tumultuous world. It can be hard to stay focused on God and on mentally healthy habits in that tumult, but this book gives concrete ways to help kids to do just that.

By teaching parents practical application steps to implement with kids of all ages, ranging from preschool to adolescent, this book will give them new tools to support their families in the quest for better mental health. It will provide rock-solid encouragement for parents who are stressed out and wondering if they’re making the right choices for their families. It provides counterintelligence against the onslaught of increased risks of mental health challenges for children and young adults today.

My Review

Morris has struggled from depression and writes from his experiences. He shares his own thoughts on mental illness. He has a strong concern for children. “Depression and anxiety are at epidemic levels in adolescents,” he writes. (1235/2385) The strength of this book is Morris' ideas on how to talk with kids about mental issues. He provides age related activities and discussion suggestions that are valuable.

Morris is not a theologian but his book does contain what I consider some troubling theological statements. He says God does not know the future and does not know how people will act. (1719-1748/2385) This theological position is known as open theology and is problematic in my view. It calls into question the whole idea of prophecy.

This book has a limited audience. It will best be appreciated by parents who want to help their children think about and perhaps deal with mental issues like depression. Just be aware that Morris does not adhere to the difficult concept that God is sovereign yet man has free will.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Author

Chris Morris is a certified mental health coach dedicated to promoting understanding of mental health issues within the church. Because of a lifelong struggle with depression and suicidality, Chris became committed to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging others to seek after holistic health.

As a writer and speaker, Chris has shared his personal story and insights with audiences across the country, inspiring many individuals to take control of their own health, break free from poor theological teaching placed upon them, and seek the support they need. He has published several books on mental health, the most recent being Resilient and Redeemed. His work has been featured in a number of media outlets, including CrossWalk, The Mighty, and Fathom Magazine.

Chris is deeply committed to creating a more compassionate and supportive world and church for individuals living with mental health issues. Through his writing and speaking, he is a powerful voice for change and a beacon of hope for those in need.

More from Chris

I literally wrote the book that I wish I had 20 years ago when I was raising my kids. Being a parent today is tumultuous. Especially in a post-COVID world, mental health is a strong contender for the biggest challenges facing our kids. There are plenty of books out there that give us theories on how to raise our kids, and plenty of books that are full of devotionals to walk through with our kids, but shockingly few books dedicated to coaching our kids to have tenacity.

In my experience, tenacity might be the biggest difference maker between seeing our kids move successfully through life and floundering. It’s a given that challenges will come, whether those struggles look like not making the varsity basketball team or something more serious. We simply have to help our kids know how to walk through the missed opportunities and hard times that will inevitably come into their lives.

Trekking Toward Tenacity does just that. We walk through Psalm 139 verse by verse and pull out practical, meaningful tips, tricks, and conversations to have with our kids to help them develop resilience. News flash: there’s no magic potion we can give our kids that gives them bounce-backability. Instead, this is found through conversation about life and God.

My favorite part of this book was writing the age-appropriate activities in the center of each chapter. Instead of only giving you theology or child psychology data without any practical application, Trekking Toward Tenacity includes specific activities you can try out with your kids. There’s obviously no guarantee that these ideas will work, but I can tell you that they worked for other kids. These are pie-in-the-sky concepts, but activities that have been tried in the real world.

If you’re looking for a book that will arm you with skills to coach your kids on how to develop tenacity in their lives, this is the book for you!

Serial Burn by Lynette Eason Book Review

About the Book:

Now the fire marshal of Lake City, Jesslyn McCormick is determined to find the person who started the fire that robbed her of her family when she was just seven years old. As the twentieth anniversary of the tragedy approaches, a string of fires--including at Jesslyn's church--brings up all those old feelings and offers new evidence.

Because church fires are considered a hate crime, FBI Special Agent Nathan Carlisle is called in to work with local law enforcement. Nathan has his own past--one he'd prefer not to revisit. And focusing on helping Jesslyn track down the arsonist is a great distraction.

As both the case and the chemistry between Jesslyn and Nathan heat up, memories will come flooding in from the past to bump up against hopes for the future. And when Jesslyn comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare, she'll have to confront her fears and rely on Nathan and her community of friends in order to survive.

My Review:

I liked this inspirational romantic suspense. I liked that Nathan and Jessyln have the potential for romance but do their necessary work first. It was interesting that both characters had tragedy caused by fire in their history. Nathan had to face his past and develop, with the help of counseling, his own well being. It was a bit odd that Nathan's brother, a psychiatrist, had not come to the same place of well being. The character development of the heroes was done well and the plot kept the story moving along. The climax is suspenseful and required exact arrangement of timing by the villain. Jessyln wondered how it could have worked out and so did I. I am not sure the character development and revelation of the villain was entirely consistent.

Eason covers a number of issues in the novel. Healing from past mistakes is a big one. Along with that is the necessity of forgiveness for past actions, including a strong faith message. The plot includes marital infidelity and allusions to child mistreatment in foster care.

