A pencil drawing of a #scarecrow inspires today’s #RocktoberMusicFest song “Rain on the Scarecrow” by #JohnMellencamp & Oct. 1st #BoTB results

Posted on October 8, 2020

Thursdays are reserved for my art date with Rain’s Garden. This week’s prompt is ‘Scarecrows’.  I lack a sinister purrsonally to truly do creepy artwork justice but I take a stab at it anyhow just to see if I’m lucky to pull it off. 😉

This month I’m playing along in the annual mewsic fest hosted by my good friend, Mary. I’m challenging myself to make new mewsic discoveries to share with you, often times unknown artists and song titles or familiar artists singing unfamiliar songs and while I’m dusting away the cobwebs in my memory, I might find a forgotten track worth replaying. I remember listening to John Mellencamp in the early 80s. It’s his bigger hits that I play in my head. I’m not sure how he fell off my radar but I suspect it has to do with early retirement to be a full-time stay at home mom which meant no more radio time, thus, no new songs to get buried in my brain.  However, I’m really baffled why I don’t remember today’s 1985 Mellencamp song. Do you recall, Rain on the Scarecrow? Yes? No? Which ever way you answer, hit play to enjoy!

In last week’s Ghost(s) In The Wind BoTB, I put two different songs with similar titles in my showdown and ask y’all to pick your favorite.   This is how the votes went…Birdy 5 and Richard Thompson 5.

Okay, since there’s no clear winner in this battle. I will leave you with Halloween themed songs (or close as I can come) by each contender.  Birdy with “Not About Angels” and Richard covering  Donovan’s “Season of the Witch”.

My next BoTB is set for Thursday, October 15th. Please join for the showdown fun.

Let me wind things down with my Thankful Thursday list.

  1. Last Friday when we thought we were picking up our car, it turned out that we didn’t.  I have a special thank you, though. We had to go to the body shop to pay them because they are closed on Saturdays and we thought we’d get our car from Toy-yoyo (doing 4-wheel alignment caused by the accident and some warranty related stuff). Anywho, we drove to the dealership looked the car over, then went to the body shop to settle up our portion. Afterwards we drove to Seymour to check out some land up for sale. On our way, a truck passed us on Chapman Highway. We were on the inside lane and just as he got up to the driver’s side, his front right wheel fell off and rolling toward us. DH immediately glanced in the rear view mirror, hit the brakes, and then veered off to the emergency lane.  The truck went right past us, crossing in front of us and coming to a rest nearly in the ditch. The rental was spared and we were safe, except for two speeding heart beats.  God had His hands on  us!
  2. I’m thankful that an opportunity presented itself for us to spend a little time with our son after we got every thing down Friday. He met us at a shopping center on Chapman Highway on his way home from work. He lives in south Knoxville.  We just hung around talking for 2-hours. It was breezy but a beautiful day!
  3. For some reason the trucking company declined having the 4-wheel alignment on our car. The truck hit the driver’s passanger door and the wheel well crushing it. Naturally such an impact is going to throw off your alignment. Thankfully, Toy-yoyo made us a good offer on because we needed them to do some other work. Airport Toyota service department has always done us right and DH loves our mechanic.  He’s an old school, common sense fella who knows what he’s doing and doesn’t have to rely solely on what a computer tells him. Those kind of mechanics are fading away. I don’t know what we’ll do when this fella retires.
  4. I very thankful we finally got our Avalon back Tuesday afternoon. The body work and new windshield makes the car look brand new to my eye. 🙂
  5. I’m thankful for a wonderful DH who got me these beautiful fall mums! Doesn’t this scene scream, “AUTUMN”?

Even in a pandemic you can get your local grocery store to deliver special treats to your door. 🙂

That’s a wrap for now. Tomorrow is DH’s off-Friday, but not to worry CAAC is open 24/7 and you find a few Friday Sillies and a RMF song post waiting for you first thing tomorrow. Keep rockin’ on ghouls & guys!  X💋X💋, Cathy

    CAThy! It’s That You?

I apologize for being so late to your BOTB Results post, but I have been crazy-busy recently and am trying to play “catch-up” on literally… EVERYTHING!!

A BOTB tie? That may not be the most satisfying of outcomes (at least they never were for me), but it’s certainly a proof-positive sign of an extremely well-matched Battle! You are good at this little thing!! :o)

I hope you and yourn are well, and I will be back again to drop my two and a half cents into your next BOTB kitty!

      Stephen,

Don’t worry about it! I’ve come to accept this kind of results after others like yourself saying that’s the ultimate way for a battle to end. It doesn’t bother me now like it did. Thanks for the visit and I’ll see you tomorrow in my latest BoTB, my friend!

