Monitor lizard in the water: camera critters #16

If you have visited Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, you may see this giant lizard.

Last year, I saw a big monitor lizard on the footbridge from the car park to the Visitors’ Centre, it was still there watching people walk passes him, took photos of him, he was basking under the sun, did his day dreaming…

Last weekend I went to Sungei Buloh again, I saw a  monitor lizard, but this time, it was swimming in the water, for a while, I though it is a crocodile…  At first, it only came out the head…      …swim slowly A giant monitor lizard, at least 1.2 m long… The skin of the two monitor lizards look a lot of different, the one on the land has shinning yellow gold color  skin, (the fist photo, click to enlarge), but this one in the water, it looks grey and very dark blue. I am curious if this is the same one as on the first photo. And…what is that? on closer examination, i saw something on its right side, like a part of the body, but why it looks like coming out from nowhere?  I was lucky enough to capture this handsome fellow with tongue out…Monitor lizards are can "smell" the air with their tongue to track down prey.
