Mom and I are passionate bird watchers! Dad rolls me outside (I’m not fat, just fluffy😻), so we can play “Identify that Bird”!

We use the Merlin Bird ID app to verify our guesses. I always beat Mom!

Here’s a list of the birds we heard in less than 10 minutes.

It’s so relaxing that I often end up dozing off! 😹

Dear Friends Who’s ready for “Fun Facts with Rocky”?

We’re not traveling to Colorado this year to witness the hummingbirds’ spring migration, so we’re eagerly awaiting their arrival in north Georgia. 

They typically show up during the first week of April. 

Here are some interesting facts about hummingbirds.

There are over 350 known hummingbird species. We primarily see ruby- throated hummers in Georgia. 

Hummers are diurnal, meaning most are awake during the day and sleep at night. 

A hummingbird’s brain comprises approximately 4.2% of its body weight, which is the highest percentage among all wild birds.

Despite their name, they don’t actually “hum.” Instead, it’s more like a “chatter,” and certain species produce sounds by using their feathers. 

Hummers beat their wings thousands of times per minute. 

They consume about half their body weight in bugs and nectar, feeding every 10-15 minutes and visiting 1,000-2,000 flowers throughout the day. In addition to nectar from flowers and feeders, hummers eat small insects, beetles, ants, aphids, gnats, mosquitoes, and wasp.

Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, just like Auntie HiC! ❤️

They prefer natural nectar to feeders, but if you provide feeders, please remember not to add red dye and clean them frequently.

Donated to Raleigh by the Wooten Family

Year 1996 | Acres 20.5

Toss a Frisbee, picnic in the lawn, watch the wildlife, and enjoy the day in the park. This 21-acre site was donated by the Wooten family in 1996 for the use of the citizens of Raleigh as a park and future greenway connection. The first phase of the 2015 Wooten Meadow Master Plan was completed in early 2022.

Set along Hare Snipe Creek*, Wooten Meadow Park has looping paved and grassy pathways, open lawn areas, natural meadows, and wetlands and is a habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. Further back in the park is a successional forest of **loblolly pines and hardwood trees.

The trail begins at the corner where you see stoplights

Several fun and symmetrical bridges just to the left of this one

is one of many small creeks.  I heard croaking frogs here never saw any

New  informational signs have been added

There are at least 8 Eastern Bluebird houses like this

I was quite happy to see a lucky Ducky Mallard in residence.

Ducky is a good Diver.  I enjoyed the show.

After his diving show, he swam away look at his gorgeous green head.

The day before I visited we had 2 1/2" of rain.  I was happy to see many

little winding water areas like this.