This is a good inspirational romantic suspense and continuation of the Lake City Heroes series. Each novel in the series focuses on a different character so each can be read alone. You can read my reviews of the earlier books in the series: Double Take and Target Acquired.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

Cassidy is a talented musician trapped under the weight of her mother’s ambitious dreams for her. Desperate to carve out her own identity, she struggles to find her voice amidst the noise of others’ expectations.

Wrapped Up in You is a heartwarming tale about breaking free from the expectations of others, finding love, and discovering that the best path is the one you create for yourself.

My Review

This is an engaging romance that begins by exploring relationships made over social media. With alternating points of view, we experience the thoughts and feelings of both Nash and Cassidy. The tenuous connection between the two breaks when the social media site disappears. The two do surprisingly connect later on but there are many obstacles to a possible romance as the two pursue careers.

This is a good romance with only one troubling aspect. At one point, the two share an apartment. We are not told the details, such as if it is two bedroom, and I found it a little disconcerting. Other than that, it is a fine romance. Carr's writing style is good and the novel is an entertaining one.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Author

I’m Jennifer Carr. I’m a wife, homeschooling mom, baker, part-time farmer, social media addict, and an avid reader. I’m a lover of coffee, music, learning, animals, and writing.

I have a degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Marriage & Family Counseling, and certifications in Life Coaching, Health and Wellness Coaching, and am a certified Brain Health Professional. I also taught high school AP Psychology for several years.

I’ve always loved writing. Complete transparency alert – I never set out to become an author. I know, that probably sounds unlikely considering, but it’s true. I sat down one day and decided I wanted to write a story because I needed to know how a dream I’d awoken from ended. It snowballed and turned into chapters and eventually into an entire book. When I finished that book, I needed to make sure my characters were OK and thriving so I wrote the second book.

It was at that point I realized that being an author was something I could see myself doing for a really long time. So, I’m still writing and loving every minute of it. When I’m not writing, there’s a good chance I’m reading and drinking coffee!

More from Jennifer

Wrapped Up in You is book two of the Real American Country Series. But don’t worry, it can definitely be read as a standalone! The series follows a reality television country music competition and some of the contestants as they pursue their dreams of becoming country music recording artists. This book follows the story of Nash Montgomery and Cassidy Raye Stanton as they each navigate the pressures of the spotlight. They’ll each have to decide if they’re chasing their own dreams—or someone else’s. And along the way, they’ll discover that getting wrapped up in the right person can bring out the best in themselves.

Wrapped Up in You is a heartwarming tale about breaking free from the expectations of others, finding love, and discovering that the best path is the one you create for yourself.

One of my favorite things about writing this series is coming up with custom playlists for each book. If you love country music or just want to see what all the fuss is about, here’s the playlist that goes along with Wrapped Up in You: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2hXjkRFytj9tPFpitHRdEf?si=d0209225ac1f41e0

My Review

The saga of this complex family continues. This is a novel for young readers who like horses and everything about them. There is much to learn about caring for horses, such as how to check over the animal before and after every ride. There is also information about laminitis. I didn't know there were horse chiropractors. There are also fun adventures, such as an ATV adventure and going on rides at the local fair and seeing exotic animals.

The authors also explore many relationship issues including divorce and remarriage, adoption, abuse, blended families, and more. There are also lessons to learn, like facing disappointments and forgiving others. Most of the novel records daily events for the family members.

Young readers who are ready to delve into complex relationship issues will enjoy this book, especially if they love horses.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

You can read my review of the previous novel in this series: All Together West.

More from Monique

Hello Everyone,

Change Rushes West has been a long-time coming for me. It explores Ginnie’s relationship with her mom’s horse, Eternal Love. Ginnie’s mom’s tragic accident really shaped the entire series. From the beginning, I knew that losing the horse was a sore spot for Ginnie. I always wondered what happened to Eternal Love after she was sold—it felt like an unresolved part of Ginnie’s story.

The idea of bringing them back together has been in the back of my mind for years, but I didn’t seriously explore it until one night G.L. and I brainstormed ways to tie up some loose ends in the series as well as figure out what story arcs to add to this book.

That brainstorming session was pivotal. We started imagining what Ginnie’s journey to find Eternal Love would look like and realized it could be so much more than just a search for a lost horse. It could be a way for Ginnie to reconnect with her mother, heal from that loss, and explore how life moves forward—even when it feels like it’s standing still.

I also loved the idea of Calliope, Ginnie’s horse, being Eternal Love’s daughter. It felt like a beautiful connection between Ginnie’s past and present, between the mother she lost and the person she’s becoming. It added another layer of emotional depth to the story. I wanted Ginnie’s journey to feel like a true adventure, but also an internal one, where she learns that not all endings are sad—sometimes they’re just the beginning of something new.

Writing Change Rushes West was a way to bring Ginnie full circle, and I think readers will enjoy the mystery and the twists along the way. There’s family drama, of course, and the West family is as dynamic as ever.

However, at its heart, this story is not only about Eternal Love, the horse her mother was seldom apart from, but about the emotional love—both the kind you lose… and the kind you find, when you least expect it.