A quick comment on last weeks post. Your ghoulish girly says once again that you know how to draw “sinister”. That doesn’t mean that your are sinister in any way. It just shows how versatile you are in your art. Again, the music videos are great. I don’t think I remember Birdy, but certainly do enjoy her music. I will have to look into finding out more and listening to her music. Nice post, Cathy 🙂

Your drawing is creepy enough. I think it’s in the way you drew his smile – wicked looking, I think.

I’m glad to hear you’re fine after that almost car crash. Who knows what could have happened?

Thank you for stopping by my blog. I hope you have a lovely autumn.

      Lissa,

Yes, it’s the wicked grin on my scarecrow’s face that makes him creepy. The shifting eyes helps, too. That near-accident could’ve gone bad in a heart beat. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Thanks for dropping in for a visit, my dear!

Your scarecrow face certainly would pass as sinister and your pumpkin is pretty wicked too so you must have surprised yourself 🙂 I haven’t thought of John Mellencamp for years … like you, except when I am driving in my car, I don’t get much chance to listen to music. That makes the music you posted even more of a treat than you know and the video in the Birdy, Not About Angels was wonderful. This was enjoyable scarecrow and all …

I like your friendly scarecrow. You wrote “I lack a sinister purrsonally”. Seems like me. There is a lot of dark spots in me but I can only see light. I can´t do creepy stuff either and hate all grotesk and bloody stuff. For your comment about wolves howls, I feel it as loneliness and for villagers to keep sheep safe. But there are no fear.

      Monica,

A wolf howling does have a loneliness and most certainly farmers need to keep their livestock safe from such predators but with Halloween just around the corner, I link wolves with Werewolves and spooky fun. Thanks for joining me, my dear!

Oh Cathy, I love, love, love this scarecrow. He reminds me of Freddy Kruger. Apparently he scares me a whole lot more than he scares the birds. The rest of the drawing is incredible, too.. I love the pumpkin and the hay bales. I’ve never heard of that monthly music challenge, but I enjoyed the song.

You were lucky with that close call and the truck. Loved the mums your husband got you. He sounds like a sweetie.

I’m glad you enjoyed the mewsic and art. Yep, that wheel coming off was scary. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest but I recovered quickly. I’m extremely thankful we were spared and I’m thankful that the fella driving wasn’t hurt. I couldn’t see any damage other than the wheel coming off but I know he had to have more. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Art Date with Rain & Rocktoberfest & Thankful Thursday, dear friend!

When I was young, I often spotted scarecrows on farm land. Lately I rarely see them. The one in your sketch is literally “outstanding in his field” 🙂 – very well drawn – as is the rest of the scene including the menacing jack-o-lantern. I love it! If you ever get time you should bring your drawing back In Living Color.

I never heard that song nor saw that video by heartland rocker John Mellencamp. I enjoyed it as I enjoy all of his story songs. In fact, a Mellencamp song is coming up in my very next post at Shady’s Place this Sunday. I’m surprised your BOTB wasn’t a blowout victory for Richard Thompson. That seemed to be the way it was shaping up on day one. However a tie score is the very best outcome for you, the BOTB host blogger, and I congratulate you on picking equally matched contestants. I love Donovan’s “Season Of The Witch,” and Richard did a great job on his cover. If this were another band battle, I’d pick Richard over Birdy yet again.

Holy smoke! That was a close call on the highway, Cathy!. I can feel your hearts pounding after that close call. DH must be a skilled heads-up driver to have taken such quick action to avoid a crash. I’m happy to know you got your car back and it seems like new again. DH is a wonderful hubby for giving you those colorful fall mums. They go nicely with that bright orange pumpkin. The colors match.

I’ll try to make it over for your Friday Sillies this week. Until then have a delightful day, dear friend Cathy!

      Tom,

I will eventually get around to colorizing my Halloween series of illustrations but it won’t be this month. Beginning this Friday, I will be officially on vacation. DH is taking a couple of weeks off. We aren’t going anywhere, but we’ll enjoy our time spent doing at home, local, or maybe even a day trip to the mountains. What ever we do, as long as we’re together then that’s good with me.

My battle surprised me. I had Richard ready to go as the winner when I got a last minute vote ending the showdown in a tie. DH is an exceptional driver. He’s quite level headed with fast responses. I don’t know if I would’ve handled that incident as well as he did and I’m glad I wasn’t put in that spot. God’s hand was on us, as well as the driver. He could’ve been hurt but wasn’t.

I’m playing catch up this morning. I appreciated your visit, dear friend. I’ll hop over in a sec to see what’s going on at your place!
